To all of those asking about or arguing the meaning of the title: it is a paradox. The song is about lack of meaning in life, and indeed, as pointed out earlier in the comment thread, the worship of empty things, and so on. Therefore, Muse looking up the words that come respectively before and after "Muse" in a dictionary actually adds to the message of the song. They wrote a song about lack of meaning in life and they gave it a meaningless title, and as such, the title actually has a meaning.

The video reminded me of American Beauty at first (not the stereotypical American Dream...I don't see that connection). It seems like they're all stuck in their mundane lives, they'll never really amount to anything. They're all ignored because people are pitying themselves instead of being together. Notice how most people were alone.

And, I'm pretty sure Muse does most things with meaning. The name of the song has meaning. Don't be stupid.

Why does it have to have an ethos or a morale? In my opinion, thee whole american dream thing seems a bit undermined to me, what with Muse being English... and Muse quite deliberately leave their lyrics sort of vague. If you see them written down, you could interpret them as pretty much anything if you haven't already been told. I don't mean this in a critical way, I love Muse, but not everything needs a message, and I'm happy for it just to be a good song. Anyway, great song, whatever it means.
