@F4v0ur No. There is no animal that has been discovered that is bigger than a fully grown 100 foot Adult. In the Sea or Land. This is the biggest animal ever, and we're lucky that it is still alive today, so we can coexist with this amazing animal. Let's hope we can keep this species alive and that they can thrive again.
@F4v0ur 2 minutes of googling says that, yes, it is the largest animal that ever lived according to all scientific records. It outclasses all known dinosaurs, land animals, and sea animals to ever have lived. The only way to find a larger living thing is in the fungi world where the rules are different and many huge colonies can be considered one organism.
The Blue Whale is, was, and probably always will be the biggest sentient moving thing on earth, until its inevitable extinction.
@EricRmd A lot smaller than a blue. There's a chart somewhere in the internets that compares the largest animals in the ocean, including extinct ones.

@cgkitti It could be argued that everything has to do with religion, yes? If that particular religion explains its respective origins of the universe, then it concerns whales.
@Mangoyle Sure, anything could have to do with religion. But you don't see people making a big religious to-do about a skin care video. Collagen is awesome and I'm glad I have it, but I wouldn't praise any high being for it when I watch some dermatology video. I am not going through all the comments to find the root of the discussion, but I'm sure it was one person praised a god for blue whales and creating them and then someone else challenged it.
@Mangoyle And don't worry, I am not trying to slam anyone's religion, but more so the opposite. Just wish people could be more accepting of other people's viewpoints instead of downplaying the awesomeness of the video with uncalled for arguments.

i will agree there is some gender discrimination in certain fields.
Women in our military, politics, face real barriers! But in research, even if there aren't many women, i don't see the BARRIERS preventing it.
We had the WORLDS FIRST FEMALE PRIMEMINSTER back in 1960, and repeated it in 2000, way before any western country. So PLEASE stop exaggerating about the matter.
@18sacky Oops. Mohammed seems to have forgotten to put the disclaimer "This is a work of fiction. Any characters, events or purported truths therein, are purely works of the author's imagination." on his acclaimed book.
@ChowMeinChowdown Why are you being so offensive? Just because you don't practice a religion doesn't mean you insult it and it's followers. And besides Muhammad didn't write the Qur'an any more than Jesus Christ wrote the New Testament.
@Mangoyle I'm about as offensive as you are nosy and 18sacky is audacious in his claims. Just because you practice a religion doesn't mean you are entitled to attribute the world as creation of your God, especially not on a secular video like this. Btw I hope u were joking about the Jesus Christ comment.
@ChowMeinChowdown So not very offensive then? I'm not nosy but 18Sacky is one of my best friends in real life so I'm gonna back him up. And if I'm not entitled to attribute the universes' creation to God, who is? And what's the joke with the Jesus Christ comment? He *didn't* write the New Testament.
@Mangoyle Well I've said it before & I'll say it again. I have no issues with people practising their religion. The problem arises when my secular rights are breached when someone makes such exclusionary unfounded statements on this decidely nonreligious whale video. Sacky is entitled to view the world as part of his religion, but so am I & others entitled to view it as part of ours. Take care not to develop overbearing notions about the world though, it may lead to foolish acts (eg. terrorism).
@ChowMeinChowdown For fucks sake man. 18Sacky wasn't breaching your's, or any other worthless human's, rights. He was simply a) thanking God for Blue Whales and b) making a fucking comment on the Internet. He wasn't robbing banks, murdering old ladies or shoveling people into gas chambers. He was making a fucking comment. Why do you view this on par with ethnic cleansing, mass rape and other such crimes against humanity? If you don't agree, just fuck off and leave him to it.
@Mangoyle I never felt the way you put me out to be. Honestly, I don't know what part of my comment you don't understand. Sacky was doing MORE than thanking God, he was proclaiming everything belongs to HIS God, with, "All things come from Allah", and that is what gets my goat. Free speech rights, but you don't just go around making stupid claims; if you get shit from others, it's because you put yourself in that position.
