I don't hear any penny whistle, but the timbre of the fiddle in this recording almost sounds like Uilleann pipes. Not sure if thats due to the recording, or if it actually sounded like that. A fascinating recording!
Hello! I don't have the best of hearing either, but if there is I've never been able to pick it out. I agree, this recording is of very poor audio quality, the music just comes through. It's pretty cool though nonetheless. Thank you for your comment and for watching. If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out my channel. I have posted over 1000 old time country recordings mostly from the 20's and 30's. Have a nice evening, Brian
@BBYMRLCCOTN There's no penny whistle in this. A lot of those old recordings of fiddles ended up sounding like flutes almost (Gid Tanner's 1924 recordings often sound like this). It's just the way it turned out with the recording equipment used. His use of drone strings also kind of makes it sound like more than one instrument.
@bangwezl Besides the fiddle drone strings, you are also hearing the rumble of the motor that drove the original table in the recording studio. Even though this is an acoustic era recording, the motor is driven electrically and leaves sound on this 78 which you can hear winding down on the trail-out grooves. All this droning makes you hear the higher harmonics in an exaggerated way, so yes it can sound like a flute or whistle!
The drone string/mains hum seems to be around F.

@jaredwblack It's because he has his fiddle tuned to DDAD, which creates that "pipes" sound.

Is there a penny whistle in there? This is a good recording, but I'm so hard of hearing and there's so much static, I'm not sure...DW

My grand dad used to play this on his fiddle and it was my dad's favorite song. Thanks

It is my pleasure. Did he play any other songs? Thanks for watching, and I hope you have a great night, Brian
