  • how do you download opera mini to palm pixi

  • Opera mini is not a real browser ffs... can you use javascript with OperaMini? The answer is "maybe", but the whole page has to reload completely!

  • Of course Opera Mini was faster. Duh, it uses a proxy server to lower jpeg/gif quality then send it to the phone. It does NO post processing of the CSS, etc. nor does it even have to load the entire page. Typical web pages loaded using Opera Mini are smaller by a 1:6 ratio vs. a non-proxied page.

The Palm Pre's browser has none of this. The Pre browser is slower at loading pages than Opera Mini, but it also can load a lot of pages that Opera Mini can't.

6 one way, half dozen the other...

  • theres no way that the palm pre in the video is running on an EVDO connection. the load times on that pre are on a 1xrtt data speed. i have used opera mini on a samsung instinct, and it was definately an improvement over the one that came in the phone. But if you do a comparison, you need to show the data icon on both phones to be fair and not confuse someone who may be considering purchasing handset A or B. the load time on that pre was way too slow for an EVDO connection. My 2 cents

  • eat shit. my pre does not take 40 sec to load on any page, not even 10 sec. windows mobile is a glitched out piece of donkey balls ! American product = trash

  • Aww did I make your Palm Pre sad??

Point is, Opera Mini is a cross-platform web browser. It's on WinMo AND Blackberry right now. Why not add Palm Pre to the list? Then you guys could enjoy it too.

If you ever used Opera Mini, you would understand.

Btw, YouTube is American, so you might as well just leave. Also, your computer's operating system (PC or Mac) is American. Dam, I guess you're surrounded by great American products! Opera ISN'T American, but it rocks too.

  • @andrewbares damn youre right, ill respect that comeback.

  • and by the way, nobody cares, NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE OPERA, idk why such a video was made. and apparently so do a lot of people, they gave it 2 stars, o no wait nevermind, i mean 1 and a half stars

  • Because lots of Pre fanboys watched it.

Wow, you really know how to argue, lol.

And as much as I hate Opera, their mobile browser IS the best, as you could see, but keep denying due to your extreme patronage for the Pre.

  • I sure do don't I? you keep saying you hate the opera, so why compare it in the first place? jw

  • Because that's fair. I put bias aside.

  • well, you can't really make it biased anyway can you lol anyway Im sorry for arguing in the first place, I take everything back in this video and the other one

  • Hey smart ass... Damn has an N,

  • This test shows nothing, you obviously cleared all the cache and cookies on the pre, and did not on the winmo phone. There are way more videos on youtube that show the speed of the pres browser. Which is faster than the regular iphone 3g and a tad behind the 3gs. Your test proves nothing, and before you call me a fan boy, i own a tp2 on sprint.

  • Actually the opposite...

I just flashed my WinMo phone with a new ROM, so there was NO cache in Opera Mini.

The Pre, however, I might have actually left in the cache.

Dude, you have to understand the SCIENCE of it. Opera Mini has SERVER SIDE COMPRESSION. That means the website is compressed so that it can be sent over smaller bandwiths faster. The Palm Pre and iPhone web browsers DON'T have that, they're all on thir own.

So, of course Opera Mini will win. Servers > phone, lol.

  • There no way to prove what you said.

I did the same test on a friends pre and it loaded the page quicker than both

  • @andrewbares Opera's solution isn't scalable. It only works because they are a minority in the browser market.

  • Only Fags with no bitches nor degree make such a vid. FAGGOT

  • Comment removed

  • the reason it load everything faster is because operas servers remove unnecessary data from the sites then it sends it to the phone. i wish the pre could run it since opera on my old blackberry was so bad ass.

  • hmmm, what website were you loading? that took a pretty long time for both phones, i have the htc touch pro, (sprint) and that's not exactly a fast phone and most websites that i visit are done loading within 20 or 30 seoconds.

  • I should also point out that the Pre broswer downloaded 90% of the relevant data by the same time the opera finished, that last bit that takes so long to finish are usually ads or the last bits of a picture, but for all intents and purposes the pages is done, and can be zoomed in and navigated.

  • I should aslo point out that the Opera Mini browser loaded all the relevant data 2x faster than the Pre browser.

Opera Mini had text loaded - 15 seconds

Pre had text loaded (with white background) - 30 seconds

You're argument greatly backfired on you. But dude, I love the Pre too. I actually HATE Opera because they complain about Microsoft so much, but hey, Opera Mini IS a faster browser.

I do fair reviews, and I show facts only, not opinnions. Thanks!

