I never cease to be amazed by the different ways individuals hear "appreciate" music. My purely personal feeling is that Sumi Jo and Maria Callas are like chalk and cheese. Ms Callas has always "left me cold"
The one voice I adore above all others you feel similar to one I dislike. Truly human taste is an unsolvable mystery!
Not being an expert in in classical music and opera, I tried to compare Sumi Jo's performance on this video with others by Ute Ziemer, Natilie Dessay, and Kathleen Battle. I find they differ enough to say that all of these ladies take liberties with the piece, which is not a bad thing.
Dessay, for example, throws in a high note at the end. In fact, you can get a stark comparison near the end of the piece from the point where the voices alternate with the flute onward. Ziemer is all over the place with short bursts and bent notes, battle goes for a very sweet light-hearted sound, and Sumi Jo goes with a joyful strength. Sumi Jo was my favorite.
Un oiseau du printemps, en ce 20 mars... Quelle voix splendide!
Amazing! I just love all her boundless energy, and how she captivates her audience with such ease, and professionalism. Not to mention her versatility....... Bravo, bravo!
Even though I've always loved Kathleen Battle's voice, I prefer Sumi Jo's performance of Voices of Spring, primarily, I think, because of her incredible vibrato, which really enhances this music. Of course, this is a personal preference: Some people dislike vibrato.
More than any other Strauss waltz, this one really requires the vocal part to reach it's full effect. Fruhlingstihmmen without a coloratura soprano is like spring without flowers. And Sumi Jo does an outstanding job of being the flower!
@Nautilus1972 Some Asian langues don't have great tonal distinctions (e.g. Korean). I don't think your overly generalizing statement explains anything here.
This is unbelievable! I absolutely love her rendition of this. I can't even put my finger on why. I just feel so happy watching her sing this. I couldn't even listen for the voice or technique the first time I was just smiling and bouncing with the music. She's phenomenal! And Strauss is a genius.
Matización: cuando digo "latinos" me refiero no solo a los hispanoparlantes sino a todos aquellos que tienen como lenguas vernáculas las derivadas del latin (romance)...Portugal, Brasil, Francia, Italia, Rumania y demás...
I've yet to see an opera singer on youtube sound horrible, I dont think its in their DNA, having said that, Battle is the queen of this particular song, watching her its hard to imagine she sung that live, it was almost perfect, Natalie hits higher notes, but thats about it, opear isn't just about hitting high notes every 30 seconds, but the lyrics in between.
IN the music world and where Opera is concerned, it seems as though we judge as best those who sing the loudest and highest. I happen to like both Sumi Jo and battle, however, Battle always seems more finessed to me.
Contrary to what robikske1804 says, I don't think its 'incredible that Korean people and japanese etc like so much German klassic music'.
Music is the international language. It has little respect for cultural, language and other barriers imposed only by our own stereotypes. I was brought up in the Caribbean, I now live in Canada, but the best classical music training I got is still rooted in the Caribbean. However, Canada provides much more opportunity to hear high calibre music of all kinds.
re music being 'the international language': not quite in my view. many cultures evolved systems that were not pentatonic-diatonic (12 notes/octave), and sound very bizarre to my western ears. chinese, i believe, is indeed pentatonic-diatonic, but still sounds 'out-of-tune' to me. robikske may have a point. having said that, i expect that nowadays oriental cultures are exposed to so much western music that it is perceived as more natural to them than vice-versa.
stronger voice than kathleen battle, also her german is better understandable, nevertheless both are great, incredible that korean people and japanese etc like so much german klassik music
I don't think that her German is better audible at all.Everyone is entitled to their opinion but did you actually listen to Kathleen Batlle's performance properly? It's pure joy and with Karajan conducting nothing can trump that.Sumi Jo is an incredible singer and I love her performance of Caccini's Ave Maria or Mozart's Der Hoelle Rache.
This is a lovely rendition, but I have to say that I like Natalie Dessay's interpretation more. But still, this is truly amazing. Her voice in the upper register is beautiful!
Jo is really not a heavy voice. Quite small actually. She isn't too heavy for anything! Lol. This isn't bad actually. Not really her thing, but certainly not as bad as you're making it sound.
i understeand what does she feel , when the video starts , by the expression of her ( lovely ! ) face! she has such a sensible voice, someday i want to dance by the sound of strauss waltzes!
Complete your phrase...why get edgy with a gentle correction?I accept others comments on some details I get wrong. Come on,a sure sign of intelligence is to accept with grace that we can all make some mistakes sometimes.Nothing werong with that! Cheers!!