@ChowMeinChowdown You are missing my point. You accused me of being nosy, yet you launch a torrade against a guy who wasn't hurting anyone, wasn't saying "all things belong to God, therefore everyone who isn't a Muslim should die." Regardless of what you think, you don't go around attacking innocent people proclaiming thanks to God for Blue Whales. You don't have to "give shit to others." That's like massacring a town, then saying that they shouldn't have been on Earth and so able to be killed.
@Mangoyle Forget the nosy bit, maybe u were only trying to help a friend, but I'd prefer if he'd done the correspondence himself.
Anyways, I guess our definition of secularism differs. I'm not exactly 'hurt' per se, but I'm offended. What by? By his claims. U see, I'm not attacking him either, I'm challenging his notion that his God was the responsible one with a bit of tongue-in-cheek-iness. I just don't see why religion gets to enjoy special immunity. And that's a false analogy from u btw.
@ChowMeinChowdown What i said was just me expressing my beliefs...it didn't affect anyone with or without a religeon because it was just a comment and wasn't questioning anything else...religeon is a way of life...people go through life in different ways....so that means anything can be a "special immunity"
You forgot your actions carry consequences. In this case, a simple act of your expressing your beliefs has led to the undermining of someone else's (you don't have to question to offend). You may not feel like you have done anything, but that's because you haven't been sensitive enough to others. In a perfectly secular situation in cyberspace, anyone with religious beliefs should keep them to themselves.
@ChowMeinChowdown Also, 18Sacky is entitled, by his human rights as set out by the United Nations Organisation, to practice his religion and view the world as part of his religion.
@ChowMeinChowdown Listen mate i dont want to start a youtube fight or anything...whether you practice a religeon or not has nothing to do with me....but Mangoyle is right....you're being offensive and i'm entitled to say what i believe and so is Mangoyle...so QUIT YO JIBBA JABBAH! ....Me saying "the blue whale is a magnificent creature sent from Allah" (or wateva)...how is that gonna affect you....If Mangoyle wanted to say what he believes...he can....ill just respect his beliefs
@18sacky Free speech goes both ways my friend. Your entitled, and so am I. That was exactly the point I was trying to make to Mangoyle - Religion enjoys too much of an immunity in modern society. Anything that is not set in stone (in fact nothing is), can and should be challenged. We've done the same for every other topic, from "hottest girls" to historical achievements, from morality to politics.
Imagine I were as staunch a Christian as u are a Muslim. Your statement undermines my belief.
@ChowMeinChowdown Now you do realise Islam is very similar to Christianity. I know this because I am a Christian who respects other religion's beliefs, and take the time to know about other religions. If you know your history then you will know that Islam is a splinter of Christianity, just as Christianity is a splinter of Judaism. And I still don't get what you mean by immunity. From what? Persecution? Protection? Politics? What, man?
@Mangoyle Similarities between Islam & Christianity can be argued both ways, but that is not the point here. Fine, you happen to be a liberal Christian, more power to you, but I can easily find a handful of theists, from any religion, who could possibly take very much offence to that statement. I could easily imagine a war of words, threats or even actual physical action being taken. Yes, I feel society on a global scale gives in too much to religion. And yes, I'm indeed an atheist.
@18sacky There are countless other ways apart from having someone post comments on a wildlife video. There is a time and place for everything. Way to turn my accusation on its head! Now I'm the sensitive one.
@ChowMeinChowdown Please ignore my comrade until he has sorted himself out. He doesn't understand what he is doing. His comments are childish and they miss the true intelligence of this great individual.
@ChowMeinChowdown I am not a "liberal" Christian. I am a true Christian, an accepting Christian. If that makes me "liberal", so be it. And to what statement do these people take offence to? Because pretty much all religions teach peace, love and acceptance.
So, if you're an atheist, do you believe the universe was created randomly?
@Mangoyle Unfortunately the downside of most religions (at least the monotheistic ones) is the exclusion of other deities, you know, like in the "We're all atheists. I just go one God further" sense. It would be beneficial to humanity if every theist could see the world in your view, that is, tolerant of other faiths, but I'm afraid it's not realistic. Bible inerrantists' fundamental view that only their God is real predisposes them to confront conflicting theories. Could u first define random?
