  • I think this the best of the pre-Beatle era.

  • Lennon liked Pete Best it was the others who did not @troikagirl because he was pretty self centered and got more attention that everybody else almost. Like he was in it for the fame for himself

  • Pete Best was a WANNA Be the rest of the band well history shows...

  • Why didn't lennon like Pete Best?

  • no lyrics for this song only acustic :(

  • Great instrumental and good fidelity for an early Beatles' number.

  • Possibly the worst stereo mix of a rock instrumental I have ever heard. Is it lead guitar left, everything else center, right channel empty? Is Pete Best doing any of that shouting in the background?

  • It could be anyone banging around back there !

  • Awesome song... If you listen closely you can hear a splice/cut edit at 1:56

  • A little bit,it sounds like Nirvana.

  • @98bigbutt it does not, this was written as a Shadow's parody

  • @98bigbutt u mean nirvana sounds a bit like this

  • @oOQoOpOo,If you make sound more Grunge like I mean.

  • It's amazing how this band had three incredibly talented songwriters, John, Paul and George would later write some of the 20th century's most classic pop songs.

  • love this song

  • Love this song and rare black-white photos! I still have that album somewhere. ;)

  • If Pete's drumming here, does that mean that Stu Sutcliffe is playing bass?

  • @DecemberGuy77 No, Sutcliffe had already go out with his girl friend ... Moreover, the style of Mc Cartney is definitely remarkable on this piece ! (excuse my few mistakes, I'm french ...)

  • The best Beatles' song!!!

  • Pete may be the Best, but Ringo is the Starr.

  • @LuvsMyBear44 Que comentario tan ñoño

  • Bloodyhell, the guitar sound's miles better than anything on about the first 3 albums!!

  • its not the first song, the first song was "in spite of all the danger",but this is a great song to,great video

  • @hugo1997rules In SPite OF All The Danger was written by Paul and George, not George and John

  • @TechnoPath99 sorry,i dont speak english very well, and i didnt read the full description,i thought that you was saying that this was the first song that the make

  • that was the first movie trailer i let play...i think i might go see straw dogs

  • This song is truly wonderful. Seeing an ad for a Tyler Perry movie right before it is why I go to therapy.

  • I must be one of the few that has the album!

  • Replay...replay...replay :)

  • ¡¡¡Temazo!!!

  • This is NOT a song but a great INSTRUMENTAL recording!

  • Not a bad Shadows tribute, though Paul / Pete were no Jet / Tony.

  • @ChasNDaveVideos They said that this was a parody on The Shadows but perhaps it was just to be cool :)

  • @konked To be honest I think a lot of Beatles songs were part tributes-part parodies, particularly later in their career (Yer Blues, Honey Pie, Back In The USSR), but I believe they genuinely admired the music (if not the image) of Cliff & The Shadows in the early days. Apparently George even sung Cliff's drippy ballad 'Dream' (a semi-obscure EP track) back in The Cavern days. : )

  • @ChasNDaveVideos And reading about the bands at that time, the then fresh influences spread quickly with the bands doing each other's songs as well. Of course it is known fact that Beatles/Paul got huge inspiration for Sgt Pepper on Beah Boys' Pet Sounds and Pet Sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul in turn partially inspired by Bob Dylan lyrically. Hey, where did all go? LOL

  • @konked Doesnt the first lead guitar melody bit sound like the solo in 'If you cant give me love' by Suzy Quatro ?

  • This is the song which I was listening when they told me that I would go to Liverpool 4 weeks ago :).... beautiful memories

  • Also that is Pete Best on the drums.

  • I can listen to this thousand million times and I DONT GET TIRED!

    John and George my fav!

  • John and George should of written more songs or peices of music like this together because im pretty sure that Georges skills of perfection and Johns lyrical genius skills would go together like a pea in a pod :)

  • *****

  • For a song called Cry for a Shadow, this is rather upbeat.

  • Beatles 50th Anniversary watch: Recorded on June 22 1961. One of the two first professionally recorded songs by the Beatles--in Hamburg. The other song recorded on this date is Ain't She Sweet.

  • @spirtw72 Cool! :D

  • wish there were words

  • If only this had Ringo's drumming...Pete's is quite bland.

  • 5 people have just killed a little bit of me.

  • @xxTitanicRocksxx I agree, great song! But late 60's, Really? This is more 50s...Inspired by the Shadows :)

  • this sound like beach music before beach music---expect someone to yell 'wipeout!' as usual the beatles music is best in all genres

  • these bloody teenagers know how to make music

  • This is a Beatles tribute instrumental to The Shadows - nuff said.!

