It's funny though this originally was a gift to Egypt i think it was, but they turned it down so France gave it to us and we accepted her. None the less, it was a gift from France and she was built in pieces, then shipped over here, and we constructed her.

@anonymous5536 Bartholdi wanted to build a statue for Egypt at a time (1869-his own project) but after the war of 1870 against Prussia Laboulaye decided to offer a gift to the young usa and send Bartholdi to the US to choose a place for the gift. In 1874 Bartholdi was still working on the statue.

It was never meant to be in Egypt and they surely didn't turned it down...
