Technically he left his shell cause one it was uncomforatable, or two it was either too hot. Or sometimes hermit crabs just leave their shell for no apparent reason then go back in, and its good you kept him in the sink, that keeps him warm and washes off excess substrate. I wish i can see my crabs changing shells, they havent changed since i have had them for about half a year. I have some really great shells for them I guess they just don't wanna change into the pretty comfortable shells :(

I remember waiting for DAYS for my hermit crab to switch into his new shell, since he clearly needed to. I wanted to see him out of his shell so bad. I walked into the kitchen, grabbed a Capri-Sun, and by the time I got back, he had switched into his new shell and climbed into his water dish. I was so pissed lol.

Hermit crabs will sometimes see a shell, check it out, discard its old shell and try it on, and then decide that they don't like the new shell, discard it, and then put their old one back on. Some also are just bullies, and like to pull other crabs out of their shell JUST to steal the shell, and a little later, the bully will decide it doesn't like the stolen shell, and then go back to their old one.