Jet Harris and Tony Meehan RIP.

  • Listening to this I think it's a pity that John Lennon and George Harrison didn't write more stuff together.

  • the whole band is Fab

  • time machine

  • Cry for a Shadow+Flying+The End=Awesomeness

  • This stuff is so... sweet. Man, I'm thinking... wondering... myabe it's even better than the stuff they did when they were famous.

  • @Maka1993 nah! But this is good

  • nice, nice, nice, how do i born in liverpool in those years!!

  • this song was never released it would have een perfect especially when surf music was starting

  • @maltesemario it was released in 1964

  • @BonJoviBeatlesLedZep It was released in 1961.

  • @tauroscorp ok.

  • Why can't I post a comment?

  • @TerabyteProductions i'm pretty sure you just did...

  • like this if u like this

  • sounds like summertime :D

  • Petes share of the Anthology was 12 million, and i think they did it as a favor

his drumming on Love Me Do was pretty bad, tho..and it was George Martin that said that they couldnt use his drumming

  • @robrobrob73 That's amazing considereing he didnt have much to do with their career. Pete seems like a nice guy though and doesnt bear any bitterness over what happened. Not publically anyways. It's a great lesson in forgiveness and accepting & moving forward. Being on the precipice of such greatness and then getting boned and having to live with the regret and pain many people would not have survived such a blow. In a way his story is as important as the beatles. Him being rewarded is karma.

  • A hidden jem from the beatles

  • I don't think Pete Best's drumming is that bad. I know he could only drum well in one style, but for that one style, I think he sounds great. That said, Ringo is still a much better drummer.

  • George Harrison and John Lennon were easily one of the greatest lead and rhythm guitar combinations ever. RIP John and George.

  • I was born in the wrong century :(

  • @TheJeswin1997 same here. D:

  • the pic of the boys standing on the roof in their cowboy boots , sexiest pic ever

  • @frog33ww lol i live in texas. we like boys like that ;)

  • a tribute to the most underrated band of all time, The Shadows.

    RIP Jet.

  • I think this is my favorite Beatles song. Ha. XD

  • Pete Best got a settlement from Apple Corps of roughly 3 million pounds(5million american)...He deserved it in my humble opinion.

  • @tadams67 your a disgrace to the beatles, and any song they have. because ringo was in all of them and if he wasnt, they wouldnt sound the way they did, soo why dont you not say stuff like that

  • I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE GUITAR! ♥

  • Who's playing lead, John or George?

  • @leighto27 George

  • @leighto27 most likely George.

  • @leighto27 tony sheridan

  • Aw, I love the early records. This song was included in the first Beatles' cassette that I bought.

It's hard to believe that I bought the tape at 13 and that I've spent almost 20 years listening to The Beatles. Gosh, I'm quite old!! lol

  • this piece of music sums up the spirit of early 60s beat music for me

  • @melapelasinparar maybe he say he was the coolest, in personality and looking xd

    sorry my poor english

  • wow cry for a shadow what a great song i love beatles the early years thanks!

  • Wow, cool! You can really hear the obvious Buddy Holly influence here. Nice.

  • i searched hell and high waters to finally find the name of the song, you know how hard it is to find a song with no lyrics? I remember this from when i was little, thanks for posting it!

  • Rare Beatles instrumental.

  • Imagine the life you could have had Pete Best. Your drumming sucked and you missed out. You should have concentrated more on playing and less on the girls. Now you`re just a footnote in history....

  • @whyyeseyec Now that is very sad, and wrong. Pete tried to do himself in you know? Ok, he wasn't the best, but I am sure glad he got and maybe still gets a cut of the Anthology stuff, and from Polydor. (Not certain on the latter, I just think it might be the case. )

  • @Joshua12345 : Pete Best doesn`t get a cut of anything. He didn`t play on any Beatle songs. He was fired in 1962. Sorry but the band knew early on he wasn`t very good. If he was good he would certainly have gotten on with another band or started his own....

  • @whyyeseyec I'm not the slightest bit interested in arguing on here, it's pointless, but you are very wrong on him not getting anything. An Apple rep visited him around the time of the Anthology and offered him a relevant share. As for the rest of your points, they're just based on contention, and I couldn't be bothered.

  • @Joshua12345 : Please explain what `benefits` you think Best is owed. Once again, he played on n-o-t-h-i-n-g. He was fired before the tidal wave hit.

