Re-read Emma's interview in seventeen and re-watch the interview of Emma talking about her crush on Tom,she said USED to like him.

You know that he knows it was Emma that had a crush on him when they were kids (she admitted to it) , but even though it is ancient history he still protects her now that she is a young woman.
