  • Very nice, very nice indeed!! Keep up the great work.

  • damn, kid got skillz :)

  • very nice sound... but the song is very slow and easy. Bring it up a level and test your limits

  • Nooooot exactly that kind of song. MBrecker (RIP) doesn't even do anything expensive on this.. And certainly not miles...

    I like your interpretation Gabe.

  • quality music is quality music. a lot of people actually consider ballads harder since it can expose flaws and sloppiness hidden in fast tunes

  • slow and easy shows your talent if you can play it beautifully like gabe does

  • This cat has a nice sound . Keep the good work.

  • coool ¡¡

  • Nice playing

  • gabe, i wanted to make you my bff at jazz camp. lol

  • Gabe Medd is like 18 or 19 years old now!

  • are you playing your high d and above?

  • is that a monnette? ive always wanted one but there just so expensive!

  • You have a really great feel and that quality is very unique amongst people your age. It's clear you have done a lot of listening which is great. Also I like your sound. At times you sound a little choked, and I think some work on fundamentals would make it easier for you to express yourself musically, and could improve your technique as well. Great job though, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

  • blared a bit at 3:31

  • Great job! you got some chops man. keep it up! I love the feel of that solo section. if I had one suggestion...you gotta kick that 3rd valve slide out on those low D's man...they are noticeably sharp. Great solo...cool looking horn too man.

  • Great sound GMedd (and a great looking trumpet - very understated and cool).

  • Do yo thing kid! Extrodianry sound quality for a kid! (prolly for anyone) Keep it up ur going places!

  • omfg nice 5 stars kid

  • How old is that kid? Damn!

  • Gabe, jazz jazz jazz. Call me and let's chill.

By the way, for all of you that want to know, Gabe plays on a mid 50's Mt. Vernon Bach.

  • how do you know

  • I went to school with him.

  • haha ok i have no idea why i asked you that sorry but sweet!

  • You have great sound

  • how long have you been playing

  • is that a monette?

  • Gabe,

You rock. Win state next year too. And keep the trumpets in order next year, when I'm gone. See ya at the concert tonight.

  • dude... you've got to be kidding me, this is awesome! Congratz! =) I ve really enjoyed it. Thanks! =)

  • nice

  • you kick the high tones a little too much for my taste

  • i agree

  • the guy is young, wadda tone. ignore the nit picking, give him five years and he'll be tellin us hows to do it truly.

  • I love it man...keep it up...your tone is really nice..

  • you have a really nice tone

  • oh yeah forgot to add is that a monette?

  • very good man ive been playing since 6th grade and im in tenth right now your good man nice jazz sound and stuff just dont play so harsh try to back of on the accented stuff and sorda flow and make it stronger instead of accented but otherwise nice sound man ..by the way im in tenth grade and made 3rd chair for mississippi lions band (thats really good..) so yeah well hope to see you in the business someday ill have some videos up soon so check me out jonathan richardson

  • if youy have to say (thats really good) kinda defeats the point

  • This is really good!

  • I've been playing trumpet for about 15 years now and I've never seen someone as young as you take it away in a ballet like that. The only advice that I can give you that would really help is to soften up your tone. Don't play as loud as you did in this number. If you quiet down your own personality and your own developed sound comes out, sometimes when we play loud our sound cuts out on us and the most important thing to a trumpet player is his own sound. Keep on goin'!!!

  • det's a verry good marsalis on music repley

  • oh cool. im an eighth grade trumpet player, second chair. you kick ass!

  • Wow- first time i've heard you play, I've heard about your playing though. You have such musical maturity for your age.

You have a good combo there too. I have a lot of respect for your pianist too. Look forward to hearing you in a gig soon.

  • gabe, im sooo lucky to get lessons from you!!!! thanks soo much!!! youre sooo amazing!!! how old were you when you did this? were you 16?

  • everytime i hear you play, i get more impressed!

    keep up the amazing playing!

  • quiero esa partituraaa :( me gusta mucho el tema alguien de ustedes la tieneee :(

  • wow, you have great sound dude. i'm a girl trumpet player- 7th grade, 1st chairl :D. keep it up, and make a cd!