  • Know my argument did not backfire, people need to know the relevant difference is what information each device is actually rendering to understand the differences. Also to do a proper comparison between the Pre's browser speed vs Opera. Opera should have it's highest detail settings turned on, and both devices need to be connected to the same wifi network to eliminate possible delays in cell networks. So what you have is not an apple's to apple's comparison.

  • Dude, I already did the WiFi comparison.

Okay, high quality setting on Opera Mini is a little smarter, thanks for the thought.

And if you take your theory about "relevant data", Opera Mini loads all of that in 15 seconds, and you could be using the page in 15 seconds, while Pre, it took 30 seconds to get to that point. So Pre is still slower. But hey, if you're fine with the wait and think that it's worth it, then that's perfectly fine! The Pre browser is really nice, but I perfer speed.

  • I agree with Ben7seven7. It's not really a fair fight, the opera probably has the mobile web on to

  • Lol, what a terrible argument.

It loaded the full page, as you can see.

The reason why it loaded faster (as I've said 500 times) is because Opera's servers COMPRESS the webpage, so that it loads faster! Server-Side compression will always beat the Pre or any other phone that doesn't have that.

Hopefully Opera writes Mini for the Pre. Once you use that browser, you'll be impressed at the speed. You will be. No, you just will be.

  • thank you so very much for finding the time in your obviously very busy day (because you wouldn't have made this video if you weren't a very busy person right?) to reply to my message, COMPRESS is a word for REMOVING UNNECESSARY DATA so while the pre is loading all the adds and unnecessary stuff, the opera is basically saying this is too difficult for me because i am such a crappy phone. and no i won't be since i am not going to be buying such a terrible phone

  • Compressing isn't removing unneccessary data. Look at the video again, is the webpage missing anything? NO.

    So, you're incorrect, sorry.

  • I'm sorry but i can't see it. maybe you should have zoomed in

  • Lol, I zoomed in on both phones.

  • The Palm Pre just came out and still needs some tweaking. Give it a break. It is ahead of most smart phones that have been out on the market for years already. Give the Pre 6 months and it will blow by the competition.

  • Idk that in 6 months Palm would be able to make a browser as fast as Opera, but I'm not bashing the Pre either. It's just comparing. Opera has a lot of experience in mobile browsers, and currently they're ahead of everyone. They will be tough to beat.

But hopefully, Opera Mini will be coming to the Pre. Then it will have the fastest browser paired with the best multitasking WebOS!

  • we dont know if apps r running in the background

it might take longer to load page wen u start from homescreen. ppl r not always gna hv the internet app open and

another test is check how much loads in background wen ur multitasking

i like opera browser (hope palm pre gets it as well) but this test doesnt prove anytin

  • 8. No difference from starting from the start screen or from another page

    9. That would be a good test, multitasking background web page loading.

    10. This test proved it all, since all your points failed. Opera Mini IS faster, hands down. I'll put up a WiFi video now, since you guys compain soo much.

  • 8 proof is needed

10 this test proves nothing. deal with it. a test is only valid as long as it is a fair test. this isnt bcos u r changing more than 1 variable at a time.

  • wat about quality being worse on winmo

ur winmo phone displays less on screen cos of less resolution

connectivity depends on area since they r on dif carriers

signals might be interfering with each other wen they r so close

3g probably has more ppl using it than gprs so its more crowded and slowed down

as much as u wna argue ur point this test is not fair therefor it isnt valid. there r 2 many variables u hvnt/cant control

  • Dude, screen resolution/size doesn't matter. They both have to load the same full page. Opera loads faster because of OPERA TURBO!! Why do you think opera created Turbo, just for fun? No!!

3G has been proven wayyy faster than non-3G.

The pages load same speed even when phones r miles apart.

It was as fair as it gets.

  • wat about quality? winmo uses less colors

signal interference. hv u actually tested miles apart? i wud like to c that and it stil doesnt mean ur in an area with gud sprint coverage

altho it is fast, turbo cud just be a marketing strategy

also display size/resolution does matter cos it can effect amount of processing speed required to display that info

i hv a feelin u dont know the meaning of a fair test. wen u find out post a proper fair test and then maybe ppl will give u more than 1/5 stars.

  • I don't think you understand the meaning of spelling. Why don't you test the phones MILES apart? Good luck video taping that... That has to go on my top 10 dumbest things i've ever heard.

He was using EDGE on the Winmo, which if you didn't know is a lot slower than 3G.

