Wow, Gareth Gates as Marius! That's something I never thought I'd hear. I prefer Michael Ball but I think this is wonderful too. Gareth hasn't lost any of his charm and gets better as the years go by. That can't be said for many artists, especially recording artists who move into theatre.
@KingMingus Nick Jonas was a ticket seller and nothing more. The almighty dollar doesn't care about art, music, or quality performances. He was used, poor fellow.
The chap singing currently isn't very impressive, either.
@ncisgigfan i agree with you. each performer brings something different to the role, and i think that comparing each one just takes more away from the whole picture than we realize. these people work hard to give a good performance and we should appreciate it.
I never thought of him as a good low singer, but he gets those low notes very well and very nicely. Not the most powerful version I've heard, but one of my favourites nonetheless.
Hope to see him get only better and better if he continues with musical theatre.
Check my cover out of stars and Empty chairs and empty tables if you would please guys! Let me know what you think :) hope I did it justice! Sorry its a bit out of sink.. still... I hope its a good listen! :D
Why are all these comments about Nick Jonas? This video has nothing to do with him...
Gareth is an awesome Marius! I personally prefer the younger ones, i think the slightly higher, more youthful voice adds to the character, how young he really is and yet he is risking his life for a higher cause...
@handsdown101 Yes I know, I just don't see why everyone needs to compare the two, just as I don't see why everyone needed to compare Nick with Michael Ball. I think all three of them were great, although I have always thought Michael Ball was a little old for the role; Like I said in my first comment, I like the younger ones.
Ok Im a dude and heterosexual Garreth is light years better then Nick Jonas and singing and acting. And I think he is more handsome so ladies whats the problem. If Nick Jonas wouldnt sound like a whiny dieing squirell and you know was even just ok. Id be fine because Romin, and Alfie, and Sam are awesome. In the words of the Big Lebowski "Your out of your element Donnie" So are you Nick your just out of your league and if you dont know it then heaven help you.
i saw the show last night and he was in it, he was amazing!!!! i remember when he just became famous, now he has been kinda forgotten, but he makes such a good marius!!
The thing I love about Michael Ball, particularly in the 10th anniversary concert, is that his voice is so pure, strong and damn right loud that it sounds as if the microphone he was using was on the edge of breaking. He clearl gave it everything! I saw Gareth Gates in August, he was truely brilliant. An audio with no video does not do him justice, his acting as Marius was supurb, I've never seen such a convincing perfomance. Ever. x
@KingMingus totally agree with you... Nick Jonas was blasted out of the waters by the other performers and it irks me when Jonas fans said he was good... If we continue to have Mariuses like Jonas, too bad for les mis!
@alexmz123 So true. There was even someone who said that Nick Jonas sounded a lot like Michael Ball, and even said that Michael Ball was a "TERRIBLE actor". Man, what a taste for music this person had.
@LiMaBue true.. but i heard somewhere that Ramin wasnt traditionally trained in the theater either.. he just has a lot more time and experiance behind him.. everyone has to start somewhere! =)
@HappyThoughtsToU Jonas' performance was unique and sincere, but, as you said, NOTHING compared to Ball's passionate and perfectly executed performance.
So beautiful. I think Gareth's voice is very much suited to musicals. That's not to say I didn't love his previous work. I've seen him perform this live at the Barbican and I was mesmerised.
I saw this last night. I've lost count how many times I've seen Les Mis but the new staging and direction is superb and Gareth was an excellent Marius, and John Owen-Jones to me is the very best Jean Valjean.
You know, I'm usually not for Tenors singing this song since Michael Ball (the original Marius) is a baritone...but I'd be a fool to say that was anything but awesome! Thank you for putting this up here, I really appreciate it...
My fav song of the whole play i have been in love with it since i can remember yet i think michael ball sings it better than this although gareth does sing it well
I SAW THIS LAST NIGHT, OOOOH MY GOD. THIS WAS THE BEST SONG - THE WAY IT WAS PERFORMED WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM LONDON, I WAS WEEPING. WEEPING. SO MUCH WEEPING. WITH THE CANDLES AND UGH. <3
Seen this twice in the last 2 weeks at Bristol Hippodrome. Brilliant new production. All the main characters are immense, John Owen-Jones as Valjeean, Earl Carpenter as Javert, Gareth Gates as Marius, Rosalind James as Eponine, Ashley Artus and Lynne Wilmot as the Thenardiiers, Katie Hall as Cosette.
Going to see it again in London next month. Best musical ever.
Wonderful version. I wasn't a fan of him as a pop star, but went to see him with an open mind, and was absolutely stunned by his performance! I'd definitely see him in theatre again!
it's amazing to think that he was once that young guy with a stutter. Now he's amazing, makes Nick Jonas look crap

Much better than the Jonas version, in my opinion. He adds his own personality to it. But he can't beat Michael Ball. He is the King of the muscials.

@alexmz123 I agree, he was a really bad Marius. When he was singing with Ramin, he just looked like a little child compared to a well trained singer.
