I felt the same way when I made the video, then I was shown the mistaken identity as seen in the first few seconds written in the flag with info. GEO. Oh well in a perfect world far from here maybe..............
Jimmy Forrest played in Duke Ellington's band briefly in 1951. Incidentally, Ellington wrote a tune titled "Happy-Go-Lucky-Local" in 1946 that Night Train is borrowed from (if not BLATANTLY ripped off). It's a great melody written by one of the best composers of the 20th century (EKE).
I do not care what is said, I used to listen to this after 11:00pm in Houston. Until I got caught. by my Dad. My sister still has the 78. Please enjoy this part of American History.
@losopanda orchestra=kinda gay. my jazz combo plays it down and dirty, and I'm talkin ssssllloooowwww. add in like 15 solos and we've taken it for a half hour session it's sick
The original is from DUKE ELLINGTON Orchestra (Jimmy "stole" it by taken a portion of it and making the melody into one tune)... originals project research says:
Night Train Jimmy Forrest 11-27-51
Derived (lifted?) from "That's The Blues, Old Man" by Johnny Hodges (Bluebird 1117, 1940) and "Happy Go Lucky Local, Part 2" by Duke Ellington (Musicraft 461, 1946). Both Hodges and Jimmy Forrest were members of Ellington's band, which explains the path of the compositions and riffs.
Just a great classic. I first heard Ted Heath and his Big Band play Night Train in the Davis Theatre, Croydon in 1952 or 1953, and still have it in my memory all those years ago. Terrific version here; thanks a million.
Huge hit for Jimmy, taken from a section from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn Happy Go Lucky Local. If you ever listen to Duke version the band and the arrangement was so great the trumpets and saxes sounded like a train!
@hremdldw THANK YOU for mentioning the Ellington band in connection with this! Somewhere on YouTube is a splendid recording of Duke's band, featuring, as you note, the incomparable William Alonzo "Cat" Anderson doing impossibly high trumpet notes as the train whistle.
So, this is the song Alan Alda was scat-singing during the episode where he was temporarily blinded (and un-nerving one of the army nurses in their own tent)!
Thanks for the musical history lesson. It was most informative. :-)
At least one more city . broadcast from Freeport LI NY a guy Lee Donohue had a radio show also called Night Train, used this as his theme, circa 1957 to 60 or so
This reminds me of long, logn ago. I didn't think I'd ever find it. I particularly liked Earl Bostic's cover. Riminds me of my old days playing the sax. Thanks for posting americanisraelite.
