all of this guys videos are great and he brings up things you normally wouldent think about like the wood instead of the plastic casing for the pa speakers
I'm very curious about running the base and kick drum through the bottoms and running everything else through the tops! Do you control this from the board, I am assuming? How do I do that?
My educated guess here, is that, since there is a separate output for subs and tops, you can choose, per channel, who/what goes where as with using monitors, and how much.
I hope Im making sense! please respond as i will be using this technique in the future!
@Dexiotechnia You got it. it's called running subs on an aux. really cleans up your low end. Less harmonic distortion on the low end and keeps vocals more clear etc.
@leefanyee Put on some well recorded music that you are familiar with. Tinker with the settings and walk around and listen. Ultimately, you want the highs, mids and lows to reproduce the frequencies with the most efficiency.t. Change your settings and listen for when it sounds clearest and most impressive. Then grab a mic and listen extensively at different volumes. Trial and error will teach you a lot. Good luck- let me know how it goes or if you want more tips. Cheers
@danpaolangeli This is a very smooth skill, I like that. But I believe that how many errors we could trial depend on how much knowledge we have, and how high the quality we want, isn't it?
Dave, you are truly a guitarists friend, thanks for everything you have showed me over the months or maybe years. This video covers it all, it's really delivered in a way that makes us feel like we are part of the band, so thanks! Rock on Good People!! JT in Maine!!
@ryancangri Hi again Ryan! Subwoofers are omni-directional by nature. If a given frequency is larger than the diaphragm producing it (wavelength wise) the speaker can't control its directionality in a conventional sense. So, put it wherever you want! Every flat surface provides a 3dB increase. Shove it in a corner and you let the lows consume you. Phase is the big factor with this though- make sure your sub is either placed in phase with mains or aligned with processing. Cheers!
@danpaolangeli Yeah, that's what I thought. I just needed clearification. I have my own jazz duo and I'm thinking about getting a pa system either from RCF or KV2, consisting of 2 10's and a 12" sub. This way I can mic the drum set and have total control over the sound.
2 18 inch subs will give you more oomph.if you have a 500 seater room, a single 18 will not cut it. What size horn is in those tops? Good vid, but sure wish you had some silence behind you.
i just bought a peavy unity 1002 soundboard and i cant get the mics to be loud even if i turn the levels and the gain all the way up. Someone please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!
@RunningForLast put in 48Vpower otherwise known as phantom power that might help ^.^ turn down your gain though that just extends the field of sound pick up more or less and it will become even louder if the phantom power is in and it works =P
Hey thanks for the information. I am learning about live sound right now. I have a question. I have a mixer and only one PA active speaker in my practice room. This PA is only getting sound from the left main output but I would like to combine the right and left together. what is the best way to do this?
I just watched his video on what to bring to gigs and he said he likes bringing small guitar stands so you dont have to put them against the wall. But look at where his guitars are lol.
Good bit of info. What do you do if your band uses non master volume marshalls. My band uses them and we crank them to get the tone with no attenuators. We use very loud stage volume and haven't gotten any complaints on our sound???
I've actually came to the conclusion that loud stage volume helps us achieve the vintage sound we're after anyway. Just because there is more control over mix doesn't make it better, just makes it more sterile.

Half-stacks are all they need. Actually the guitarist could get by with a good 40-80 watt tube combo and the bass player with maybe one 300 watt cab...the PA should do the rest of the work. I'm tired of deaf musicians pummeling my ears. Some good pointers. Thanks.

