Don't any of you dare say that Koreans have gotten this far because of a religion. The blood, sweat and tears shed by our ancestors built what we have now from the rubbles. It's good that we have different religions and people have their right to belief, doesn't mean that they have the right to force their beliefs to others and actively terrorize the other religions.

I have been part of a Korean group at UC Berkeley. Couple years back, we held a academic seminar on "dong book gong jung" (China's claming of goguryo's history as theirs) and what we need to do about it. When I was trying to publicize this event, most of the Korean Americans didn't even know what goguryo was. Did they know where Ephesus was? Oh yes sir, and they gave me scriptures for me to dwell on from Ephesians. Well how useless! Other countires claim our heritage while we denounce our own
well to be honest, i didn't really know that much about the korean history(despite having taken sat morning korean school) until my junior and senior year, when there was a korean show called 느낌표 that came out and was talking about this topic. i heard the names, but never understood it and never really bothered to look it up really. so from my own experience, i feel that the KAs, when they do fight for some korean right, don't do it out of knowledge, but out of the whole spur of the moment thing
having said that, if I were to believe (or rather perform useless rituals and/or be molded into a pre-formed value system) I would continue something that would enhance my understanding of my own heritage.

(if you are adamant about God being the sole God and dismissing the other gods in diff religions, there is nothing to talk about. i always question my textbooks. i know the account of the civil war in north and south of the eastern us is different in their books, and i don't believe all that info they give about war especially. that is what was made public, not the whole truth. and i don't really think koreans should have written the bible. i don't think it should have been a person If it really was God's word. if God really wanted to save humans, why didnt he just write the bible himself in all the languages in the world
I don't think you misunderstood. I'm personally a non-believer, and if KA (Korean-Americans) are going to read some sort of pseudo-history book supposedly written by Paul and others (we do'nt even know who wrote the old testament) then they should rather learn about their own heritage.

Christianity in Korea was introduced in early 1800s. This means that all Koreans including your ancestors went to hell.

i personally have gone to church since the day i was born, and never questioned it until i got into youth group. my dad especially is a very devoted christian, and i had always found it annoying when he would always force me to pray before eating, but i thought that was because i wasnt a good believer, and then i began to hate church itself because of the way it never had anything to do with God but more about socializing. so i guess i'm not a christian in a sense.
i don't believe that the Bible isn't real, but i also believe that the bible isn't purely true because it was written by man. and really, if only believers were given salvation, most of the churches in the world would be nothing but houses of hell. and i have asked that question before, and i never really got a definite answer, except that maybe they were saved because it wasn't their fault they didn't know. if it was like that, then i would rather not know at all too.
Some say history is written by the winners. The same skepticism can be applied to the Bible. While history books has been passed down generations by the winners and thus biased, and the Bible (claimed as historical text by many) is written, translated and modified by Christian believers. Now the objectivity of Bible as truthful recount of Jesus is very questionable. For me, I don't believe in any books that has a cover, even college textbooks. You gotta have some skepticism for everything.
But most disappointing is to see Korean-American kids learning about Jewish history (in form of old testament) every Sunday when they don't even know jack crap about ancient Korean history. They would name all biblical heroes, but no heroes from goguryo, balhae, and dismiss dangun as a mythical being. I'm just sad that the Koreans didn't write that stupid book (otherwise everyone in the world would be studying Korean history on Sunday)
and from historical facts, ancestors and traditions were in some ways more advanced than we are now. and the traditions were made to balance out our lives. so i would rather follow traditions than go on retreats every summer and winter to pray. isn't praying to god all the time a sort of idolizing too? people say there are no idols in christianity, yet they idolize the cross symbol and pray to it all the time. and they say praying to a golden cow is wrong.
i was also told that you should never love your family more than God. but i don't know how that's really possible, when you know nothing about this God. and why should God be the only one with the right to kill off populations and get angry? why does HE teach that, and kill off people just because they were sinful? then are christians allowed to kill off prostitutes and rapists because theyre sinful?
id go to hell, but if God is real, then the rest of my family would be in heaven.
but frankly, i think God should have clarified his existence and the way he wants us to go if he really meant to save us. even if i went to hell without my family, i'd still be with my nonbeliever friends, and i'd meet nonbeliever celebrities i never got to meet in real life. and besides. how did God save the jews and the soldiers and innocent bystanders as they were killed in all the various wars? what is the miracle that God has put upon us? i don't know what it is. he's just false hope to me.
I found this video very moving, but I completely disagree with the content. Our (Korean) tradition for thousand years have been respecting and worshipping our ancestors. Christians see this as "worshipping of an idol." And shun us from performing our rituals that have been passed on for millenia. Christianity is taking away our traditional values and replacing it with new foreign ideas. Obviously it is your choice which one to believe.
as much as the past needs to be seen and remembered, i think they should try to fix all the problems today. my cousin in korea has a disability where his muscles slowly deteriorate, and the hospital only gives them a secondhand wheelchair because they have no money. why isnt the country helping people like him? why isnt the government doing something about speeding cars and backstabbing hospitals? the people expect change to happen but they don't try to change it themselves.
I'm sorry to hear about your cousin. However, healthcare is a sensitive issue not only in Korea but in the USA. I would say the healthcare system is more dysfunctional in the US, at least everyone is covered in Korea under the universal healthcare plan. I think Korea has a long way to go to have a mature, just democratic system but it's getting there. Asians (esp Koreans) tend to see things with negative light (as if failed an exam or something) but emphasize progress... it's only been 50 years
yes healthcare has been a sensitive issue everywhere. but i was trying to point out that the hospital itself is working for money rather than to save lives. sure, in emergencies they do what they can to make that person live. but i don't like how they just wash the tools and reuse them on patient after patient, with no real sanitizing equipment, if not new tools altogether. and even though they have been progessing, i feel that they've progressed too fast for the population to adjust to.
for me, it feels like they tried to get to all the good traits of the greater countries, but did not lay down the foundation for it well enough. they try to build more apartments to help the population, but they use materials too toxic for people to live with. they advance in cellphones, but don't use their head to sell off the models to other countries. instead, they try to hold on to things like their rice or their cow, when foreign goods sell off cheaper.
wit hthe foreign meat and rice cheaper, the general population can actually afford meat. the meat thing really has to do with the age of it and i agree it is the current pres's fault for signing without the people's consent. and now they all hate him, but wasn't it them, who chose him? they all say that they never liked him, as though none of them chose him in the first place. i think they should try thinking about their own faults instead of always finding excuses and blaming others.