I think the comment was made because the Fruehlingstimmen waltz was not written for an operetta but as an isolated piece of music so your "correction" was unecessary. The line between the two genres is barely discernable anyway, especially in regards to Strauss, so we really don't need to split hairs about genre with a piece like this. It's just good music.
Battle is sublime, Sumi is too! Gastonlegrand needs to listen with a happy heart so you can enjoy many perfections of the same music...hey Madeinthe try singing Korean! Hee hee
Her voice may sound good, but her German diction stinks. I am shocked, honestly, that a soprano of her renown would mispronounce all the umlaut's and ending consonants the way she does. Most of them fall in the middle of the voice, so she can't use the tessitura as an excuse. And yes, she and the orchestra are off, way off. She is singing it too heavy. It is about a lark and is supposed to be light and boyant.
Sumi Jo is excellent (as always), but I agree that it sounds as though the orchestra is not in sync with her singing...to me it sounds like the orchestra is going to fast and they're playing too loud. I believe the orchestra needs to be sensitive to the singer in order to produce a beautiful performance...they should keep tempo with the singer and not try to overpower the singer. But Im no expert...just my opinion.
well, I think her voice is powerful enough not to let the orchestra overpower her. I think the balance is actually pretty good. Her voice is so well controlled though eh? that's amazing!
Fortissimo25 exactly. Kathleen Battle sang this most beautifully, as she did almost everything else. Pity she is not with any of the major opera houses of the world. What a waste of a career. Despite the fact that she was a madam her voice is out of this world.
i dunno anything about opera, but kathleen battle sang like exactly with the orchestra, as if, i dunno, they practiced... sumi jo is good, but sings this too fast for my taste and she isn't in sync with the orchestra!!!
The conductor is at least partly to blame for being out of sync. In a piece like this, I'd follow the singer. Aside from the tempo, the orchestra is way too heavy and cloddish. She sounds terrific!
if u go to the kathleen battle version of this piece, the lyrics are there when u click on the "more" icon in the info section of the video on the right! :)
Clearly Kathleen´s voice is more beautiful and more expressive overall, and she does not push the higher part of her voice. Sumi Jo does a good job, but it lacks sheer beauty, and she ever so slightly pushes at the top. However she is also very precise musically.
I watched the original Stooges short that featured Christine McIntyre singing "Voices of Spring." You can look her up on Wikipedia-"Christine Cecilia McIntyre, a native of Nogales, Arizona, is mainly known as the beautiful blonde actress who appeared in the Three Stooges shorts from Columbia Short Pictures. McIntyre was also classically trained as a singer, having attended the Chicago Musical College, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1933.
Sumi Jo is beautiful, she sings so sweetly, you will never find a sweeter lady or singer anywhere, at least on this planet!!!!!! thank you for posting!
Ai yo, wo de ma ya, I always start crying when I listen to this woman sing. Especially when she did "Carnival of Venice" Thank you Smoothiw for sharing your treasures.
Video Response and the score have nothing to do with it. They just mean that people like Kathy's rendition more than Sumi's or that Kathy's clip was uploaded long before Sumi's. You said that Sumi imitated Kathy, but Sumi and Kathy just sung this waltz just as the musical note of this song. It seems more adaquate that both of them imitated or followed the musical note of J. Strauss. I think that you have never seen the musical note of this famous waltz.
THANK YOU... they are both just singing what is written. I find it humorous when people make comparisons without merit. Sometimes I think people forget that a composer spent many moons working on the score to a piece... singers just sing it. Period.
I like both of the two sopranos' renditions, but your acrimonious and unreasonable abuse makes me think that you are just a malicious and impetuous person.
If you listen to Kathleen Battle, you would love Kathleen better. If you listen to Dilber... you´ll love her the best...! light+ power+agility and good intonation... just perfect. unfortunately it´s not on youtube...
Ms.Sumi truly lets out the Voices of Spring. :) She is so pretty...

I have to say Natalie Dessay hands down

I like Sumi's voice but not in this piece. I prefer the version of Natalie Dessay.

I compared both: Natalie and Sumi. I like the two versions. One should not hold account of the poor quality of the recording.

Period.

Sumi Jo cleary imitates Kathleen Battle's rendition. But the charm and beauty of tone of Kathy is quite hard to imitate. Good rendition anyway.

Did Sumi imitate Kathleen? How comical! Have you heard of "MUSICAL NOTE"?
smoothiw 5 years ago
Comical? Check the video Response with the score and you'll get it.

I like both of the two sopranos' renditions, but your acrimonious and unreasonable abuse makes me think that you are just a malicious and impetuous person.

some like rose more than lily, some like red rose than white rose, i like both.

If you listen to Kathleen Battle, you would love Kathleen better. If you listen to Dilber... you´ll love her the best...! light+ power+agility and good intonation... just perfect. unfortunately it´s not on youtube...
