I'm totally on board with Bourdain here. I know Italian food is about far more than tomato sauces or even pasta. But man alive, there are times when I get a jones for "red gravy", and nothing else will quite hit the spot.
Manganaro Restaurant and Catering is an awful, horrible place. Its owner is a deranged woman who screams at her employees and is rude (soup Nazi-esque) to her customers. See the Yelp review for this place.
@arthurkitchen Where is it better in the US? Honestly, haha. I'm ignorant. I'm from California. Almost everything is a cheap bastardization here. I try to find good food here but I'm sure most of it is 2nd or 3rd rate of what you can find elsewhere
@hotpants69 Anywhere! NY has so many fucking foreigners that stink up the place and people ignorant enough to live with roaches and filth. Hell, Vegas, Maine, Florida, freaking Indiana has better food and far better prices and far fewer losers!
ive never been to NYC but these little shops are what i think make NYC, NYC, sure the skyscrapers make it, but the little delis that have been around 100yrs are what make the city have a heart, it will be a pity if more and more close down.
@uberlyhandsome lmfao...yes fuck the greatest country and super power in the world! fuck em all!!! fuck the land that people border hop, lie, cheat, scrape and theif their way into in order to fulfill their dreams! fuck americans! now i do agree on one thing, Fuck obama for sure lol...but give some Americans credit...Willy Nelson is fkin awesome...Chuck norris is amazing....for SOME reason people want to come here...so actually sir >< fuck you!!!
Why didn't anyone mention the feud and the forgotten brothers Mario and Vincent Dellorto? By the way, is Sal still cheating on his wife? He had a reputation of being a womanizer. ;)
In closing, a relative who lived with Nina Manganaro (my grandmother) as a young bride says "Va fa in cuolo" to their sad looking Italian food. It would put her to shame.

Meatballs, marinara and strange looking pasta... guys this is NOT real italian food... go to italy or at least try some italian dishes in an upper scale restaurant... don't waste your money on these pale imitations...
But they're eating it knowing it's not Italian, it's Italian-American - it's supposed to be a hybrid and a bit of a guilty pleasure. As the other chef said, it's authentic in that it actually represents a Manhatten version of Italian food, cooked in Manhatten for 100 years.

I'm always one for nostalgia, but "Italy's" sense of cuisine has long since been molested. Italian cuisine? I'm sorry, any single thing that Italy has created is merely a byproduct of previously established cuisines/inventions. Italy has this certain stigma that they are responsible for noodle/meat sauce cuisine, but I'm sorry, Italy didn't create shit, and to further perpetuate their noob bullshit, they allied themselves with Germany during WW2. Wow. Italy sucks in every way.
You're straight up wrong, kiddo. Study up on regional Italian fair, and you'll have a clue as to how great Italian food can be. Emphasis on 'can.' It's like saying Chinese food is all sugar and MSG. What you're really talking about when you use generalizations as these is "my exposure is limited to the Americanized versions of foreign cuisines." Which means, add sugar and stupidity, and you'll have mass culture, shit food.
@bigspoonjane You're straight up wrong, kiddo. Study up on regional italian american chef's, and you'll have a clue as to how great American cuisine can be. You fire off at them about proper Italian food. there is NO way to re create proper italian food unless it is in the kitchen of a mother/grandmother/wife of an actual italian woman in Italy. ONLY those that have been there can say that in the dearest of meanings. Your outlook on all Americans food ethics are WAY off base. WAY off base
@modestrocker1 Who cooks pesto over a whole day? You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Tony would slap you up and down for such blatant stupidity. Pesto is assembled in minutes, not cooked slowly over a whole day. Are you a child? How else does one account for such blatant ignorance?
The Holland Bar really just closed? I just went there for the first time last summer while visiting friends and had planned to go there again. Memories of the first visit are hazy.
if that foods been around for a 100 years, its probably rank

Word of advice, never watch food shows if you do not have food readily available to eat at moments notice!
