  • does any know the name of the person who song this version of wade in the water?????

  • Could not stop laughing xD

  • like if you have to watch this for school

  • nice to see im not the only one here because of school.. in the process of writing the essay right now.

  • i wanna go to this school so bad i luv to dance

  • The woman who's holding that umbrella... her arm must be exhausted XD

  • had to see this for school this year ...

  • Beautifully inspiring, and miles above just the religious...spiritual!!

  • @LakeDreamer1 Totally agree!!!

  • Joyful! Beautiful bodies!

  • my high school dance teacher studied their and we have had student from Alvin Ailey perform it was truly an honor watching them dance it will bring you to tears

  • AWESOME!! Taking from them this summer!! cant wait!!

  • wow most ppl on the first pg I want to slap them with some good knowledge of dance....smh -_-

  • fucking. retarded.

  • what is this i dont even

  • @greg3507 - this is a song about escaping slavery by using rivers and other bodies of water to hide you from slavers and their dogs.

  • If you all love this dance so much, want to explain what this means?

  • @holyhades666 "wade in the water" were slaves way of communicating, song and dance became a part of that esp. old negro spirituals such as this one

  • alvin aileys good guys. @burtonboy96 you gay! eat ma shit lol

  • @Jessbitchesz shut the fuck up. For one, calling people gay is extremely rude to not only the person but to the people out there who are actually homosexual. Next, learn how to speak English. Finally, this dance isn't even that great. They were clearly out of sync during the duet. I have seen better out of amateurs on SYTYCD after only a week of practice.

  • @SteelFaceTitanium - I didn't notice them being out of beat at all. The synchronicity is different for much of African American music because it comes from polyrhythmic African roots... just sayin'.

  • gotta love our dance appreciation course lol

  • [this video]

  • i have to watch this for school.... im a 15 year old boy with testosterone raging through my body and this physically hurts me to watch

  • @burtonboy96 ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • @burtonboy96 why would you even say something like that? are you aware that Ailey is one of the most phenomenal companies of all time? this choreography is literally legendary. as a dancer i'm insulted. if you have nothing nice to say about this work, don't comment.

  • @bwayboy9514 He is entitled to comment just like you are, futhermore, no grown up should ever be insulted by a comment someone posts anonymously. If you are also 15 years old like him, at least you would have an excuse to be insulted so if you are indeed 15, forgive my comment as it may also insult you!

  • @gemmint10 As it happens, I will turn 16 later this month. So yes, I am 15 just like him. I'm not insulted by your comment, but my only thing is that this piece is someone's artistic vision that came to life. I think it's awful to put it down in that way. That's all.

  • Comment removed

  • wow this is so stupid

  • Did anybody else get goosebumps from this? This was so beautiful!

  • I just love this piece!

  • eh... oeps... haha alvin ailey i ment

  • so.... i hpe i'm right.... this dance is dance by the group revelations and the choreographer is alin ailey???

  • @musicgirlloveschrist No the piece is called revelations, and this is only one section in the piece, it's around half hour long maybe longer. The company is called Alvin Ailey, after the man who originally created the company x

  • One of the best Ailey companies, EVER. I'm always inspired and have seen them five or six times over the years. :)

Thank you for sharing your beautiful art with the dance community and beyond

  • Simply excellent! Praise God, and thank you for your creative spirit -- Alleluia!

  • WOW!!!! Incredible stuff.

  • I just saw it live today. The new young dancers keep it fresh and powerful as Alvin Alley would have wanted, uplifting our Black American dance form. RIP AA and many heartfelt thanks!!!

  • UNFORGETTABLE So Black & Beautiful. Can't be touched. It is established in heaven.

  • UNFORGETTABLE

  • Beautiful! =)

  • My favorite piece ever :) my mom made it a tradition to see Alvin Ailey with me and my sister ever since I was 4 years old. I'm 16 now...in the future...I hope to continue the tradition with my own daughter

  • i just saw it for the first time today..makes me feel proud of my african roots

  • I saw them a week ago as well and they were absolutely beautiful. The video is good but is no comparison to seeing it live because their intense energy is so prevalent the entire time!! Gorgeous!!

  • I can watch this piece over & over & over & over & over & OVER & still be moved, enthused, delighted , astounded, astonished & moved. Genius.

  • i saw this live today!!! sooo good!!!

  • AMAZING!!!! Love them!!

  • Wow... So fantastic. I got chills!

  • Ive seen this performance live 3 times since I was 8 and I still love it. Its just amazing

  • Just saw them last night. I cried. :')

  • iWass Der

  • just saw them in Chapel Hill!!!! they are so AWESOME!!!!

  • who will dislike this??!! this is amazing! i saw them perform in Fox Theatre with my dance class. they were FANTASTIC!!!!

  • graceful and authentic!

The best dance company ever in my humble opinion!.

  • I don't think the Alvin Ailey Dance Company should be an all black company, considering we should have advanced to the point where we recognise that that is a form of racism; it's prejudice against white people. Saying that, I do understand why Revelations should remain danced by black people, simply because of the context behind the dance.

