I'm starting to find out why the only good 3D Sonic games were Sonic Adventure, SA2, and Sonic Heroes: You got to play as more characters BESIDES Sonic. There was also MORE than 1 story to complete If you think about it, what would you rather have:Running and speed for the entire game, or the option to play as more than one character with his/her unique abilities and storyline?

SA2:6 characters

Sonic Heroes:4 teams of 3,making a total of 12

I think it's called delusion if you stick with a character no matter what. Sonic was at his prime in 1994, the games were indulging and fun, the physics and the mechanics made sense and weren't sticky and clumsy. The story got better and better. The suddenly they started making crap games like that RPG game, sonic the fighters, sonic r. Their attempt to a full 3d switch with SA was decent, but isn't even close to Sonic 3 and knuckles. SA was cheesy, awkward, and unstimulating

The new mario games aren't bad. But I still think a full 3D transition is possible, but it won't happen under the current leadership. Sonic Team has even admitted in an interview that they have basically given up on Sonic artistically and that the brand is simply a cash cow in which they have a quota to fulfill. They end up pumping out some horrible Sonic game every two years knowing that fanboys with their heads up their asses will still buy any game with Sonic on it no matter how shitty it is
