@SevereStormsMax9 Hi Max. There are several methods that can be used to create a timelapse. The traditional method is for the video camera to record a few frames at a set interval... like every 30 or 60 seconds. Most consumer camera don't have this option anymore. The other way (which is how I created this clip) is to record the video at normal speed, then use editing software to speed up the playback rate.
Hi Dylan. A squall line is a linear complex of numerous strong to severe thunderstorms that typically preceeds a frontal passage. They frequently produce very heavy rainfall, hail, strong straight line winds and intense lightning. They can also produce embedded tornadoes and waterspouts.
Hey Mike, in West Palm Beach, I recorded winds at a maxium of 7.5 to 15 m/s, even though there was a tornado warning. How frequent were the lightning strikes? I mean in flashes per sq. km per 4 hours.
@mainchow10 At my location we received peak winds around 40 mph (18 m/s) during this event... though the Fowey Rocks C-MAN station recorded a peak gust of 77 mph (34 m/s). As for lightning, I personally witnessed four intense CGs within a relatively close radius from my vantage point... but, since I was at work and could only check on the conditions outside intermittently, there could have been more.
@quantumflux432 Unfortunately I was shooting out of a window in a high-rise commercial building, and when the door was opened to the office I was in, glare from the ceiling lights reflected off the inside of the window and obscured the view. I had to shift the angle of the camera to minimize the effect.
@quantumflux432 We had several close lightning strikes during the squall passage at my location, but it sounds like you're describing power flashes from transformer explosions or arcing? While those are pretty frequent during high-wind events, I didn't see any at my location with this storm. They could easily have occurred in other locations though.
@vmax135 Look at the video I posted, this was in the morning at Napa Woods way in Naples so thats why its dark. The lightning flashes were violet (maybe from pollution) throughout the storm and there was thunder which rattled the hand held camera on the window sill after the flashes, you can see it at the beginning of the video.
@quantumflux432 Those are some awesome clips! Looks like you got quite a bit of wind out of the storm's passage. It's hard to say why the lightning might have had a particular tint at your location. At my location there didn't appear to be any strange colorations. In some cases I have witnessed cloud to cloud lightning that has had a distinct blueish tinge, but that's usually when it's diffused through quite a bit of convection... perhaps something similar happened with what you saw?
Nice Timelapse Mike. I got cought in this Mother while driving in NorthMiami. The sky turned black, the wind picked up and then the rain started falling like pennies from heaven. Had been tracking this system from the eastern Gulf of Mexico earlier that morning on radar and it remained impressive during its entire treck across the state.
Thanks, Steve!!! Yeah, I archived all the Level2 scans as this thing crossed South Florida... definitely impressive! I was really surprised how dark it got for awhile... it was really ominous as it was approaching. And there was one cell in particular over Florida Bay that had a decent rotational couplet on it before it merged with the overall line... pretty crazy.
Awesome video Mike!! at school that day i heard a little bit of howling through the windows because a small part of one of the windows was open a little bit so when the winds swept under through there it sounded pretty cool.
Cool. I didnt catch this until now

Cool how the clouds moved towards the squall then later the clouds with the squall moved right over head getting darker and darker.

Were the lightning flashes violet in Maimi?
