I don't think it's so much an explosion as it is the air pressure. Sadly, the thing these people most wanted was more air (besides coming out alive of course). There would have been no air left and the prospect of breaking open a window in hopes of getting air would have been to good to pass up... unfortunately, breaking the windows open would have forced smoke out and air would have pushed in and BOOM, someone could have been forced out...like opening a door while a plane is in flight.