  • bueno ... bonito tema

  • dude, beautiful song, nicely played, congrats. Soon, I hope, I'll be posting some myself. Btw, would you be so nice to share some of your partitures? =D

    Let me know if so.

    jazz around =]

  • thats baby makin music right there

  • You're phrasing is cool mate, despite what captain tactless says below. You're young and will learn a lot and no doubt become very good. Keep positive and remember that there will always be people like ScanlonJazz who focus on the negative. Ignore them. Good luck.

  • The only thing that's bugging me is that the ends of your nuts are almost always cut off with your tongue where you should be giving it an air cutoff. The tongue cutoffs makes al the phrasing you're doing go to crap because of its sharpness. Otherwise, I hope you did well with your auditions, because you are obviously a strong player.

  • Nice dude, that was awesome!

  • i wish i had your tone.

ughh. i should have never started playing trombone.

    eh. well it's all good.

    mm nice playing.

    nice playing d00d.

  • I play trumpet too... how old are you there? im 15 and im no where near as good as you oh well... i can hope :)

  • clifford brown is god!! saying that, good job bro.

  • You are quite the trumpet player; keep it up man.

  • i play a trumpet, thats nice, for his age especially! Great Job!

  • wow. very good. i enjoyed that.

  • very nice! very good tone and fluctuations

  • Oh man.. I love your tone in this.. It sounds so nice and calming to me. Really well done. :)

  • great job gabe!! Very expressive thanks for sharing this song with us.I will listen to the Rodgers and Hart tune next one of my favorites. " have You met miss jones" keep up the good work love you're sound.

  • i play trumpet and i have to say your great. you have a great tone and everything

  • Fantastic musician. Good style. Hastyberford..your right, now days it is all about that dumb stuff. I play trumpet myself, good job man

  • perfect jazz ballad style and sound man...very musical...well done

  • Great playing. Too bad no one listens to trumpet music anymore. Now it's all about the bling bling pop a cap in yo ass go killa cop rap-crap. :(

  • Great tone. Don't worry about the haters. That is not an easy song to play!!!

  • I liked your soloing by the way, try to mix up the ideas a little, very nice very nice

  • Dont you just love the comment arguments? I find them quite entertaining, because its always one person that just doesn't understand a point someone else is making, and refuses to do so continuously. Good stuff, good stuff

  • very nice i like. i just wish i kept playing the trumpet after high school(played for 6 years). anyway great job imo.

  • whumbyrd, thats a damn fair point, tone and control in a piece like this is just as difficult to master as squeeling about up top, especially whn you're all exposed like this. The man done good!

  • WELL DONE !

what type of trumpet is that???

  • beautiful playing

I just started playing trumpet hoping to be a good jazz player some day, so this vid is very inspiring

    keep it up

  • what kind of trumpet are you using?

  • What's with you guys and range? This kid does more in two octaves than Maynard Ferguson does in four. And he has better command of his pitch.

  • What are you talking about? I can't believe you have the audacity to even fucking compare this kid to Maynard. Sure, he's alright, I guess, but Maynard is probably this kid's wet dream. Shut up.

  • More like wet fart. Maynard was a circus act whose career highlight was playing the Rocky theme tune up the octave. This kid has more musicality in his little finger than that one trick pony.

  • So....Stan Kenton's big band, and The Birdland Dream Band were comprised primarily of 'circus acts', or was Maynard the only one? If he had as little musicality as you say, I don't think he would've been broadcasted on Canadian radio, and proclaimed a child prodigy at the age of 13. Do a little research, next time before you make yourself look like an ass. And like I said, this kid is pretty good, but he's no prodigy.

  • Yes, a circus act. There's no doubting his technical ability to play high notes loudly and out of tune. Wow, great. Now, what more did he have to offer? Will he go down in the annals of jazz history for innovation and musical ingenuity. Certainly not. Outside of the trumpet jock world he is remembered for one thing and one thing only: slaughtering the Rocky theme tune.

  • Yeah, I'm done arguing with someone who has no appreciation for the elder musicians of jazz. To the people that jazz trumpet actually concerns, Maynard was a bit more than a circus act. He was a great performer, and I've even heard him play solos on records in the lower register. Imagine that! You don't even sound like a musician to me, so I have no idea why any of this concerns you.

  • Of all jazz giants you could have brought up in reference to Gabe's playing - Miles, Clifford, Hubbard, Diz - you predictably bring up the king of the 70s TV theme tune, Ferguson, as someone he should imitate. I think most musicians here would agree, that's pretty conclusive evidence that you lack even a modicum of musical intelligence.

