The fools didn't even realize that his 'audience participation' gesture @ 2:50 was an 'I give up, you idiots win' moment. Few things can quiet, delay or deter a classy LA woman when she's determined to get Micheal Bolton to autograph one of her boobs. Blame it on yoga and sex. Headstands and having their feet above their heads most of the time must have caused the leaking silicone to go to that empty place between their ears.
I think he did a pretty good version for a guy who doesn't sing that kind of music. Stupid hicks were just there hoping to see a mullet but jokes on them, he cut it.
It is a poor attempt truly. But for those who compare to Pavarotti, while I'm admiring of his legacy, he was not my favourite, especially on this song. Search 'Franco Corelli' for my idea of how this should be sung - fuller, rounder, more powerful tone.
@jonnybignote Poor attempt? God, you opera elitists. Bolton is a pop singer who has trained himself as a classical singer. I agree that he surely isn't the best one to sing this (his voice is lower than Pavarotti's too, to be fair), but he does a very admirable effort, considering that he is a pop/rock singer.
I'm not an opera elitist. I've never sat through an entire opera performance in my live. I'll rephrase - It's not very good....how is that? Some things should just not be bothered with - Barry Manilow singing Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, the great American songbook - Michael Bolton singing Turandot...the list goes on. I guess everyone has to pay the bills though...
What's that loud noise in the background? Ah yes, it is the sound of Puccini turning in his grave! Yes, Bolton is an outstanding pop singer and he is absolutely great in his own style. However, opera is not his area of expertise. Opera needs years of special training. The voice should never be amplified. If you see operatic singers using a mike, it is for recording or broadcasting purposes only, not for boosting a voice they don't really have.
@eatingbeansoup i agree, but it's like comparing a Ferrari with a Mercedes...a Ferrari is designed for race only...and Mercedes is like fit in any situation, suitable for everything like the voice of Michael Bolton...Pavarotti was only an opera singer like Ferrari only race car...i apreciate his effort, but if you really want to see Pavarotti getting amazed by his voice search on youtube Pavarotti&friends...you'll see there the REAL MICHAEL BOLTON!!!
@jonnybignote I've heard every song by Bolton I could find, including his '76 album. He actually goes up to Bs (below high Cs) and finally some D5s (high Ds), very impressive. Still, Bolton's true voice doesn't resemble a tenor of any sort AT ALL. Listen to his early performances like "Rocky Mountain Way", his voice is way too dark and heavy for any kind of a tenor, even the lowest ones. His technique is pretty incredible (it used to be worse), which results in his amazing highs.
I understand what you say about the timbre of his voice, but the categorization of a voice lies not within the kind of sound they make, but the range they have available - its a simple as that. Careful technique can craft an upper extension of maybe as much as a minor third, turning a high baritone into a low tenor - such as Placido Domingo. However, you cannot truly circumvent the physical nature or size of one's voice box or vocal chords.
@jonnybignote Categorization of a natural voice type is done by judging timbre, tessitura and general vocal colour and sound. Like you said, careful technique can help lower voices to sing higher roles and vice versa. Bolton's natural voice isn't that of a tenor, that is clear in his early recordings. He has just trained his voice very well, nowadays he can sing heldentenor roles convincinly because of his technique (even though his voice isn't high enough for it).
@jonnybignote Bolton's natural voice is that of a pretty high baritone, his technique allows him to sing like a lower tenor though. It is evident that he isn't naturally one, but rather has a VERY good technique to pull it off convincingly.
Also, there are lower voices with even higher notes than he has.
@jonnybignote Bolton is definitely a higher-placed baritone. His natural voice actually resembles Bruce Springsteen's voice a bit, it is just more powerful. He has trained himself as a tenor, but his true voice is a baritone.
Remember, baritones can hit high notes too. Check out "Say Hello 2 Heaven" by Temple of the Dog, you will hear high Es and one G(!) by a baritone that is Chris Cornell. It is all about technique, man. Even the lowest voices can train themselves as tenors.
I admire Bolton's voice, but he can not pull off what Pavoratti and others have done, but why do we expect him to? Wh not except HIS version of this wonderful song? I think he did an amazing job. Quite frankly anyone who will take the time to learn this song and how to properly do it deserves my respect. And for those who say he can't sing it right, let's hear you do it then.
If any of you idiots actually think that this guy does anything to this piece but shit all over it, then you don't deserve to hear a better recording than this one. Probably the worst attempt at Nessun Dorma ever. This asshole has never had a voice lesson and it shows.
On my 'bucket list' is to sing this someday..and I can't carry a tune for crap!!! But I love this aria!!!! I love when he sings vincero, its with strength, with courage, with defiance and with honor...Victory is mine!!!! Dedicated to our troops around the world..VINCERO!!! (Semper Fi USMC!)

Not bad, quite good actually, but this cannot be compared with the tenors at all.
PezrulezHaakon 2 months ago
@PezrulezHaakon Bolton is actually a high baritone singing with tenor-style, which makes this extremely impressive nonethless.

@GoodGuitarSolos
Yes he does this piece in his own way. I should have written "should not be compared" instead.

Check out 'When a man loves a woman' - falls completely in high or counter-tenor range - high C or something. I would never think of him as baritone.