No screen res. doesn't make a big difference, don't be stupid.

How is server assisted browsing a market strategy, you make no sense!

  • Opera Mini can't render and or log in to secure sites like Palm Pre can. Also Opera Mini is recieving compressed images and data, so it has less information to download than the Pre's broser which is recieving the full site uncompressed. Also the opera mini browser by default is set to recieve low res images, set evertything to high and it does noticable take longer depending on your connection.

  • d meanin of spelling? wtf is that supposed to mean? that has got to be 1 of d dumbest things i hv heard as well. he just said the phones will load at the same speed miles apart but he has no proof of this and speed does depend on location if u didnt know. i know wat edge and 3g r. screen color which ppl keep ignoring does make a dif cos winmo has less colors. like loading a game with less quality. can u understand me know or r u 2 stupid?

  • wen phones r close together there can be signal interference.

and calling something turbo cud just b a marketing strategy regardless of the technology used. perhaps i dont make sense to u but u must actually know a bit about phones to understand me then.

  • this isnt a fair test

site might hv been cached/dont know browsing history

connections used r dif - 3g coverage mite b bad in ur location

probably more ppl use 3g for internet than gprs so its more crowded

winmo uses less colors - quality is worse

winmo has less resoultion so less to display on the screen

the signals mite b interfering w/ each other wen theyr so close

we dont know if apps r running in the background

  • 7. On the Pre, no apps running in the background, but on WinMo (the winner), there were 4 apps running in the background, lol.

  • proof pls???

  • I said so myself. And in my WiFi video, I showed what is running in the background.

Dude just because the Pre lost doesn't mean it'd bad! Lol, I'm using my Pre to type this! But the point of this vid is that Opera Mini needs to come to the Pre, because it just IS a faster (multiplatform) browser.

  • i'd take the pre and the browser over any feature phone..or winmo phone..safari..or android.

  • I guess you wouldn't be taking any phone calls then, cuz you can't answer calls when browsing the web on the Pre!

But yea, the Pre is really nice. Multitasking is just soo amazing.

  • That's actually wrong. While it's true that Sprint CDMA doesn't have the capability of simultaneous data/voice use, that doesn't mean that it blocks it from ANY use.

When a phone call is received, the data connection is closed and is re-opened once the voice connection is closed. So if your browsing, you CAN receive calls, it'll just temporarily close the data connection until you are done with voice.

  • Nope. You're wrong about that. I know what I'm talking about.

If you're loading (I repeat, loading) a web page and someone tries to call you, the phone call will go straight to your voicemail and you do not get a chance to answer the call.

Once a web page is loaded, you can answer calls, but if it's loading, then you're screwed.

I tested this (on the Pre), but it might be different on you're phone (if it's not the Pre).

  • i just tested this and it does not go to voicemail unless you are in 1x. when it loads the circle still spins but the call comes through in the back of my house i can only get 1 x when i am using that it does not ring but goes str8 to vmail..

  • Hm idk, I guess that's how it works. Still, it kind of scares me away from surfing the web, lol.

  • Opera uses a special web proxy that modifies the site content so its not loading the normal page.

  • Opera IS loading the normal page, it's just compressed, since Opera uses Opera Turbo. Pictures and more are compressed so that web pages load faster on a slower connection.

But that is not important because it's a comparison between browsers. Opera Mini is faster. Plain and simple. Why it's faster, well because Opera designed it better (with Opera Turbo).

  • lmao are u a fuckin noob, not all location has good sprint 3g stupid fuck, look at phonedog video and others they only compare browser with wifi test, and they compare network with 3g test.. so fuck off

  • First, chill out.

Second, 3G will ALWAYS be faster than non-3G, so it's a fair test.

Third, the 3G is proven to be faster in my area, as proven to myself by the download speed, so the Pre had the advantage, but still lost.

    I'm not a noob either.

    Thanks!

  • not even a good test, try wifi if u want to measure browser performance

  • You're incorrect, it was a verry good test, just listen:

The WinMo phone is using GPRS, which isn't even 3G, while the Palm Pre is using 3G!!!! So the Palm Pre has about 3x the data speed and it still looses! So if I had WiFi connected on both, then WinMo would have smoked the Pre eve more!

It was an unfair test for WinMo, but WinMo still won. Therefore we know which has the best browser.

  • Were you running any apps in the background?

    If not, then... wow.

  • Nothing in the background on the Pre, but about 3-4 apps in the background on Windows Mobile.

I got annotations up too, so you can see the time.
