  • At least so far there have been no norway follow ups to my knowledge, but all of this is true for the coverage of that story.

  • With these Norway killings that just happened, this clip is so relevant, as it is exactly how the BBC are running the story as I type this.

  • anyone know where to find this actual clip? I want to see the whole interview.

  • welll u can blame the media, i mean they are scum after all, but it's just profiteering on their part, their just sensationalising because that's what sells. blame the majoirty of the general public for being retards, they're the ones who buy into it all.

  • 3 psychopaths watched this

  • If we are happy to blame things such as violent video games and violent films then why are re-creating news into a for of performance (reconstructions, videos etc..) why aren't sky news and co blamed as a source of encouragement for serious acts of crime?

  • @rowSseat21 They are being blamed for that, in this video.....!

  • @NicosNicosNicosNicos They don't get blamed though. This appears to be the only source available that blames the news stations for creating anti-heros. I recently read a book on the Jamie Bulger killers and each theory the author point at were video games, films and inner masculinity. The author, like many others failed to blame news channels and newspapers that had previously highlighted killers in the UK such as the Yorkshire Ripper, The Wests, as well as Hindley and Brady, and many more.

  • If you watch the full episode, just after this bit Brooker sighs and tells the audience to "go away" and bursts into tears as the credits roll. I know he faked it but it was pretty much how I felt after watching this

  • The mass media loves stories about mass murder and paedophilia, it sells newspapers and gets ratings for the news channels. The more the merrier as far as they are concerned.

  • @Athelstan12 bad news is good news

  • That last comment was one of the truest explanations about the media ever

  • And this is exactly what happened over the last 2 days after the Cumbria shootings :|

  • @Riktenkay And it's still going on about itnow to be honest. I still hear about it now In West Yorkshire on the news.

  • There is no profit in doing it his way.

  • watching the whole scenario unroll again with the Cumbria shooting.. I'm afraid they will never learn :'(

  • @whatsithair you're totally right. I've been watching the coverage of the Cumbria shootings today and I'm tearing my hair out.

    Extensive national coverage? Check

    Anti-hero style mugshots? Check

Making the killer's name infamous? Check

Bets on the next massacre..? 2013? 2016? sooner?

  • @petertrickaz

    well... there we go again!

  • @petertrickaz

    July, 2010.

we're seeing it with this wanker and his 'war on the police'

  • I like Brooker, he basically shows us that media saturation (as well as their pandering to the lowest common denominator) are what's turning the human race into a gibbering bunch a baboons hell bent on finding out what Posh Spice is doing for her holiday next week

  • the news channels are as guilty of murder as the piece of shit that pulled the trigger

  • @shakeythumbs Eh, no.

  • @shakeythumbs gonna save that quote. thanks.

  • these scumbags are quick to slag of Mcdonalds as junk food ,so what about junk media?

an endless spew of liesand exagerations

fuck they couldnt even report on the snow without some twat standing there claiming that 9cm of snow was actualy a foot deep! didnt they realise all i had to do was look out my window or step out my door?so what'll they make up when theyre reporting on something that cant be so easily challenged?

so pure unadulterated shit for the mind ...poison .

  • @shakeythumbs Too right! Dont know if you saw 'The Day Today' or 'Brass Eye', who brilliantly satirised the sensationalist style and content of news programs.

I think we've been guilty of granting the premise that our broadcasting news goes to serve informing the general public, rather than raking in the ratings.

  • @shakeythumbs Saying the news channels are as guilty of murder as the jerk who pulled the trigger is like saying it is the girls fault she got raped because she was wearing a short skirt and she obviously wanted it. The news people might make the problem worse by glamorizing the event, but ultimately it is some fuckhead who pulled the actual trigger and killed people.

  • This show really picks some great music to play in the background. Very effective.

  • Sad news is good news to the media. Ratings. Thats all it's about. The ratings.

  • As a forensic psychologist (not psychiatrist as Dr Dietz is) I can completely agree with what Dr Dietz is saying. The news are bastards

  • @IrishPaddy1 he has complete authority in the field - having psychoanalysed such cases as the mass murderer The Iceman for starters - so i would be doing anything he says if i were a media outlet!

  • I've been saying this for ages - every time there's a big shooting rampage, you'll find one or two "aftershocks" by copycats in the following weeks: Hungerford followed Julian Knight, Port Arthur followed Dunblane.

And wasn't it strange that in the two or so years immediately after 9/11 there were ZERO school/workplace massacres in the US? Up until then they were a fairly regular occurrence. Every couple of months some wimp would go nuts. Suddenly, that wasn't big enough anymore.

  • i think he said anti hero, like a clint eastwood character per say. does /b/ know about cinema?

  • trust itv

  • The answer isn't cenorship, it's common sense.

  • I thoroughly agree. I'm not saying that press concerning such violence should be censored- but for crying out loud, they should at least tone it down a bit.

  • Absoute poppycock. Obviously it's violent videogames and hip hop that causes these kids to kill... and that bird off of Britains got talent.

  • 5 stars and favourited.

  • Nevermind.

  • This is brilliant, Charlie Brooker pointing out what should be obvious but is conveniently ignored...