저는 개인적으로는 크리스천은 아니지만, 이 동영상은 참 감동적이었습니다. 다만, 동영상을 너무 기독교 중심으로 만드신 것이 조금 유감스럽습니다. 대한민국은 종교의 자유가 있는 나라입니다. 정말 진정된 선교를 하고 싶으시다면 후반부의 기독교에 대한 부분을 약간 줄였으면 하는 생각이 듭니다.

@compeducator 후반부의 기독교에 대한 부분은 아주 중요합니다. 하나님이 도우시지 않았다면 우리나라가 이 같은 발전을 하지는 못했을 것입니다. 또한 주변국들을 볼 때 우리나라는 지금도 더욱 위기롭다는 말이 맞습니다. 그러나 이런 가운데 평화통일과 또한 주변국가에 당당하게 설 수 있는 것은 지금 우리나라 스스로는 불가능하다고 봅니다. 다만 하나님이 도우신다면 이 일이 가능할 것입니다. 마지막 장면, 그 악한 길에서 떠나 겸비하고 기도하여 내 얼굴을 구하면 내가 하늘에서 듣고 그 죄를 사하고 그 땅을 고칠지라는 말씀이 사실임을 믿습니다.

그중 장면에 " 사람을 죽여서 사람고기"를 먹는 관습이 소개되어지고 있읍니다!
실지 이 사람고기는 19세기까지 일본시골에서 전국적으로 행하여지고 있었읍니다!
예를들면 " 天明（天保）の飢饉때( 19세기초옆) " 에는 기근때 시골전국에서
지나가는 행인을 죽여서 먹는 짓이 도꾸가와막부의 기록에 등장합니다!

i am a chinese korean, but when i was out of china, i can proudly say that i am a korean. i am so proud to be a pure korean whatever how poor history we had before. i will never forget to educate my kids to be proud of korea. both the past korea and present korea.

I have been part of a Korean group at UC Berkeley. Couple years back, we held a academic seminar on "dong book gong jung" (China's claming of goguryo's history as theirs) and what we need to do about it. When I was trying to publicize this event, most of the Korean Americans didn't even know what goguryo was. Did they know where Ephesus was? Oh yes sir, and they gave me scriptures for me to dwell on from Ephesians. Well how useless! Other countires claim our heritage while we denounce our own

well to be honest, i didn't really know that much about the korean history(despite having taken sat morning korean school) until my junior and senior year, when there was a korean show called 느낌표 that came out and was talking about this topic. i heard the names, but never understood it and never really bothered to look it up really. so from my own experience, i feel that the KAs, when they do fight for some korean right, don't do it out of knowledge, but out of the whole spur of the moment thing

(if you are adamant about God being the sole God and dismissing the other gods in diff religions, there is nothing to talk about. i always question my textbooks. i know the account of the civil war in north and south of the eastern us is different in their books, and i don't believe all that info they give about war especially. that is what was made public, not the whole truth. and i don't really think koreans should have written the bible. i don't think it should have been a person If it really was God's word. if God really wanted to save humans, why didnt he just write the bible himself in all the languages in the world

I don't think you misunderstood. I'm personally a non-believer, and if KA (Korean-Americans) are going to read some sort of pseudo-history book supposedly written by Paul and others (we do'nt even know who wrote the old testament) then they should rather learn about their own heritage.

