The workers' movement here just picked up a lot of recruits from people pissed off at Republican governors in the Midwest who make Maggie Thatcher look left-wing. Republicanism in the European sense is so dominant here as to go unmentioned.

When I say democracy when we organise it for ourselves I mean participatory class formations. I think the opposite to the fetishism of organisation that you criticise should be noted, i.e. the fetish of the program. After all, if the proletariat are the revolutionary subject, then it is idealist (not materialist) to say that the program must dictate to them, rather than to demand that they dictate the program.

Just to clarify, are you saying that democracy is good when we organise it ourselves, but meaningless when the elites lay down the rules, parameters and context for it because that means they basically rig the process? In which case I very much agree. Or is there something extra I missed as well as that?

Let me put it this way. Under a normal bourgeois "democracy," the revolutionary group has at least some ability to organize and speak. Under fascism, you get nothing, and then you get shot. Fascism solves the problem of class struggle by organizing society as a permanent state of bourgeois victory through class collaboration, whereas normally capitalism creates class struggle.

The CNT was not at any time a Moscow-supported organization. The Stalinists betrayed the CNT during the Barcelona May Days and sent GPU agents into the ranks to sabotage the war. Anti-fascism is ALWAYS revolutionary. Communal and democratic management of workplaces is at the core of revolutionary ideology because it requires that the capitalist be expropriated and deprived of managerial power. Capitalism by definition must have private ownership and control of production.

I'm listening to this to get myself psyched for a possible general strike throughout Europe on September 29 organized by the CNT and UGT, unions which have always been on the front line in revolutionary struggles. From being on the front lines against fascism in the Spanish Civil War to helping institute workplace democracy in Catalonia. They are two of the best unions in history, and I proudly stand beside them. Solidarity Forever!