  • hmm, yes, quite

    utter chaos

you can't just let the proles say whatever they want

    it wouldn't be civilized

  • Ex-SAS Andy McNab has wrote about this before. His theory is that a shit life in general will just get to someone and when it gets to breaking point their motivation is to be 'an hero'(internet meme believed to be a cross between 'a hero' and 'anti hero'. The goal is not revenge, the killings are usually random; the goal is fame in death.

When the media reports like this, they promote the idea that YOU TOO can have this. You can be something in death, impossible in life.

  • 'an hero' actually just means suicide.

  • Top stuff.

  • Fucking genius.

Which must be why the media is still covering shit like this that happens for several weeks up to months after it happens.

  • Because people watch it.

  • Enter your text here

  • Bless you.

  • this is spot on

  • i reckon this is the best show on television at the moment.

well it was as its finished now ):

  • This is so true. But what is the answer? You HAVE to have free press, which means they will compete for viewers/readers, which nearly always means appealing to the lowest common denominator. If the 'people' were better educated, they would demand better standards in news and the Daily Mail etc would go out of business.....but a well educated, logical, decerning public would get rid of the greedy shits who run the country(s) double quick and THAT is why public education standards drop every year.

  • every multimillion industry needs a watchdog, but everything that they censor should be available for viewing.. online or something, just not aired on national tv and shoved down our throats!!

  • At this point they can show random youtube videos pingponging and it would count as good news. Point is that in the free market there's no quality control because we are stupid morond who eat everything whole sales - AND buy the shit they mention between programmes.

Oh wait I watch state TV in a commie country and I wish even that would state things straight out for once :'(

  • well said, well done.

  • I think he's brillaint, for ages ive been waiting for someone to bite back at these self agrandising, over bloated, hipocratic roling news channells and i have always been a fan of Brooker, so to see him attck them with such an elegant peice of what can only be described as counter journalsim is fantastic. Long may you reign Charlie and why the fuck arnt you on BBC 1?!

  • The Music is from Johann Johannson - IBM 1401, User's Manual.

  • This is a great comedian, mainly because he actually has something to say, you can learn things.

  • News Networks suck and blow and thy know just how to do it. Thy are pros as you may know.

  • good post!

  • lets stop watching the news...

  • Wow, that's weird, I've never really thought about this before. Very true, though.

  • Brooker is a fucking legend - best thing on tv. Funny/chilling and overall enriching. Everyone should see this episode

  • How is he simplifying matters? He makes it very clear where his advice is directed, at the news media, not the government. Anti-depressant drugs have no proven correlation with school shootings, beyond the plainly obvious fact that these killers are depressed and disturbed individuals. Neither do illegal drugs, which thousands if not millions of schoolchildren worldwide use each year without murdering their fellow pupils, and millions more adults use every day without going on a violent rampage.

  • Near perfect television.

  • PERFECT television.

  • Regardless of how much after effect sensationalised news has, it is rubber-knecking garbage. Im stunned, does the gargantuan media network actually believe they're seperate from society to get away with this or do they know exactly what they're doing? Im not sure which is worse.

  • "we expect to see one or two more within a week." that does not necessarily mean its going to happen again.

  • Expectation means that something is deemed likely, not certain.

  • You said it yourself:

"Where is the evidence to back up this statement?"

You question the statements made by the psychiatrist and then fabricate your own expecting it to trump his?

  • It's not exactly rocket science man. Not to take away from the psychiatrist, but it's pretty obvious that if you splash sensationalist 'news' about 'nihilistic pin-up boys' blamming up their schools then it's gonna become a part of popular culture and thus more frequent. Pity it takes a scientist to point that out.

  • Spot bloody on, Charlton.

  • Charlie Brooker is almost always sublime but this particular clip, the somber music overlayed to the psychiatrist going through what the media shouldn't do as he's clearly tried many times before, knowing what he's saying is falling on deaf ears...

    Magic.

  • Kostinsky J et al. "Threats of school violence in Pennsylvania after media coverage of the Columbine High School massacre: examining the role of imitation. " Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 2001 Sep;155(9):994-100

  • Anyone know the music used in this piece?

  • shouldnt our media listen to a forensic psychiatrist (and common sense) over their own pathological need for ratings and controversy? news isnt meant to be a drama, its real life. im glad somebody has finally pointed this out

  • unfortunately, the media's best interests aren't the general public, it's attracting as wide an audience as possible, just like every other entertainment show on TV. I bet they're 100% aware of the vicious cycle they've created - sensationalize one killer, brings in lots of viewers which increases the chances of a copycat killing, which also gives them more news to talk about, more viewers and another killer to sensationalize etc.

  • Was fantastic. He really outdid himself. Dermot M trying to convince poor people on telly to commit live suicide..what a knob-end. I may marry Charlie now.

  • This is so true, Charlie Brooker tells it like it is again.

  • completely nailed it

  • My favourite part had to be the Dermot Murnaghan segment, brilliant.

  • Absolutely spot on..

  • He's good, isn't he, the Brooker.

  • Came here via Glinner on Twitter - excellent report!