  • @JadeFrankieSlug I disagree they are sticking to there history and their african style of dance. The fact it is an all black dance company has nothing to do with racism. It is the stories that they portray that calls for an all black cast. If you want to make it into racism there is still alot of it in the world and just america. For an example, people have not got part on broadway musical because of their skin color.

  • @mjivens I know that, for example The Lion King has an all african-american cast.

I am not saying that it is racism, I just believe that it should be progressing into a company of all races, just as all other companies are, to show that we as the world are actually uniting together.

Whilst works such as Revelations should remain as an all-black cast, because of the context surrounding the works, I believe that new works should be created with equal opportunities for every dancer.

  • @JadeFrankieSlug I'm not racist or anything but the dance studio was made for african americans. When Alvin Ailey was dancing at the time it was really hard for the black community to get into a dance studio. Also i agree w/ mjivens they are sticking to their history.

  • @JadeFrankieSlug Umm, I just saw this last week and it's definitely not an all black company. Also, Revelations was not danced by only black people.

  • @royalxanadu And all the dancers were probably amazing, regardless of their aesthetics.

I'm just annoyed at people complaining at Lee Harper; if she was the most talented dancer with the most potential at dance, then she definitely earned her place there.

Dance is about talent and expression, not aesthetics. That is why I am not fond of ballet - all companies are very picky about the bodies of their dancers, which is not fair.

  • @CHRISBROWNSLADY I am a Popper, a Locker, a Krumper, a Houser [House Dancer], a Liquid Dancer, a Rocker, a B-girl and a Rave Dancer and I deeply am touched to the point where I want to collaborate with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, but I don't know what will happen. Overall, I am patient of having that chance and I would love to collaborate with you in Alvin Ailey one day.

  • @CHRISBROWNSLADY Got it!

  • I saw the Alvin Theater peformance the other day at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. I was not happy to say the least that they have white dancers dancing Revelations. This is our story! Black people can't have nothing authentically ours anymore. I wanted to scream! The white dancers took away my enjoyment of the performance. I'm sure there were other black dancers that could easily fill those dance slots. I'm just saying!

  • @ASU19992006 White dancers in Alvin Ailey is not a new thing. Lee Harper was in the company decades ago; look her up.

  • @somekindaverb I don't know who Lee Harper is and don't care. I still say this should be an all black production at all times. There never should have been white dancers dancing to Revelations. They are the reason for the struggles that we have gone through as people in this hostile country in the first place. A white girl can never understand a black woman's pain, and the things black women have had to endure over the centuries in this country.

  • i saw them at the kennedy center yesterday, it was great

  • I love it I love it I love it I love it I just love it I love it I love it I love it I love it Love it Just love it !!!

  • now i feel like dancing

  • How can anyone possibly dislike this masterpiece of American dance?! This is perfection. I've seen this several times in person and it is always fresh and uplifting. Simply a classic.

  • I love Alvin Ailey!!!!! Everytime they come to Atlanta I see them. Their performances are so moving! Well done!

  • they r so good i went to see them perform =)

  • I just love Alvin Ailey!!!! The company is so talented, I want to see them live!!!

  • modern dance to negro spirituals=genius

  • What year?

  • Breathtaking! What a beautiful blend of african, gospel and western ballet..The most vibrant and exciting ballet I've ever seen! Bravo!

  • @angelialvares Oh yes! Gorgeous and very exciting!

  • Would not were those pant though ill show off to much junk

  • love revelations could never see it enough. for aspiring dancers such as myself, even if you cant dance with ailey. never stop and never give up dancing professionally. my motto is, don't give up your dreams until you're dead

  • I saw them in Toulouse today. It was just so amazing ! I want to be a professional dancer and I think that dancing in Ailey's company is the dream of most of the modern jazz dancers.

  • BRAVO THANK YOU FOR POSTING

  • this is my dream job

  • What's the title of the first song?

  • they came to my town and I saw themmm!! :]

  • amazing! ive seen it live about 3 times :)

  • Had a fantastic day at Millenium Stadium yesterday doing massage therapy for some of the amazing dancers in this NYC dance company.... and also got to see the show ... thanks to Sheyi for having us there , Tim for arranging it and especially to Kirven Boyd and Michael Mc Bride for there wonderful feedback!! Cach this talented compant at Millenium centre tonight only .... if there are any tickets left!!!

  • Just got home from seeing "Revelations" performed at Sadlers Wells in London & no the video does not do the live performance justice but glad it's here as a reminder!

Thank the Universe for Alvin Ailey!

  • Excellent dancers and choreography! So much better in person, I've been fortunate enough to see it twice. Although, I love/hate how it turns the theatre into a mad house. The only time I've Los Angeles' Music Center turned into a football stadium with people screaming and singing along was when Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre was there, lol.

  • These videos do not do the performances justice. When you see it live from good seats, you can truly enjoy the total performance, dancing, light and sound effects etc . I saw it at least 5 times and never got bored. Totally Awesome.

