  • OK, so I'm getting the processor's running, the display looks okay. You've got a great deal of digital noise on the analog audio rails it seems like. If you have a scope, you should look at the power rails, all of them, relative to ground, and obviously they ought to be smooth. Are you powering it with a lab supply? The other evidence I see is that the envelopes are opening, but the notes are not changing. Is that right? Do the envelope controls work at all?

  • @sleat Thanks for the comment, but "English, please." That video was shot at my tech's shop before I took it home. Are far as the envelope controls, I'm not sure - I haven't messed with the synth in nearly 2 years since making this video. I've got a EVU to quench my PPG lust until I get this 2.3 running.

  • PPG 2.3 goes for around 9000 NOK ,but earlyer 25000.-wery much for a synth that has the same as my pc:-))

  • sounds like u made a bad deal

  • The BBC have one, theirs doesn't work anymore either

  • Sounds like my cat after it's well fed and happy. I love those PPGs.

  • So how did the repair go finally ? Does it work now ? I hope .

  • Nope, it just sits looking pretty. Alex @ Virtual Music in Vienna wants me to ship the whole unit to him so he can better diagnose. I can't afford to do that right now. I'll be sure to post a video once it's working, but it will be a while :(

  • I hella want one these beautiful blue synths, but the blofeld will do

  • Why? Please explain.

  • This things new sold for 32,000 USD (if what I read in a web site is true!!!)back in the 80s...

  • No, not really.

    More like 8000.

    WT

  • i just bought one with the original bill in the manual and it says 14000 dutch guilders so with the rates from dose days it was 9000$

  • Thanks to calyx3 & Handsfelloff. I forwarded your comments to my tech. I hope he can get it working. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.

  • hi zibbybone

can i have your technicians phone number?

i have some mayor problems with my ppg 2.3 aswel maybe he can help my technician?

    thx mike

  • I used Audio Electronics in Dallas, but they were not able to fix it. I sent the 4 removable cards to Virtual Music in Vienna for repairs and updates, but now I'm being told he (Alex @ Virtual Music) needs mw to send him the entrire synth to diagnose. Best of luck with your repairs.

  • Just one VERY important thing. DO NOT break or damage the card's pins or the receptacles that they fit into. These are virtually impossible to replace. Just gently cleaning the pins and inserting/reinserting them several times will usually do the job.

These are fine, fun and very special instruments when working - and they do for a long time with some maintenance - they're worth the time and money for the sound. Us PPG owners are a small bunch, so do keep us posted as to your progress :)

  • one last thing.. ram can get corrupt data or wiped if there is a power ripple (again happend to me).... change that silver PSU cap! make of that as the first thing. I have been through the repair mission its quite a stress I know so Good luck !

  • Also Reset the ram and resysex the factory presets ensure all of the osc in the tunning page are set the same like (12,12,12,12,12,12,12,12) open the filters turn on env and set all the delay and sustain to 63. ppg's are complex instruments and not quite as plug in play as a moog, some features get are switched in the os.

  • Definately change the PSU cap the big silver one. Alexander has replacements he will probably send you if you cant find an adequante replacement. Also buy some conductive contact spray clean and spray the motherboard contacts and board plugs. These oixidise with age and lost contact. My 2.3 was firing on four 4 voices and this fixed it up.

  • Definately change the PSU cap Alexander has a replacement he will probably send you. Also buy some conductivity contact spray and clean the mother board slots. My 2.3 was only firing on 4 voices until it cleaned out the sockets.... they become oxidized over the years and lose contact.

  • Thanks for the info, Calyx93. My 2.3 is at my tech. I will forward this information to him. He actually got it to work corrctly once.

  • Yes - something is very wong here. I've got a 2.2 with boards repaired by Alexander, but mine works. However, just after booting up, mine will totally distort into something like very rapid tremolo/AM modulation, but only on the first note I play. After that, everything is fine. Your distored/mangled output sounded like the glitch on mine a handful of times when you were "playing." I'm really not sure what causes it.

  • (continuing my prior post)

How's your power supply - it probably needs some attention at this point? Are all your pins on the cables seated properly? Are any loose or broken? How's the condition of your ribbon cables? Are your cards seated securely - cleaning the pins can help sometimes. The thing should really be recapped at this point in its life too - everywhere inside and on every card. Good luck!

  • I get the same. I have also installed the new OS. Maybe its a quirk of the new system. No matter its just a boot up thing.

  • congratulations in purchasing the 2.3,

really first real PPG WAVE vid on youtube:D

get it fixed and share with us:D

  • The repair is not looking very promising, but if we can get it running, I'll be sure to share.

  • hey, first video of a ppg wave on youtube! Is it broken? Will you make more vids?

  • I bought this PPG last year non-working. I sent the internal boards to Alex @ Virtual Music in Austria to get latest OS & fix some issues. Now the synth is put back togeter at my tech here in Dallas, but it's putting out this weird modulation. I made this video to show Alex, but the file size is 70 megs! So I posted it here. Hopefully he knows what is wrong with it & it can be fixed soon. When fixed, I'll post demos. Save my profile since I'll be posting vidoes of more vintage synths.