  • @whyyeseyec Just to clarify, some tracks on Anthology 1 were archival material that DID have Pete on drums. And, yeah, he did get a small share of the profits from that one album. Still a pretty significant amount of money. But don't assume I'm a fan. In my opinion Ringo rules. I honestly think the decision was made to include some tracks with Pete on drums to prove the point of why they replaced him.

  • @whyyeseyec I'm pretty sure he did form his own band after he left the Beatles

    *moments later*

    Yup... It's even on Wikipedia.

  • The Hamburg days...what a great era it might have been. This song, more than any other, describes it the best.

Yet there's still some innocence, but at the same time, their music is taking shape, already announcing marvelous thing to come.

It's just my opinion. From all I read about them, if I could go back in time and select a period to hang out with the Beatles, it would be the Hamburg days. This recording was made in 1961, the second time they were there. I was about two years old.

  • On this track is John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass, George Harrison on lead guitar and Pete Best on drums.

  • This must have been McCartney, Paul, John, Stuart, and Best.

  • 0:54 - 1:15 They sure know how to rock those boots ;)

  • they are all great but paul and john were supeirior because paul could play the most instruments and john had the smarts but in my opinion paul is best because he was a better guitarist than john better drummer than ringo and as good or if not better than george at guiatar and still went on to make a band that has many singles

  • @beatlesforever123456 You state all of that as if it's a fact. Paul is not as good a lead guitarist as George. You listen to Georges lead guitar work on The Beatles and his solo career....he had more heart and I think he was technically better than Paul. It's a bit of a stretch to say Paul was a better drummer than Ringo, I prefer Ringo myself. John only said that as a throw away comment. Remember that George played bass on a few Beatles tracks....maybe George was better on bass than Paul?

  • @beatlesforever123456 George was far and away the best guitarist in the band. No question. George could jam with the best of them but chose to be more understated, and thank God he did otherwise The Beatles wouldn't have been The Beatles. And Ringo was the best drummer. I'm not even sure Paul was a more proficient guitarist than John. Even if he was, for the most part I think John's acoustic work sounds more beautiful to my ears than his (Blackbird is the exception).

  • @superman11978 you got everything wrong. This isn't Ringo on drums, it's Pete Best. And Blackbird was all Paul.

  • was stuart on bass in this track?

  • @ SezbobHeal. I find it hilarious you come onto a song written by John Lennon and George Harrison only to say Paul McCartney is "the best". What is he the best at may I ask? George Harrison I feel is a better guitarist. And I prefer John Lennon as a singer and songwriter over Paul. I guess we all have our favourites.

  • @FaithIsAnnoyed I like your answer and really get annoyed with people like Sezbobheal who put forth their personal opinion as "fact."

  • Four lads the like we wont see again

  • @jenks1937 Ain't that a shame?

  • this is not the first composition from the beatles...it is however the only published song by just john and george.

  • Greatest Beatles instrumental ever. The song doesn't even sound dated.

  • i'm not one to single one of them out... but Paul is the best. just saying.

  • 1:26 john in skinnys

  • Hey / Interesting picture at 1:46. Paul on bass with Stuart on bass too !!

  • nunca entendi por que este tema ( por ejemplo) nunca estuvo en un disco, nunca salio a la luz años despues de su grabacion :(

    temazo de harrison :)

  • i love the ringo drums on this one

  • @zeroleminski Ringo did not join The Beatles until the year of 1962. Pete Best was the drummer at this time.

  • Thou shall not compare Beatles (with each other(

  • One of the Greats!

  • Que bien tocaba George harrison la guitarra ,sin ninguna duda es uno de los grandes guitarristas de rock,n,roll del siglo xx.

  • great song

  • how much excitement and amazing energy in just one short instrumental - and a parody, really! whoever missed these guys (cf. decca etc.) know better now hehe

  • I love this song, it's awesome!!

  • Love this......amazing early Beatles......great pictures.....thanks so much for sharing!!!

  • I think the best beatle was, John, Ringo, George, and paul. I really do in no particular order

  • wahhhhhhhhhhhh 1:30

  • Pete Mediocre

  • This was Beatle tribute to Hank Marvin

  • this is the only song credited to lennon/ harrison

  • Actually Pete was the "Best" Beatle.

  • @neverfrisco ah hahahah. Nice.

  • @neverfrisco are you what???

  • @neverfrisco hahah.. are you a Pet Best family guy?...