  • I love the music. Ive never seen teh show but want to see it wow. I wish when I was younger I could have done something like this but I lack to put down the bugers and I had flat feet.

  • i watched this three times live then had to watch the recording for ballet at my school three times.

  • Best Dance Music youtube.com/watch?v=ZutsW1xhyA4

  • This gives me chills. I was fortunate enough to see Ailey II when they came to my college three years ago. Revelations got a standing ovation at the end!

  • What's the best dance class to take in NYC, for ballet? :D

  • this clip is not only wade in the water, the first part (until 2.52) is called processional :)

  • so amazing i've watched it so many times....never gets old

  • wow thats all i can say

  • joy... pure joy!

  • awsome! I am doing a Recital dane to this song. I love this song so much. My dance teacher told my to look up Alvin Ailey.

  • My mom has taking me to see Alivin Ailey every year ever since I was 4 years old. I hope to continue this tradition with my daughter when I get old enough

  • check out my remix of rude boy!

  • @aquapower02 i mean check out my wade in the water parody(

  • i absolutely love the Alvin and Ailey Dance Company....i see them every time them come to the Fox in Atlanta

  • me and my dance class has opened up for them 2 years in a row n i;ve seen them perform like 4 times beat that lol =)

  • This is definantly my most watched clip on youtube, almost daily id say.

  • I have seen them live. Revelations is amazing!

  • I have seen them too, back in their heyday....saw Revelations when Jamison was in the company...knocked me OUT!

  • @herakatgrl Absolutely...I have too...many years ago. It was a moment in my life that I will remember forever!

  • @herakatgrl Me too!

  • @herakatgrl I've seen it live twice, and plan to bring my children to see it several times :)

  • Love it!!!! Alvin Ailey Dance Company can't miss!

  • I am white, and I am also enjoying this music.

  • Never miss it ! Thanks for the post ! xo -c-c-

  • I ve really enjoyed this selection. I am black and I really like all of it words cant explain how I feel right now. thanks for the post

  • I love this! This is absolutely wonderful and inspiring. I am a first grade teacher and my students love it so much they want to perform a version of it for their black history program.

  • Lindooo!!Amo a técnica do Alvin Eiley!

  • This piece is one of my favorites of the entire show. I'd love to be able to dance like that!

I just wish I didn't have to do a report on Revelations.

  • beyonce so totally mimicked this in the destiny fulfilled concert

  • she sure did. when she performed baby boy.

  • i LOVE THIS!

  • STUNNING AND GORGEOUS

  • I just want to know who in the hell are you talking to. Becuz u sound like an ignorant ASS.

  • such an amazing show....i had to do a major paper on his work...he was so talented

  • Love this piece :)

  • i sung this song as a duet!

  • I love that they do at 4:47! hahaha :D

  • Remarkable...

  • so fantastic

  • its about u know the slaves are calling eachother to the river by singing so their masters would not know

  • 2:51 is where my friend said was the best

  • Even these old negro spirituals are telling the world that the slaves and their seed are in fact the lost tribes of Israel gone into captivity as scripture states until the time of the gentile is fulfilled. Excellent dance number!

  • This is amazing. So much talent, and so much emotion. I love it!

  • I had the priviledge to see them perform this in Salford UK. I love the way she gently convulses & twitches in his arms near the end...like she's posessed. It's a masterpiece...

  • The entrance of the first girl' signifies the awakening.

They then all awaken from the depth.. The depths of the sea, meaning, the dead. they all proceed forward towards the promise.

    The umbrella signifies bright prospects.

    End.

    Halleluja!

  • No, they are having a baptismal. In the old South, black churches had their baptismal at a river.

  • Hey 'Giddout of here!!!!

When the original question was asked of the meaning, Where were you...????

    EXACTLY!!!!

    Nowhere to be found!

But now that i've replied with (at least) some kind of answer, You suddenly got a voice!

Forget it buster.. My version works better.

    Nuenas Notches' Cabron!

  • There is no need to be rude. I was not responding to your comment, I don't even see yours, I was responding to "cubanbrown" and "Juwar74".

  • That was the cuban,,,,

    He was Using my screen!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @cubanbrown I don't know where you got all that from but this entire section is about baptism.

  • The song itself is a "coded" slave song, but these aren't the original lyrics. The original was supposed to guide people who were escaping. Even with different words, it's a terrific song.

  • this is crazy!!!

    I love it!!

  • This is an absolute masterpiece. Tears streaming down my face and it's not my first time seeing it, either. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • 2:51 for my convenience

  • It was thanks to seeing Alvin Ailey perform at the Clinton's first inauguration ceremony that dance first became accessible to me. Thanks! By the way, how they make it seem so easy. And how on earth does the prima ballerina hold up the umbrella so long. I can't even hold my arm up that long with an empty hand.

  • im going to be an ailey dancer one day =)

  • Go for it! They are amazing. Good luck to you :)

  • thank so much!
