The way the contract is read is like so:

Michael Blackson has to do one of the following:

1) Cancel 15 days before event

2) Refund the deposit

3) Provide a suitable replacement

He did number 3, which is all he is required to do by the contract. Judge misread his contract - he was only required to give 15 days notice if he is cancelling - not for the other 2 options.
