I once got to 40.4 mph measured by a computer on my Trek 400 road bicycle at the bottom of a ginormous hill going into Council Grove, KS, that was with a tailwind. 50 is possible, but you'd need narrow tires with true wheels, a steep, long, clear hill, and a tailwind.

S. Congress in Austin, Tx. about a mile and a half long hill starts off nice and gentle then bam! Get into a nice tuck and watch as you breeze past all the cars. Best done in the middle of the night.
