James Fenimore Cooper in his (great!) book portrayed Maqua as a tragic man, torn apart by grief, bitterness and hatred for the whites, because of what they did to his family and people. Although mr. Studi is a very charismatic actor who did a great job, the scriptwriters could have made more of this character than they did in this movie.

The book was written during the French & Indian War, which made it that much more inspirational in US & English history.
Wes Studi is Magua... He isn't an actor playing his role but rather being the role no other actor could have accomplished. He is truly incredible. I also loved him in HEAT as Al Pacino's partner... Bad ass!

Duncan was sentenced to die first to give time for: Alice to beg Magua to also, take Cora as his wife. Or, during that time; another brave could have asked for Cora's life to be spared to be his wife.

Before her execution; Cora would have been forced to run the gauntlet. IF she was brave and exhibited valor; her life would have been spared.
Bloodlines were traced through the mother's clan. A woman who was made a wife or a child adopted as a replacement would have been formally adopted into the mother-in-law's (or the mother's) clan.
The idea of "total war" with the destruction of whole villages was an introduction by the Europeans.
The Huron/Wyandot were fearsome warriors. Wes Studi, as usual is a badass in most of his movies. I especially liked him as "Toughest Pawnee" The Pawnees are originally from my home state of Nebraska so I have a soft spot for them anyway. Wes Studi is one of my favorite actors.

Wes studi, aCherokke, had two tours of duty in Vietnam. His portrayl of Magua was the personification of evil. No was no other equal: Bruce Cabot, TVs Alstair Cooke presentation. There were others; however, none of them surpassed

it's an amazing movie. i have watched it so many times but still i want to watch it again and again. it's really amazing, and the soundtrack at the end of the movie when they r killing wes studi is really superb. it's a masterpiece. love it.

Wes is absolutely amazing in this movie. He is a fearsome Magua, much more evil than in the novel, and Wes is remarkably convincing. A great performance in a great movie.

Yeah I saw the movie in theaters when I was pretty young on Halloween... pretty spine tingling portrayal ha ha... I'm thinking he's a Tulsa, OK native or somewhere around here.

The Mohawks, loyal allies of the British, were at the Fort William and Mary. The chief was played by the actual chief of the modern Mohawk tribe. The Mohican tribe had been defeated and dispersed some 30 yrs before by the Mohawks in the English-Dutch war. The Huron people were allies of the French.
