Kubrick treated this movie more like painting and opera than film. It's not really a film in the classic OR modern sense. The slowness, bizarre music, repetitious sound-effects, & huge image (when seen as intended, on the big screen) are all meant to put the viewer into a sort-of trance. People didn't need editing programs in the 60s to make this movie more interesting - they had psychedelics. It's a hell of a lot more fun THAT way.
Is it that today people have ADD or that we are better educated and make the connections much faster then the movie makers would have expected back then?
this whole section with the dawn of man is just so greatly amusing to me. The timing of every action and reaction, plus the discovery of beating your rivals to death with bones, always a classic
I like the full movie the way it is. Some people are BMW's, they bitch moan and whine. 2001 is a movie that should not be trifled with. If it seems too long to you don't watch it. Or learn to grow some patience.
The bone turning into the spaceship is a phenomenal scene and the climax of The Dawn of Man scene. Here is a yet another video posted by a bonehead that puts the flying bone in one video and the falling spaceship in another........f$%^%$%$££ck
well I loved to see your work .. but here you cut one of the mos beatiful scenes .. on the end when the bone crosses the space e we enter in the present time ... 2 minutes more and this sequence will be perfect ;)

I'm not gunna lie, this was a weird movie. The good part only lasted for like 30 min. if compressed together and there was a TON of filler. Also the monkey scenes are just out right funny. I had a classmate who described this film well,
"It starts off with a bunch of monkeys hitting each other and it ends with a giant sun-baby."

Yeah I don't know what the hell I was thinking doing this a year ago. I would take these videos down but oddly enough I've gotten the most views on this one lol @UridonTheMaster
@UridonTheMaster Screw the MTV/CGI generation! This is a film for true moviegoers! This cut is as bad as George Lucas' re-edits of the STAR WARS films (the original trilogy). Re-cutting this film is like re-cutting CITIZEN KANE!
I don't think they could ever do a remakie of 2001, but they could reimagine it. There are aspects of Clark's novel that just did not translate well into the original film. I would like to see what could be done to incorporate more of Clark than Kubrick. Not that Kubrick's interpretation was wrong; it's just different.
Modern filmmakers ("hollywood") need to avoid anything Kubrick has done, no remakes whatsoever under any circumstances...there are none who can come close to holding a candle to him..none
@notfauxnooz It's not about Kubrik interpretation. The movie and the novel were written together between clarke and Kubrik so the story is, mostly, the same. Changes occurred in the movie only beacuse some things (like the Saturn novel setting) were impossible to get right on film.
the ending is almost the same: Clarke explains it, Kubrik doesn't.
I am so glad a misguided remake of this classic hasn't been attempted. Michael Bay or Rolland Emerich would have to direct. All the mystery would have to be removed. The aliens would have to be shown--adorable with big heads and eyes. Fast paced with lots of 3D CGI stuff, lots of flag-waving, a politically-correct female lead, and the script changed to fit the special effects rather than the other way around. It is folly to tamper with greatness--like painting over the Mona Lisa to "update it."
@twooffour "Come on, by politically correct you mean hot, right?" No, that's not what I meant. I actually had in mind a female lead who HAS to be smarter/stronger than all the guys. The model for this is Ripley, in the 1979 classic "Alien". It was novel, welcome, and long overdue at the time. Now it has become tedious--that's the difference. A good recent example is Arwen in Lord of the Rings.
@MrBackwardssdrawkcab I've never uploaded anything on YouTube before. I do have the DVD though. I'll think about it. I'm concerned about copyright issues.

The begining of 2001 i feel, suggests that the Monolith appears on Earth followed soon after (perhaps via direct mind message from the Monolith) by the Apes acquiring the ability to use tools and thus begin to hunt and therefore consume meat. As a result of this diet change, brain power is boosted thus setting the wheels in motion for the evolution of modern Man.
In order to understand this movie you must the complete version. It is a very phillosopical film, just try to relax and open your spirit. You can get the full movie here in youtube.

Thanks. I want to watch the whole one (I'm not lazy) But it's 12:31 AM right now, and I can't afford to dump a lot of my sleep time into this movie right now. :P Plus I can't find the whole one right now.
Thanks Adam, I had no idea what it was about. Hopefully an even shorter version will be edited with more modern music, less boring bits, and a clear explanation. In fact, Dave should blow up the monolith, like Transformers, at the end ,and not be turned into a baby...The Original Kubrick film is too mysterious and I don't like to think too much. Isn't Michael Bay doing a remake?
thanks, it was too long to start with, all that stuff with the monkeys and the big baby at the end doesn't make sense. Can you add some action scenes? And where's the explanation? Can you also tint it green/orange or sepia like every other film today?... But it is still too mysterious. Cut out that hotel room bit at the end! I want everything explained or I will get bored, or even worse, have to use my imagination!
@psynno1 i think i can explain some of it to you. of course if i am wrong i would gladly stand corrected. I think the monolith is of aloen origin sent to earth to make man more intellegent setting him on the long road to eventual space travel. The signal from jupiter is a lure to entice men to it. The aliens then make dave age so he dies and then can make him be reborn but as a much more powerful and intellegent lifeform. Thus all human evolution is just one big alien experiment
this is fucked up. you're totally butchering another artist's work. Stanley Kubrick released this movie exactly how he wanted it to be seen. If people don't like it, they don't like it. Don't fuck up someone's creation because you think people will like your version more.
No man. look at the title of the videos, and the description. This is an edited version that shortens a ton of scenes. This is an hour long. 2001 is over 2 hours.
I don't like it. I get what you're trying to do here, but the slow pacing is too much a part of the film to be removed without hugely changing it. In this section, the faster pace completely robbed the enlightenment moment of its power. 2001 is one of my all time favorite films and if "modern audiences" can't appreciate it, its their loss. What you are doing here is misrepresenting a masterpiece and robbing 2001 of new viewers. Please remove this and let 2001 speak for itself.
@ChainsmokingPothead it's a little different when they are playing 'early' humans. Now if they were dressed up in giant woodchuck costumes, it would be a valid point. Might not be a bad idea for a remake of this... giant woodchucks..
Here's what's really odd: watch the original King Kong from 1933. People really fell for the mechanical contrivance called King Kong. Close-ups of Kong's face had women fainting/screaming in the aisles. That's comedy.
lovely evolution into violence. LOL EPIC FAIL.
that's not human nature.

I appreciate what you did here, thanks for the HD upload.

this is fucked up. you're totally butchering another artist's work. Stanley Kubrick released this movie exactly how he wanted it to be seen. If people don't like it, they don't like it. Don't fuck up someone's creation because you think people will like your version more.

@HaloReplicas
No man. look at the title of the videos, and the description.

Decent idea, but I honestly think anyone watching it for the first time should see the original cut. Kubrick did it his way for a reason.
