I wish I'd done band my senior year too.

But then again, I dropped out of school due to insanity, so Marching Band prolly wouldn't have been the best thing...

  • Lol, Alvaro deleted his comments. Dan is talking to himself...and it seems like it's getting pretty good...

  • lmao. so dan, have you been taking your medication lately lol?

  • I think dan leaves a lot of comments on this video lol

  • I've MET only one Dreyfoos graduate that goes towards a music career in general.

  • You know, Dan, though you may be talking to yourself, what you are saying is more true than anything I've heard come from anyone regarding music in today's society.

  • Sure it may not be up to standards but let's face it, Benny Goodman didn't play classical music. It's like asking Louis Armstrong to play the Hummel Concerto for trumpet, it ain't gonna happen...well. Who cares about the way it's suppose to be played as long as it sounds good? Technique is something that holds a lot of musicians back.

  • That depends on the genre of music really. If you're talking classical music, then sure, music schools and conservatories have brought out some very technically proficient players. But the generation has changed. For many, it's no longer about being a virtuoso on your instrument.

  • I simply supposed. Just show me that you know the meaning.

  • Did I say I have a problem with that school?

  • And as far as you not knowing your music in marching band, you just weren't doing your job as a musician. Knack marching band as much as you want, everyone who knows me knows that I didn't like doing it. But I still fulfilled my obligation, because I was doing it anyways. And last time I checked, there wasn't anything wrong with entertaining people, which is the purpose of marching band. So stop arguing and making yourself look like an ass.

  • I said state, not FBA. You wanted to go to Dreyfoos, which is all fine and dandy, but had you gone, you would have just realized that you were getting the same teaching at SHS, the only difference was the fact that Dreyfoos had auditions.

  • Santaluces also has a recording arts program which, you know, is a big part of MUSIC. I think that you are stuck in the old days of orthodox classical and jazz teaching when there is so much more to explore, and at Santaluces, they do explore the other realms of music.

  • The teaching at Santaluces is VERY good, and trust me, I've been around the block a few times to see what goes on at other places. Money doesn't grow on trees, and this project coordination goes much further than you of all people would know. There are reasons that they spend money on the things that they do.

  • The serious musicians at Santaluces know the true meaning of playing their instrument, something, I suppose, you have not yet discovered. Oh, and you must remember that Santaluces is still just a public school. There's only so much you can do in the public school system, Alvaro.

  • to tell you the truth, the new generation of band students at santaluces has changed alot since 2005. not as many people know the true meaning of playing their instrument anymore. sad, but true. but who knows, it could change.

  • Very true.

  • alvaro just shut up you're jealous lol. Since you left they brought in a second director, some of the staff has changed, there's a woodwind quarter choir thing going on.....Not to mention the multi-million dollar renovation to the music hall with the kick ass recording studio :D

  • But Alvarro....the program WAS successful. The jazz band got straight superiors at state 2 years in a row. And the wind ensemble was just as good. Your view of this marching band, and the wind ensemble is extremely warped. There were kids in the marching band that still didn't even know their music by the end of the season. And now you're just making up some crap to cover your ass.

  • some godly screamers in the program lol

  • Yeah, but see, you aren't a hobbyist, you're a professional. The people that get burned out are hobbyists.

  • You have to consider size and venue. A marching band has to have a lot of staff because of the things a marching band consists of; guard, visual effect, visual acuity, musical effect, musical acuity, etc. and in a band of this size, you can't have only one person running it, covering all aspects of a marching band. Nothing would get done.

  • And as for the other groups, you really couldn't be farther from the truth. Look at the amount of people that keep playing when they get out of Santaluces. Compare that, let's say, to West Boca. There's a huge difference because by the time that people get out of WBHS they are completely burned out of their instrument and no longer want to play.

  • This probably has to do with the fact that Mr. Rhodes focuses more on the success of HIS group (i.e. the marching band) rather than the teaching and learning of his students. And I'm not trying to make any comparisons that would be condescending to either program. They are just run differently.

  • As for the energy that goes into the other groups; that comes from the students, not the staff. What you may have felt in an ensemble as a lack of energy, may have felt to someone else completely different. I know for a fact that more energy was put into the winter and spring seasons by both staff and students than in the fall. Especially the past two years.

  • unleveled coordination alvaro?

  • I was on the John I Leonard High School Marching Band 97-01 and Santaluces has come a long way because they never were this good,Congrats

  • i thought rogiven wasnt doin malejena

  • he lied, lol