  • Didn't bring him up, bud, atpal did. I was simply stating that it's musical blasphemy to say a kid is better than someone who's whole life was dedicated to music. Also, I'd watch who you're talking to. I started studying music at Western Illinois University at the age of 16. Also, if I'd bring up anyone for gabe to emulate, it'd be Jon Faddis, or Dizzy, since their style of playing is so alike, and Gabe's weak points are range and accuracy.

  • He doesn't NEED to work on anything and he certainly doesn't need some cheeto-chomping fire-starting hill billy telling him so. Who cares how high he plays - I'm unaware of any rules stating you have to imitate a squeaking balloon to qualify as a musician. If you've got something to say, that's all you need. And he's got plenty to say.

  • Quit putting words in my mouth, I never said Gabe needed to work on anything. I was pointing out his weak areas...some people know it as constructive criticism. Others have their heads too far up their asses to realize that it's constructive, and just take it as criticism. You're obviously as stubborn as I am, and this is pathetic so I'll end it now. Gabe: if you're as young as you look, you're well on your way. Good luck.

  • We await the uploading of your videos so we may compare, contrast and critique. For someone with such a high opinion of himself, I can barely imagine what musical heights you must have achieved.

  • Well, I would have videos up now, but I don't know how to convert them to the right kind of file. I'm computer-retarded, and no one has rushed me, up utnil this point. I'm positive you'd be suprised though. Also, I'm not quite as old as my profile says. I don't remember why I made it that old...It's off by about 20 years. I'll send you a video when I figure it out.

  • Retarded and 20 years out, you say? That explains a lot.

  • On a different computer, that's the reason for the name change.

  • how old are you?

  • I'd like to hear more range... It gets a little too similar, haha. Very gorgeous jazzy sound, but watch the ends of some of your longer notes- they're going flat.

    Best of luck!

  • I'd like to see more range in your horn. get out of those 2 octaves and spread your ideas out further. great playing

  • You ever listen to Chet Baker? Get off the range shit man. High chops does not make a player.

  • i didn't say it made him. i just said i would like to see him expand his ideas further then the middle range of his horn. I wasn't bashing him, i was giving him constructive critisum. relax. I wasn't asking him to play screaming high, just expand his idea's. dont be so negative.

  • Gabe, I have been around Jazz for a long time and listening to you play makes me want to start over and do even more. Great Tone!! Great Feel!. You have the potential to be a really great player that will inspire other players, old and young, to do better and keep the only truely American Art form alive!. Good Job. I wish you well and look forward to hearing much more from you in the future.

  • hey dude what a tone u got wonderful

  • green?

  • green!

  • that was amazing! I actually cryed

  • Great work for any age, dude. I imagine this is what Chet sounded like at a young age. Very melodic and sounds like you are truly playing what you hear. I would encourage you to explore "outside" more. Altering some of the dominants would be a great start, and would add sooo much to your solos. Again, great work and most of all, it was enjoyable!! Seems like sometimes people forget to keep the audience in mind (myself included).

  • Sounds absolutly fantastic, great sound. How old are you? Scary stuff

  • yes beautiful full tone

  • Yeah man..... It's Nice!! but you did too many chorus of slow ballad... my oppinion... ending's great!!

  • You sound great. Whats your set up? Horn and mouthpiece.

  • the G-BABY pwns you!!!! yehaaaa great stuff man...keep the music rolling out to the global media centers!

  • Great sound, Gabe!Have you ever tried doing this number with a mute?Sounds beautifull!

I know this is an audition tape but you should improvise more.Keep up the good work!Best wishes!

  • high school? college?

  • EXCELLENT!! This gives me hope that there are other talented musicians that will carry jazz into the future. You sound GREAT!! Keep up the marvelous playing.

  • Sounds good, but where's the vibrato? Are we not supposed to you that. By the way I'm a jerk, but I need it. And you need honesty. Play with the melody more in the beginning. It get's old hearing the same notes over and over.

  • if you're the trumpet player, then you can't be forty-one years old (it says in your profile...) . Anyway, I don't know much about trumpet, but good job.

  • Cool!

  • Well done my friend, Bravo!

  • Nice job Gabe! How long have you been blowing? What kind of horn is that. Nice choice of material. I've got that by Clifford Brown or someone. Maybe Miles Davis, I will search it out.
