  • "'cosmic jerk' that reversed the universe" xD

  • @spikell70 and @urcorrect I think we know very well that we know absolutely nothing about dark energy. What it is, how it will change in the future, why it's pushing, (or pulling) the expansion of the universe, how it's gravity might affect the expansion if it stopped pushing... Einstein was an agnostic, which meant that he knew he didn't know, and everything to do with this subject is religious, not scientific at this point.

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe

  • You need to look at my channel. Proof of no expansion, no big bang, no dark energy. All based on dark matter having a index of refraction. When people look back on talks like this they will have a laugh.

  • ALEX FILLIPENKO!!!

  • 3:40 I thought our Milky Way was established to be a spiral bar galaxy??

  • @XTSonic bar? thats not what i have heard, this is a picture that comes to mind when i picture our own.

  • yes this cocksuker retard has been hiding after his retard comments. what a faggot

  • retard there was no light in the universe until 380,000yrs after big bang . not few seconds after like this socialpromotiontips guy says what a retard

  • @mrlogicalman1 Oh, come on. I had a pretty good laugh when I read his comment. My favorite part was the electron collapsing into the nucleus and forming a "black hole atom".

  • It's not dark energy pushing the expansion of the universe, it's light. Particles pushed out by burning stars. We are still getting light from a few seconds after the big bang. Solar winds. When all of the light is sucked in by black holes, gravity will take over. Dark matter is cold matter, as heat gives off light. No heat, the electron collapses into the nucleus, and it becomes a black hole atom. I know how the universe will end, it will end in a big crunch, the same way it always has.

  • @SocialPromotionTips Are you hiding?

  • @SocialPromotionTips your brain went into a big crunch

  • This guy is brilliant, ,,,,,,anyone Lawrence Krauss respects is an authority on the subject.

27:18 The "take thousands of photographs (through the telescope) and examine them and simply look for arrows" comment is truly clever. Almost British humor.

  • "Knowing the difference can be a game-changer in life." I don't need a lesson on life. Try to be less didactic and philosophical.

  • I like the SUBJECT of this video very much, by the way. I've watched it several times, now. I just wish the speaker would work on his delivery.

  • "The" is pronounced "thee" before anything that sounds like a vowel and "thuh" before anything that sounds like a consonant. Sticking "thuh" before everything is not only wrong grammatically, but sounds absolutely awful.

  • @gsmonks The cat is big. The orange is fat. According to you, one of these sentences is grammatically wrong. Which one is it? Oh wait, it's impossible to tell because pronunciation is invisible and thus irrelevant when it comes to grammar. You are a evil, vile, and cruel boy, and I should shoot you in the face like a dog.

  • @gobipill Boy? I've been teaching grammar since long before you were born.

Pronunciation is part of grammar, as is diction.

Grammar is not only relevant, but critical when it comes to higher education.

Since you have no respect for the language, or for me it seems, I can only assume that you have no respect for education, either.

  • @gsmonks The dude in the video is 100% understandable. You know that, as well as I do. Hence, since you are so intent on hopping around on YouTube correcting people's grammar, why on Earth would you bother with this video, which, in the first place, is comprehensible and legitimate, when you could be spending your time correcting the hundred million other videos, that have terrible grammar, that actually need fixing? Bring your trollololing clown show to a place where it counts.

  • @gobipill There's no comma after "You know that".

Evidently, your grammatical education is somewhat lacking.

We can all stand a little improvement. If you don't believe that, well . . . then you've got something of a problem in your life that warrants fixing.

If you view education as a "trollololing clown show", then one can only imagine what the future holds for you.

  • @gsmonks I know exactly what you're doing. I'm not here to make you believe me. I know, better than most, how hard it is to stop a troll. Have an absolutely fantastic day. =D

  • @gobipill Ah, so anyone who tries to correct and/or educate is automatically a troll.

    I see.

Similarly, anyone who points out bad grammar and/or pronunciation is automatically branded a "grammar Nazi" these days.

People used to pride themselves on good diction and grammar. It's very disappointing to see how many young people have zero respect for these things.