Of course it should be noted that my God is the Muslim God, the Jewish God, the Sikh God and possibly the Catholic God (though they are more inclined to devil worship than worshiping the Lord). Welcome to the wonderful world of Abrahamic religions.
And by random I mean no one created the universe, no one at least set the ball in motion.
@Mangoyle I assume "no one" refers to any anthropomorphic entity. Indeed by that definition, I have to agree with the idea that the universe arose randomly.
@ChowMeinChowdown God isn't an anthropomorphic entity. He isn't a talking rabbit. He is Alpha and Omega; beginning and end; all that is, has been or will be. He isn't a character is a Disney cartoon.
So, to business. If no being created the universe, then how did such perfect designs come around. The design of nature, animals and the laws of physics are so intricate and amazing that they couldn't possibly happen randomly.
I assume you're acquainted with the watchmaker analogy?
@Mangoyle The term rightly encompasses Abrahamic gods like Allah. I'm not sure where you get your info from but as I see it, He really doesn't mind giving off the impression of anthropomorphism (as does Yahweh). For me the answer is obvious - they are man-made concepts.
@Mangoyle It is easy for us, biologically predisposed to teleology, to assume and look for patterns of design and intentionality in nature. God is a misnomer. Truly, invoking God to explain the intricacies and mysteries of the universe presents greater questions about His origin. Hence, God cannot qualify even as a remotely viable hypothesis.
@ChowMeinChowdown Uhm, I'm gonna take a break from this for a while to concentrate on my religious studies. I hereby hand over leadership of this organisation to Saqib, who will carry out my duties until I return. Goodbye for now, brother.
And just so you know, I don't hate you or wish any bad will upon you. You are entitled to your opinion.
WHY DO WE KNOW SO LITTLE!? I understand it's really dangerous because of their size and speed but i'm running outta blue whale videos to watch! I wish there was more underwater footage! I honestly can't get a sense of their size unless i really see one it's my dream to swim with one
am a srilankan and there is no gender discrimination in sri lanka she totally made that up !! we even had a lady president we respect all genders and cultures anywho she is doing an awesome job with her research
@elzdmaster common gouys, What she is saying is true. As a sri lankan I can imagine she must have faced some difficulties at first because she is a women. Its pointless s to say that we had female leaders so we are a gender equal society. Even countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and India had female leaders .
Lovely program and thank you Australia and Channel 7.. Feel very good about Sri Lanka and sincerely hope that the life styles of the animals will not be hindered due to excessive tourism.. However, I was a little disappointed of Asha's comment concerning the females not getting significant exposure in this "part of the world".. Guess Sri Lanka, for a long time, did not belong to the part of the world that she is referring to.. Especially, when this country had been under female leaders as well.
It was also in 1985 that National Geographic magazine published a 68rpm vinyl record containing the blue whale songs, recorded off the coastal line of Sri Lanka by two American scientists who worked with NARA for almost a year. While most of these recordings took place off Trincomalee in the north-east, which was subsequently cut off by the war for scientific research, Mirissa in the south continued to be monitored by Anouk and others and whale watching tours began at the height of the war.

these so called expat of sri lanka dnt knw anything about sri lanka, sri lanka has equal place for women, these people fled the country wen the war was going on and now wen the poor has scarified and ended the war they come back to make thier play ground, why study them leave them alone u dnt need to collect thier poop to make sure they live. go back asha to where ever u came from, we must give a sri lanka a chance not a fake sri lankan expat
Wow this is amazing.and we all must thank the lady for her brilliant discovery.but I was really disappointed about her comment about freedom of women in south Asian region.as Sri Lankans we should be proud for the freedom of women in our country comparing to the countries around us.I wish if she had seen it
@amilagmail ur ryt these people just wnt these to their personal advantage , wen there ws the war these people ddnt come they waited till the people of the country gave blood to save the country.now these cowards are coming
please... Responsible people open your blind greedy eyes & try and do protect those creatures living in our own Water.....Thanks Asha....i think that Asha herself happy to be a srilankan....she can say Great blue whales paradise is my country..Amazingggg
I appreciate the contribution you have made. With due respect Asha madam, The first women president and prime minister is from our country. Maybe you haven't lived in Sri Lanka long enough. Please dont be boastful !! Usually our women is humble !