  • Responder a este vídeo... or pete best write the amazing song like the paul or john or george?? why? or what? is pete beste more bettrer than them? im wondering

  • What was funny was that john loathed the shadows so ive always felt this more of a parody.

  • @huskernation9 "before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music." - John Lennon. The Beatles hating the Shadows thing is a myth. They were on good terms - The Beatles used to stay at the Shadows' villa in Portugal.

  • the guitar in this is so... Fab!

  • Actually, this one is written by Paul and George and is the only song credited to those two.

  • @rmaxinmass man you are soo wrongs this is a Harrison-Lennon song and its the only one ^^

  • rawboned Beatles. Love the off-mike screaming by John.

  • they were all so amazing in their own ways. George is the most underrated songwriter though

  • the beatle suck ass...... psych! xp no the beatles fucking rule!!! my favorite song they did was on the bbc album(radio show) keep your hands off my baby!! and also to know her is to know her hell i like all the albums and almost all the songs =D

  • layan lagu nie beb

  • With the title "Cry For A Shadow", I wonder if this song was The Beatles' way of making fun of The Shadows. George said that they thought The Shadows were lame. Thoughts?

  • @smeh69 It was written by George Harrison with John Lennon as a parody of the Shadows style. (The Shadows, who backed Cliff Richard were the biggest British instrumental rock & roll group at the time of the recording.) It imitates the lead guitar with typical Hank Marvin licks, the melodic bass fills, and even has an imitation during the second middle 8 of the famous Jet Harris yell. It is the only Beatles track to be credited to Lennon and Harrison alone

  • @smeh69 This is a myth - the Beatles and the Shadows were on good terms. They shared the same studios and used to attend eachothers' parties. George Harrison even advised Hank Marvin in 1965 that the Shadows should record more vocals.

  • I think many people divide the Beatles into early and later Beatles.

I prefer the early stuff. Once flower power and drugs took over alot of it was not my taste.

  • this is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

  • @CKBeats09 Screw you, man. This is history.

  • Sutcliffe will always be the coolest of the group

  • @philphie Sutcliffe was a hack musician. Everyone knew it.

  • is this pete on drums, i guess it would be, ringo didnt come till' late 1962- early 1963.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9

it's pete, but i've heard about some overdubbing sessions for the drums because also sheridans producer thought that best really wasn't the best.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 paul's alive.

  • @imagine5454 i know, i just thought it would be a cool name, but the rumor is pretty interesting.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 yes, Pete drums since this was recorded on 22 June 1961

  • excellent shadowesque track...BETTER THINGS TO COME EH

  • It's things like this that show why The Beatles became what they did. The polish and musicianship is apparent here.

  • i love Georgies boots

  • 'Cry for a shadow' is/any which way you want it/either a joke or a tribute to the most popular instrumental guitar band in Europe at that time:The Shadows with lead guitarist Hank Marvin who created a high definition style on his Stratocaster backed by other distinctive musicians. Other bands were standing in the shadow at those moments in 1961.The Beatles then broke through in 62/63 - next sonic generation! The Shadows are presently touring (again) various continents with singer Cliff Richard.

  • wow- John finally figured out George was a great songwriter too.George and Ringo were so often ignored. George was a great guitar player- and this shows it along with George's other songs.

  • I must say i entirely share the comments of jenzeppelin. Btw you're not a Led Zep fan as well are you

  • Yes Johnny and George are grooving on this one. not to mention Paul and Petes stellar rythym!

  • Wow. I knew nothing about the formative stages of the Beatles until watching this. This is a cool song but I'm still glad they switched.

  • @janfreidun Before they were COMMERICIAL? Fuck you, man. They're the greatest fucking band to ever play.

    And Ringo kicked Pete's ass.

  • the Beatles went though 3 stages. 1. Greaser ...2. sexy...3. hairy..

  • I think I like the 2nd better, but I love the music made in all of them.

  • I read where Lennon didn't even want to play on songs Harrison wrote...Kinda sad.

  • woah these r awesome pics. they look like greasers!!!! i didn't know they went through a phase like that!!! sick!! :)

  • It was the 'Teddy Boy' style. Prostitutes wore that style soon after they switched to suits. When people saw these pictures, they were all jaw dropped.

  • This is the Beatles BEFORE Brian Epstein. He formed the phase with the mop tops and suits

  • @monkpie101 Yes You are right this is at the timne when they were still a fly rock n roll group that had to fire pete and record bland pop!!!!
