Why they are many word that have the word "motor" in them, but I have never heard of motorcross. The word you are looking for here is motocross. You can not generalize that motorboats are called that because they have a "motor" in them.(as you would say) Have you ever heard of a steam engine? That mechanical invention in which converts steam into motion. Why is it not called a steam motor? Both words could be used,i am simply stating that "engine" would be a better word than "motor" as i suggested.
@MrGifted92 I appreciate your opinion but stating "better" simply because it appeals to you is also a generalization. You are certainly correct in your definitions of both words and I am not disputing that. What I am disputing is that in modern times the definitions of those words have gone by the wayside. Maybe due to our lazy nature. In todays world, especially in the automotive world, motor is highly accepted and often the preferred word.
@miltonautosales I must add that I have to admit that I have enjoyed this conversation with you and I am aware of your intelligence. I have been in the automotive industry for 20 years now and have to admit that the majority of people in the automotive industry say motor more often than engine,
@MrGifted92 Well sir your opinion is invalid! Why is motorcross not called enginecross. Motorboat,,,not engineboat. I guess when I just called VW and ordered a motor mount and it came packaged in a box that said motor mount we are all wrong except you!! I majored in advanced English in college so may I suggest that you choose a battle which you may have a chance to win? This is one you are sure to lose! GM=General Motors,,,hmmmmm! Ever hear of the Ford "Motor" Company?!
@MrGifted92 fyi: I do not need any grammar lessons!