WOW!! Incredible clips of the magnificent Blue Whales in our very own waters!! And to think we were not aware of these gorgeous creatures at our very doorstep. Thank you Asha and the photographer for these brilliant clips.....
However, I would like to talk about what Asha mentioned in the video. Women in Sri Lanka are so privileged compared to many countries. For example; in India people still kill baby girls, harass women for dowry (and yes they still have that system).
Trust me... Sri Lanka is heaven compared to many countries.
@kku81 that's true for most fields in SL but it's not easy being a female scientist in the country, almost all the areas are dominated by men. I know how it works coz i'm in the field.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.. Im so asshamed at the moment of being a Sri Lankan who does not know of this.. This is just magnificent.. thank you so much and Im so glad that people like Asha exists..
Beautiful blues... I hope the the government there in Sri Lanka jumps all over it, fines the people that don't respect the whales' space & moves the shipping lanes outside of the feeding grounds. As for women marine biologist? We've had women marine biologists, like me, world-wide for many decades! BTW, whales hate boats motors & bubbles from SCUBA tanks & almost always dive when they hear these sounds... I doubt that "bump" to the boat was accidental... more than likely playful. Awesome!
and then thee's another thing that doesn't make sense. They say that the whales were protected by the war and that it wasn't safe to study them during it, and yet the whales are in the South of SL, not the North. Unless Im very much mistaken, there was no "war" anywhere in Southern Sri Lanka. So either the report is wrong or someone doesn't know squat about SL :P
Ok, not to put a political twist to this, but that remark "women aren't in the forefront of things" is just retarded. First woman prime minister in the world, and a woman president who was probably the second most powerful president SL's ever had, and she says this? weird O.o
That said, this is just an amazing thing to find. Who knew these fellas were anywhere near SL? :) Instead of doing the BS they're doing atm, the govt. should seriously get tough on anyone who even thinks of hunting them.
@HighLordBlaze , Being a Sri lankan women who had always struggle to get my point across to people in SL, I have to agree with her. We may have had the first women president, but our attitude towards women is far from progressive. Can name hundreds of incidences where being an educated women with an opinion was frowned upon. There is no doubt that it is improving, but by no means are we even close to the standards in western countries, who are not perfect themselves in that context.
Yeah.... they have to be really strict about protecting them from extinction. Specially on those small scale boat guys! who have no idea about this creature but to make use of it!. They have to warn them about this specifically..... and they have to do it from now.
not really anyways its good i just commented may be next time she wil do it better , she shndt get so excited when she talks .. watch more animal planet :)
She said that she's on a part of the world where women aren't forefront of things.. Well she's a marine biologist in WA but she doesn't know anything about Sri Lanka and its culture.. That comment might be true about India & Pakistan but not in Sri Lanka.. Both world first female prime minister & president were from Sri Lanka..According to The Global Gender Gap Index 2010 rankings Sri Lanka was ranked no.16 and Australia was no.23 below Sri Lanka..
@LakrisiK I agree with her! Being a Sri lankan woman who had always struggle to get my point across to people in SL, I have to agree. We may have had the first woman president, but our attitude towards women is far from progressive. Can name hundreds of incidences where being an educated woman with an opinion was frowned upon. @KTM316282 i refer you to this comment by kku81: "Women in Sri Lanka are so privileged compared to many countries. For example; in India people still kill baby girls, harass women for dowry (and yes they still have that system).
Trust me... Sri Lanka is heaven compared to many countries."
