I'm looking forward to this too.... want to see how always strikes first benefits the high elves outside of the black guard unit with the banner and how effective that is as opposed to hatred.

As you will see, and if you do the math, Always Strikes First shreds a low Toughness, lightly armored opponent. The seven-wide Swordmasters produce 15 attacks WS5 S5. That will peel off the front rank of almost anything. The "banner" you reference is suredly the Banner of Hag Graef (grants Always Strikes First).

Yeah definitely looking forward to it... always seems to me like ASF is way underrated because of peeling off that front rank. The Black Guard with that Banner are a major problem, but I don't know why the HE can't do a lot of damage to all the other units with that ASF advantage (and with phoenix guard or dragon princes, they'd have a 50/50 even against that Black Guard unit with that banner)

It's ridiculous how much cheaper DE stuff is. BLACK GUARD are way bettter than all three of the big elite special infantry High Elf guides. Especially since they have a banner that makes them Always Strike First (which I assume you have).

I predict a Shawn effortless win.

@ClaudioAHenriquez Black Guard initiaitve is higher than everything in the HE army except for phoenix guard (their closest mirror) and dragon princes... with those 2 units it would be a roll-off so 50/50 chance to go first

Yeah, just like jthuffma says. Black Guard also have stubborn, Immune to Psychology, Hatred (every round) and cost 2 points a head LESS than their HE equivalents.

DE vs. HE is just not a fair matchup point for point, in my opinion.

Black Guard are indeed undercosted in my opinion. They are hands down one of the best units, maybe even THE best. Their only downside is low Toughness and Armor. But not usually a problem when you're standing on a mountain of corpses.

I agree. I play VC against a DE player most weeks and games usually boil down to Always Strikes First Black Guard vs. Regeneration Grave Guard. It gets a bit silly.

Good thing Gav Thorpe doesn't make codexes/armybooks anymore.