Very good tutorial!! but i have a question. You mention that it's better to separate the instruments going to the speakers. Like kick and bass going to subs! My question is: I personally like my kick and bass to have a little top end, especially for the kick to cut thru the mix. And i like to hear the bass strings to. How do you tackle this situation! thanks man!!
I think it would sound flubby if the kick and bass are separated from the mid-high speakers. It should be coming out from the subs and mid-high speakers, to add wetness to the kick drum, and a small amount of mid and high for the bass guitar. But the subs should only accomodate the kick and bass.
It is wise to use active speakers if you always transport or move your pa system. With the use of active speakers, you can save time setting up your pa. That is what i like with active speakers. JBL PRX? They also sound great.
thanks for the insight into what bands want and need, As a dj i often asked to give extra power to the bands I play around and this was intriguing and insightful for us, cheers
Excellent Video and Presentation! Nicely put and everything you said is so true. big ups on the video, and I completely agree with you with the JBL's. I've been using that particular JBL system for over a year now in Mobile Gigs and I absolutely love them. The best PA manufacture in the market.... period, is JBL! Hands Down! Anyways, great presentation for those getting into the music business, I however, had to go through trial and error to achieve the same results :-D
This is probably the best explanation of what is important and what's not important for the MOST IMPORTANT MIX of the entire small to medium venues........the STAGE MIX!!! Thanks so much for this. I've been mixing sound and playing drums for over 30 years and most bands I've dealt with over the years have NO clue about this very simple but very pertinent issue.
For just the drummers: Get the amps on either side of you and get the WHOLE MIX IN YOURS EARS..especially lead vocals & lead amp!
Additionally for the drummers: Invest in a "Butt Kicker" for your drum throne. UNBELIEVABLE difference in your performance! You won't EVER want it any other way!! I'm serious. Do a search for the ButtKicker - drums. You won't regret it. =D
try your local music store, new or used, it dont matter, it will do the trick. it might be a litte late to order it off the internet b-cuz X-mas is in a couple days...
I think you should save up and buy a real PA...btw jbl = junky but loud...personally and from other professionals, jbl's really aren't that great unless your speanding like hard cash on them...and live bands shouldn't use active cabs EVER normally, execpt like the new makie 3-ways can handle ALOT but those active jbls shouldn't be pumping a whole band..
Monitor effectiveness is greatly determined by the microphone pattern. Although placement of the monitors directly to the back of each microphone works ok for typical cardioid mics (Shure SM58, EV ND267, Sennheiser E835), it is poor placement while using hyper and supercardioid mics (Shure Beta58, EV RE767, Equation DSV10) because of the rear lobe in the pickup pattern of these mics that otherwise exhibit superior resistance to feedback. Also, they sound better aimed at your ears than your nose!
I like your explanation about the wood cabinets..... The PRX series are made out of "duraflex plywood" In other words.... crappy wood. They are no better than plastic cabs. Dont get me wrong because I love the PRX cabs and own 4 of them but they dont sound nearly as good as a quality birch cabinet (such as the QSC powered speakers) which I use for the larger gigs.
couldn't you have done this when the bar wasn't full? kinda distracting

My question is: I personally like my kick and bass to have a little top end, especially for the kick to cut thru the mix. And i like to hear the bass strings to. How do you tackle this situation! thanks man!!
triton92xx 2 years ago
I think it would sound flubby if the kick and bass are separated from the mid-high speakers. It should be coming out from the subs and mid-high speakers, to add wetness to the kick drum, and a small amount of mid and high for the bass guitar. But the subs should only accomodate the kick and bass.

its very good but the active pa system is not good
sokerdan 2 years ago
It is wise to use active speakers if you always transport or move your pa system. With the use of active speakers, you can save time setting up your pa. That is what i like with active speakers. JBL PRX? They also sound great.

I like the last bit. As a sound man it IS tough when you have some guy get on stage who's drunk with a big ego and demands his amp be at full volume.

why dont the monitors cause feed back like the main speakers?
arrowmarcher 2 years ago 2
They do. With equalisation feedback is prevented, just like the main speaker. Monitors often have separate equalisers.

GahDub 3 years ago
Additionally for the drummers: Invest in a "Butt Kicker" for your drum throne. UNBELIEVABLE difference in your performance! You won't EVER want it any other way!! I'm serious. Do a search for the ButtKicker - drums. You won't regret it. =D