@LakrisiK Oh yes... India is really bad. They kill baby girls and harass women for dowries. I lived in India for almost two years and I had the worst experience. Sri Lanka is heaven compared to all countries in the subcontinent

Mangoyle 8 months ago
@Mangoyle Well I've said it before & I'll say it again. I have no issues with people practising their religion. The problem arises when my secular rights are breached when someone makes such exclusionary unfounded statements on this decidely nonreligious whale video. Sacky is entitled to view the world as part of his religion, but so am I & others entitled to view it as part of ours. Take care not to develop overbearing notions about the world though, it may lead to foolish acts (eg. terrorism).
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown For fucks sake man. 18Sacky wasn't breaching your's, or any other worthless human's, rights. He was simply a) thanking God for Blue Whales and b) making a fucking comment on the Internet. He wasn't robbing banks, murdering old ladies or shoveling people into gas chambers. He was making a fucking comment. Why do you view this on par with ethnic cleansing, mass rape and other such crimes against humanity? If you don't agree, just fuck off and leave him to it.
Mangoyle 8 months ago
@Mangoyle I never felt the way you put me out to be. Honestly, I don't know what part of my comment you don't understand. Sacky was doing MORE than thanking God, he was proclaiming everything belongs to HIS God, with, "All things come from Allah", and that is what gets my goat. Free speech rights, but you don't just go around making stupid claims; if you get shit from others, it's because you put yourself in that position.
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown You are missing my point. You accused me of being nosy, yet you launch a torrade against a guy who wasn't hurting anyone, wasn't saying "all things belong to God, therefore everyone who isn't a Muslim should die." Regardless of what you think, you don't go around attacking innocent people proclaiming thanks to God for Blue Whales. You don't have to "give shit to others." That's like massacring a town, then saying that they shouldn't have been on Earth and so able to be killed.
Mangoyle 8 months ago
@Mangoyle Forget the nosy bit, maybe u were only trying to help a friend, but I'd prefer if he'd done the correspondence himself.
Anyways, I guess our definition of secularism differs. I'm not exactly 'hurt' per se, but I'm offended. What by? By his claims. U see, I'm not attacking him either, I'm challenging his notion that his God was the responsible one with a bit of tongue-in-cheek-iness. I just don't see why religion gets to enjoy special immunity. And that's a false analogy from u btw.
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown False Analogy is the name of my band.
Special immunity in what exactly? People's hearts?
Mangoyle 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown What i said was just me expressing my beliefs...it didn't affect anyone with or without a religeon because it was just a comment and wasn't questioning anything else...religeon is a way of life...people go through life in different ways....so that means anything can be a "special immunity"
18sacky 8 months ago
@18sacky I don't follow your argument.
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@Mangoyle thanks mate
18sacky 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Also, 18Sacky is entitled, by his human rights as set out by the United Nations Organisation, to practice his religion and view the world as part of his religion.
Mangoyle 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Listen mate i dont want to start a youtube fight or anything...whether you practice a religeon or not has nothing to do with me....but Mangoyle is right....you're being offensive and i'm entitled to say what i believe and so is Mangoyle...so QUIT YO JIBBA JABBAH! ....Me saying "the blue whale is a magnificent creature sent from Allah" (or wateva)...how is that gonna affect you....If Mangoyle wanted to say what he believes...he can....ill just respect his beliefs
18sacky 8 months ago
@18sacky Free speech goes both ways my friend. Your entitled, and so am I. That was exactly the point I was trying to make to Mangoyle - Religion enjoys too much of an immunity in modern society. Anything that is not set in stone (in fact nothing is), can and should be challenged. We've done the same for every other topic, from "hottest girls" to historical achievements, from morality to politics.
Imagine I were as staunch a Christian as u are a Muslim. Your statement undermines my belief.
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Now you do realise Islam is very similar to Christianity. I know this because I am a Christian who respects other religion's beliefs, and take the time to know about other religions. If you know your history then you will know that Islam is a splinter of Christianity, just as Christianity is a splinter of Judaism. And I still don't get what you mean by immunity. From what? Persecution? Protection? Politics? What, man?
Also, are you an atheist?
Mangoyle 8 months ago
@Mangoyle Similarities between Islam & Christianity can be argued both ways, but that is not the point here. Fine, you happen to be a liberal Christian, more power to you, but I can easily find a handful of theists, from any religion, who could possibly take very much offence to that statement. I could easily imagine a war of words, threats or even actual physical action being taken. Yes, I feel society on a global scale gives in too much to religion. And yes, I'm indeed an atheist.
