I taught my horse to do this today because he is extremely tall, and I couldn't do the Indian swing onto him or anything, so I finally found your video and it helped me out so much. (: I love it!
Very cool. I have trouble getting on the drafts even standing on the fence and having stirrups. My method would have been to lead him up to that Mule or whatever sitting over there and clamber up.
horses do have great strength but if you were to try this with a arab then yes it may be harsh on their neck but for this big boy its nothing but lifting up a piece of hay hah :) he beautiful his coat reminds me of a Hershey bar haha
@kezzaFIDDY haha it is ridiculously hard to bareback mount a draft. I have one, almost 18 hands, and she is so tall I am teaching her to bow so I can get on bareback. They are also very slippery, which makes it harder.
@MissaCraze Horses are so wonderful. They will do whatever you want as long as they feel safe. I worked with him by first getting off of him further and further down his neck. Sometimes I would just lay over his neck for awhile so he would get used to me being on his neck. Then (with a stool) I started mounting him at his shoulder, then further and further down his neck. Next I began asking him to lower his head to let me get on. This video was shot after working with him for only 2 hours!
I loved the way you handled the situation. I see too many people on here beat their horses when they don't do what's expected. However, I wouldn't mount my horse by his neck. Ah well.
@Horsepassion4life Horses' necks are incredibly strong in the upward direction. They have an enormous ligament that acts like a giant rubber band to help them lift their head up. An average sized horse can grab a man my size by the shoulder and fling them across the paddock like a rag doll if they are aggressive. The draft horse I was working with barely noticed my weight on his neck.
@dlambert67 maybe, but they still have fragile things in their neck... Don't remember what it is... (my friend is vetenarian).. anyways, still like that. (I've done something like that before.. and the horse, like you said, didn't seems to notice any difference)
@horseexpertgirl I'm living around horses since i'm 2 yo and I'm now 20... I do own a horse also.. so yes I know about horses. They do have strong necks, but they r not elephants as well XD I don't if you think it's okay to do stuffs like that.... I just gave my point on which I wouldn't to that with my horses. ;) Everyone has the right to have their opinion! :D
@Horsepassion4life obviously you dont know much about horses. so let tell you, the neck of a horse is very very strong, one of the most muscled parts of the horses body in fact! so dont go saying bad things when you dont even know what you talking about.
@LetBabiesLive how r u to tell me I know little about horses? I was riding horses even before I knew walking...
they are trong but it doesn't mean you can do what even you want etc... If you've read the other answers I've given you would have seen it wasn't necessary to come back on that (I wrote that comment like what 8 months ago?) pass over it people!
@Howrse1000 i do absoulutly HATE the word unBROKE broke gives the hint tht u do want to have her fear you, use montey roberts meathods, it gives a MUCH BETTER RESULT
@MalteseLover11 But you have to realize the horse probably ways around 2,000lb. and they have alot more muscels in there nech than a human and that horse has a fairly thick and muscular neck :)
That's a hoot! And you're right: it's a really good thing he's such a good horse. I can see how that technique could go horribly wrong with a less cooperative mount. Cowboy up!
he seemed to get a kick out of that. literally.

aww.. he's such a sweetheart. Did he step on your foot? lol.
Regardless, I still pity his neck, though he did seem to be able to hoist you up quite effortlessly

@Horsepassion4life If you're friend is the vet, I'd let them do the talking. Otherwise, no, their necks aren't "fragile."