Christianity in Korea was introduced in early 1800s. This means that all Koreans including your ancestors went to hell.

i personally have gone to church since the day i was born, and never questioned it until i got into youth group. my dad especially is a very devoted christian, and i had always found it annoying when he would always force me to pray before eating, but i thought that was because i wasnt a good believer, and then i began to hate church itself because of the way it never had anything to do with God but more about socializing. so i guess i'm not a christian in a sense.

i don't believe that the Bible isn't real, but i also believe that the bible isn't purely true because it was written by man. and really, if only believers were given salvation, most of the churches in the world would be nothing but houses of hell. and i have asked that question before, and i never really got a definite answer, except that maybe they were saved because it wasn't their fault they didn't know. if it was like that, then i would rather not know at all too.

Some say history is written by the winners. The same skepticism can be applied to the Bible. While history books has been passed down generations by the winners and thus biased, and the Bible (claimed as historical text by many) is written, translated and modified by Christian believers. Now the objectivity of Bible as truthful recount of Jesus is very questionable. For me, I don't believe in any books that has a cover, even college textbooks. You gotta have some skepticism for everything.

But most disappointing is to see Korean-American kids learning about Jewish history (in form of old testament) every Sunday when they don't even know jack crap about ancient Korean history. They would name all biblical heroes, but no heroes from goguryo, balhae, and dismiss dangun as a mythical being. I'm just sad that the Koreans didn't write that stupid book (otherwise everyone in the world would be studying Korean history on Sunday)

and from historical facts, ancestors and traditions were in some ways more advanced than we are now. and the traditions were made to balance out our lives. so i would rather follow traditions than go on retreats every summer and winter to pray. isn't praying to god all the time a sort of idolizing too? people say there are no idols in christianity, yet they idolize the cross symbol and pray to it all the time. and they say praying to a golden cow is wrong.

i was also told that you should never love your family more than God. but i don't know how that's really possible, when you know nothing about this God. and why should God be the only one with the right to kill off populations and get angry? why does HE teach that, and kill off people just because they were sinful? then are christians allowed to kill off prostitutes and rapists because theyre sinful?

but frankly, i think God should have clarified his existence and the way he wants us to go if he really meant to save us. even if i went to hell without my family, i'd still be with my nonbeliever friends, and i'd meet nonbeliever celebrities i never got to meet in real life. and besides. how did God save the jews and the soldiers and innocent bystanders as they were killed in all the various wars? what is the miracle that God has put upon us? i don't know what it is. he's just false hope to me.

I found this video very moving, but I completely disagree with the content. Our (Korean) tradition for thousand years have been respecting and worshipping our ancestors. Christians see this as "worshipping of an idol." And shun us from performing our rituals that have been passed on for millenia. Christianity is taking away our traditional values and replacing it with new foreign ideas. Obviously it is your choice which one to believe.

as much as the past needs to be seen and remembered, i think they should try to fix all the problems today. my cousin in korea has a disability where his muscles slowly deteriorate, and the hospital only gives them a secondhand wheelchair because they have no money. why isnt the country helping people like him? why isnt the government doing something about speeding cars and backstabbing hospitals? the people expect change to happen but they don't try to change it themselves.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin. However, healthcare is a sensitive issue not only in Korea but in the USA. I would say the healthcare system is more dysfunctional in the US, at least everyone is covered in Korea under the universal healthcare plan. I think Korea has a long way to go to have a mature, just democratic system but it's getting there. Asians (esp Koreans) tend to see things with negative light (as if failed an exam or something) but emphasize progress... it's only been 50 years

yes healthcare has been a sensitive issue everywhere. but i was trying to point out that the hospital itself is working for money rather than to save lives. sure, in emergencies they do what they can to make that person live. but i don't like how they just wash the tools and reuse them on patient after patient, with no real sanitizing equipment, if not new tools altogether. and even though they have been progessing, i feel that they've progressed too fast for the population to adjust to.

for me, it feels like they tried to get to all the good traits of the greater countries, but did not lay down the foundation for it well enough. they try to build more apartments to help the population, but they use materials too toxic for people to live with. they advance in cellphones, but don't use their head to sell off the models to other countries. instead, they try to hold on to things like their rice or their cow, when foreign goods sell off cheaper.