ChowMeinChowdown 8 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Well you are obviously way TOOOOOO sensitive!....if everyone kept religeon to themselves how can it spread
18sacky 8 months ago
@18sacky Indeed, one of the key points of religion is conversion.
Mangoyle 7 months ago
@Mangoyle However, I suspect that our raging friend here would prefer it if there was no religion at all.

@Mangoyle He has no argument
18sacky 7 months ago
@18sacky There are countless other ways apart from having someone post comments on a wildlife video. There is a time and place for everything. Way to turn my accusation on its head! Now I'm the sensitive one.
ChowMeinChowdown 7 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Please ignore my comrade until he has sorted himself out. He doesn't understand what he is doing. His comments are childish and they miss the true intelligence of this great individual.
Mangoyle 7 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown I am not a "liberal" Christian. I am a true Christian, an accepting Christian. If that makes me "liberal", so be it. And to what statement do these people take offence to? Because pretty much all religions teach peace, love and acceptance.
So, if you're an atheist, do you believe the universe was created randomly?
Mangoyle 7 months ago
@Mangoyle Unfortunately the downside of most religions (at least the monotheistic ones) is the exclusion of other deities, you know, like in the "We're all atheists. I just go one God further" sense. It would be beneficial to humanity if every theist could see the world in your view, that is, tolerant of other faiths, but I'm afraid it's not realistic. Bible inerrantists' fundamental view that only their God is real predisposes them to confront conflicting theories. Could u first define random?
ChowMeinChowdown 7 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Good to see you back. Maybe.
Mangoyle 7 months ago
@Mangoyle I assume "no one" refers to any anthropomorphic entity. Indeed by that definition, I have to agree with the idea that the universe arose randomly.
ChowMeinChowdown 7 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown God isn't an anthropomorphic entity. He isn't a talking rabbit. He is Alpha and Omega; beginning and end; all that is, has been or will be. He isn't a character is a Disney cartoon.
So, to business. If no being created the universe, then how did such perfect designs come around. The design of nature, animals and the laws of physics are so intricate and amazing that they couldn't possibly happen randomly.
I assume you're acquainted with the watchmaker analogy?
Mangoyle 7 months ago
@Mangoyle The term rightly encompasses Abrahamic gods like Allah. I'm not sure where you get your info from but as I see it, He really doesn't mind giving off the impression of anthropomorphism (as does Yahweh). For me the answer is obvious - they are man-made concepts.
ChowMeinChowdown 7 months ago
@Mangoyle It is easy for us, biologically predisposed to teleology, to assume and look for patterns of design and intentionality in nature. God is a misnomer. Truly, invoking God to explain the intricacies and mysteries of the universe presents greater questions about His origin. Hence, God cannot qualify even as a remotely viable hypothesis.
ChowMeinChowdown 7 months ago
@ChowMeinChowdown Uhm, I'm gonna take a break from this for a while to concentrate on my religious studies. I hereby hand over leadership of this organisation to Saqib, who will carry out my duties until I return. Goodbye for now, brother.
And just so you know, I don't hate you or wish any bad will upon you. You are entitled to your opinion.

This is great...

Awesome!
dreamsurfer63 10 months ago
and then thee's another thing that doesn't make sense.

HighLordBlaze 10 months ago 3
@HighLordBlaze , Being a Sri lankan women who had always struggle to get my point across to people in SL, I have to agree with her. We may have had the first women president, but our attitude towards women is far from progressive. Can name hundreds of incidences where being an educated women with an opinion was frowned upon. There is no doubt that it is improving, but by no means are we even close to the standards in western countries, who are not perfect themselves in that context.
KTM316282 10 months ago
Yeah.... they have to be really strict about protecting them from extinction. Specially on those small scale boat guys! who have no idea about this creature but to make use of it!. They have to warn them about this specifically..... and they have to do it from now.
