  • Logging in from Wellington, New Zealand. Yes, this was HUUUGE in New Zealand. I was fifteen when "Sheila" burst onto the NZ Charts and raced up to #1. It definitely rates in my Top Ten of all time. Tommy Roe was an extremely accomplished singer and song writer and had fourteen Top Fifty hits on the US Billboard charts. "Sweet Pea" and 'Dizzy" were his other #1 hits besides "Sheila". Great

  • @rorigiles - thanks for watching!

  • he sounds kinda like buddy holly. the drums sound like the drum solo in in peggy sue

  • i love this song because my name is sheila

  • A total Buddy knock off... but still brilliant!

  • what a beautiful song. this hits home , was in love with a sheila too.

  • Who is in that picture? is her name Sheila?

  • Was originally called Freida after a girl Tommy knew in Jr. High. The record company made him change it.

  • @508ItsLove record company was correct on that one.

  • Great song.

    I love it.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • A true blast from the past. I'll never forget it.

  • Love it <3

  • Does anybody know who the babae is?

  • I attended school with a girl named Sheila. This was in the1960's. Sheila was that cute girl whose bubbly personality just made guys really like her right away. She is a grandmother and a while back, I was able to find her and told her that everytime I heard Tommy's "Sheila" she came to mind and I'm a grandfather too! I posted the song on Facebook and dedicated it to her and she said that was the first time anyone ever dedicated a song to her. I said to her that I was glad to be the first.

  • the first record i ever brought, brings back great memories of going into the record booth to listern to the song before i brought it.

  • You can hear Buddy Holly Influence in this song

  • @TheBoomer1985 You sure can.

  • omg hilarious

  • ...Sonic 'Friggen' Alchemy!...

  • Remeber when this came out and the pop pundits at school said,"They 're looking for a replacement for Buddy Holly!" That was in the UK BTW...Great memories! Thanks

  • @tubemagpie - you are very welcome! Ron

  • This must have had Buddy Holly spinning in his grave till he was Dizzy!!

  • Great tune. Very Buddy like. He obviously influenced Tommy, which is fine. He influenced me as well.

  • Wow! I didn't know this song reached #1 on Billboard, but I just looked it up, and it sure did get to #1. I thought his 1969 hit, "Dizzy", also made it that high, and I verified that it did, too. Lots of girls named Sheila like this, but there are probably some who will scream if they hear it sung at them one more time!

  • @JamesA46

Yes, anyone can be accused of sounding like someone else. They all have influences. They shouldn't be faulted unless they plagiarize

  • This is not the original release of Sheila. The original was released on Judd Records. It is a bit more primitive and the guitar parts sound similar to those played by Ritchie Valens. Great song and so is this one. The Judd varsion is here on U-Tube somewhere. If you run across it please drop me the head line for it.

Thank you for the post. Love it.

  • @aceshigh130- you are very welcome! Ron

  • @aceshigh130 Yeah, I actually prefer the original version (More like Buddy Holly); but, this one was the "hit" version

  • @aceshigh130 The Judd version USED to be up on YT, but, despite the fact that it's not available ANYWHERE, it was taken off , apparently for a copywrite thing

  • @aceshigh130 Here you go: TOMMY ROE & THE SATINS Sheila (Judd version)

  • @aceshigh130 Yeah.. Although,in this case it's an exeption that a rérecording sounds cool.

But ,indeed, in comparison with the original '62 version this sounds a bit clean.

    Great song. Timeless arangement.

  • @aceshigh130 - here is the tag line: TOMMY ROE & THE SATINS Sheila (Judd version)

  • Why knock the guy if this song sounds like Tommy Roe is trying to sound like Buddy Holly. I liked Buddy Holly too...but remember, Roe was an accomplished musician, performer and song writer and released more top 10 hit songs in the 1960's than The Beatles. I don't think he has to defend his style. The numbers speak for themselves.

  • @JamesA46 - I TOTALLY agree with you James! Ron

  • @JamesA46 I doubt if Tommy Roe released MORE top ten hits then the Beatles...But if you can back that statement up,I'll be glad to see it.

  • @wolfmantip More Top 40 hits in the 1960's than the Beatles....be a good project for you to research. If you check it out yourself, your more apt to remember it.

  • @JamesA46 I know the 60's, we were talking about Tommy Roe, who was a very good artist, But the claim was he had more top TEN hit's then the Beatles...name them. And Please don't even mention " jam up and jelly tight" .

  • @JamesA46 Need to get the numbers right. The Beatles had 27 number one hits in the sixties

  • @JamesA46 Um, no, at least not according to reality.

    Roe: 11 Top 40 --- 6 Top 10 --- 2 #1s

    The Beatles: 51 Top 40 --- 34 Top 10 --- 27 #1s

Kids, just say no to drugs.

  • I was a sophomore in High School when Tommy Roe released this song and this indeed is the original recording.

  • not very original, it sounds like a remake of a buddy holly song, but we all know that that buddy would never have done this song...it's just boring...

  • The quality is great too, almost like listening to vinyl, thanks for posting this, I don't like to play my 45 too often....It's very old

  • @rioyoki-you are very welcome! Ron

  • I was totally named after this song! My parents were such hippies ha ha. They played that 45 everyday when I was a little girl. That was always my song. Except when I was a child I thought the love was innocent between father and daughter, not lovers... innocence is what made it even more sentimental for me....

  • My "big" brother use to play this sone on his reocrd player in the 50's ... many, many years ago.

  • I think some kid named Joe South played on this little gem.....

  • gheezz theres a lot versions of this geting around , but i think mayb this could be correct one

  • shades of yester year, yeah, i remember driving my 57 chevy all over town with this gem playing about every 20 min. very popular, still enjoyed here in victoria bc canada

  • Love this!

  • One of my favourites, thanks for posting Ron

  • @James0022ify - you are welcome Jim! Ron

  • Thank you for posting the correct version of this song!!!! there's about 20 of remakes that really don't do this version any justice!!!

  • @jhs517 - you are welcome! I'm glad you like my video and Tommy's music! Ron

  • Request! Tommy Roe 'Sugar Cane' ABC 11076 released 1968 as a single.

  • One of the best songs ever recorded! The Buddy Holly influence is all over this tune!

  • I can remember this song from way back in my youth, talk about sending me back to better days, and brighter times, absolutely incredible, and it still sounds as good now as it did then. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, bud.

  • You are welcome Doug! Ron

  • Oh I love this one Ron - A right toe tapper - Thanks Hon !!!

  • blueticecho- you are very welcome! Ron

  • This is a cool one. Thank's so much !!

  • allaboard- you are welcome! Ron

  • This version is what I heard over the radio at the time, there were several versions of this song in youtube, they sound slightly different, this one Tommy Roe did it with the clearest voice, not a bit noise from the throat , this is no doubt the hit version.

  • You are correct!

  • this song is special to me! tks. for posting rwells47