You have something I didn't have, namely the Internet. You have access to information but don't use it wisely. How sad.

  • @gsmonks The main reason I commented in the first place was b/c this dude's grammar is more than good enough to understand. It might not be perfect, but neither, without a doubt, is yours. Further, there are tons of other videos on YouTube in desperate need of your "skills"; go there. I used to think grammar was important too, until I realized, "oh sht, dis is the internet lololol who am I kidding". I used to be just like you. Then I loosened up and took an arrow in the knee.

  • @gobipill As an educator, he has the responsibility to set an example. "Good enough to understand" doesn't cut it. You can jump up and down shouting, "Ugh! Ugh!" and point vigorously to indicate you want something, but as I say, "Good enough to understand" doesn't cut it.

The fact that this is the Internet is a poor excuse. Just because many people talk like louts doesn't mean you have to join in. Lots of people get drunk and piss in doorways, too.

  • @gsmonks 1. His grammar is coherent. Coherence, not perfection, is the point of speaking

    2. This is speaking, not writing. No one speaks with perfect grammar

    3. The pronunciation of words varies from accents and dialects

    4. There are tons of other videos to criticize

That's all I have to say, really. Also, I don't think you honestly believe that his speaking "doesn't cut it" for his students. You went from "'the' is pronounced wrong" to "his speaking is inadequate". That's ridiculous.

  • @gobipill No, the point of speaking is communication. As an educator he owes it to his students to set an example, especially considering that words are the means by which he imparts information.

This is not an example of "accents and dialects".

Videos come by number, not by weight.

"Other videos" are irrelevant to this particular example, just as are other speakers.

"Thuh" before a vowel is wrong, AND for teaching purposes is therefore inadequate. They are one and the same.

  • @gsmonks Whatever. I can't think up more to say, so here's a summary of all I've said. Take it however you like.

    1. His grammar is coherent. Coherence, not perfection, is the point of speaking

    2. This is speaking, not writing. No one speaks with perfect grammar

    3. The pronunciation of words varies from accents and dialects

    4. There are tons of other videos to criticize

  • @gobipill 1- No, the point of speaking is communication.

2- Lots of people speak using flawless grammar.

3- Pronunciation is not what we're talking about here. We're talking about a lazy, bad habit.

4- Citing that there are "other videos" is irrelevant, and is like saying in a court of law, "Other people have done far worse things than my client, so you should prosecute them instead."

5- You're making excuses, not arguments. Knowing the difference can be a game-changer in life.

  • @gsmonks You have got to be kidding me when you say lots of people speak using perfect grammar. I've never met anyone who speaks perfectly, especially since your definition of perfect grammar factors in the pronunciation of "the". Also, since "communication" is the point of grammar, will saying "the" correctly improve his communication? Does "the universe" instead of "the universe" communicate better, somehow? It doesn't make him more effective or more engaging, just more "perfect".

  • @gsmonks The only reason I've bothered to stick around so long is because I had the privilege of listening to this lecture, when I was at Cal. I can tell you honestly that Filippenko is already in the top 5% of Americans who even cares to speak with good grammar; saying that his presentation is "inadequate" because of this mistake (which I have never refuted as a mistake, even if I don't think it's a "grammatical" one) is ridiculous.

  • @gobipill I'll let you have the last word. Merry Christmas!

  • @gsmonks MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR =O =O =O =O

  • @gobipill You're an asshole.

  • @gsmonks Hey fag, you must've missed reading "Youtube Etiquette 101". Spamming is looked down upon. I had to go through three pages of you and your butt buddys inane chatter to find a comment left by someone else.

  • @1Novatrek lmfao.... butt buddies probably says it best, they dont know that they have more in common then they want to admit, unstoppable force meets immovable object.

  • @torymorton I love you so much right now :(

  • What a great video I have seen Alex Filippenko on many other videos. I love how excited he is when he speaks...Id love to have a job that makes me feel that way each day :)

  • @Enix2012 His enthusiasm is awesome.

  • amazing talk! thanks for putting this up...! i gave it a standing ovation from here... :) :)
