@bibliophile232 Surely you don't think that any president has more than a minor effect on the economy. In Obama's case, his influence has dwindled to near nothing, thanks to a Congress that has made it a mission to impede any policy he tries to pursue. The economy will continue to suffer as long as we fail to correct the root causes: dismantled/unenforced regulation in the financial sector, lack of investment in infrastructure & human capital, & deficits fed by war & untenable tax cuts.
Good grief, the "my friends" really got to me. It was like he was trying to channel the pathos of Mark Antony in 'Julius Caesar', and failing horribly.
Tell me you later changed the word for the drinking game, because after the debate mentioned here.... McCane reeeeaaaallllyyyyy dropped "My Friends" a LOT.... oww
As a political science major and the Vice President of my university Young Democrats Organization- I played major drinking games during all of the debate too.
It was awesome.
PS: I wish I could have provided you with the joys of John McCain bingo before the election!
You inspired me to look up "McCain my friends" to see how many montages I could find. And they were plentiful. But my most exciting discovery was "McCain and His Vegetable Friends."
Though I liked what the candidates had to say, I got the feeling that neither were answering the questions directly and they were just saying what they thought the people of America wanted to hear. =(
On one hand, I think it's cool to see interest in politics, and I think John and Hank support Obama for the right reasons (they care about the issues and don't just like him because he's cool). But I have to admit that I feel isolated whenever I see another political video. It's hard to disagree with someone you really admire, especially on a sensitive issue like politics.

I don't mind politics.... but politics via youtube comments annoy me.
People, they support Obama. They can blog about Obama as much as they want. It's their channel. Part of nerdfighting is accepting people. Accept it and move on.
John, I want to go to your house and scream at you... a little less loudly than I want to scream at Hank. Normally I would not mind you guys talking about politics, I don't really care that you support Barack Obama because that's not what I watch you for. But you and Hank have been vlogging about how great Obama is SO often that I am getting ANNOYED.
I don't think it's fair to say someone is crazy because they didn't think Obama won the debate. It's judgemental. You're putting a negative implication on a human being that you don't know, just because they have a different political view than you do.
I would absolutely agree with you on this, except that I think he just added that to make a joke. I doubt that he really just assumes that people with different views than him (who he doesn't know...and hopefully even those he does know) are crazy.
I thought McCain did better in the actual debate. His Roosevelt reference was spot on. Then I got to thinking about it and what did he actually say? "I can do that", "I can get that done" and so on... His answer to one question was nothing more than: "Social Security - easy; Medicare - a little harder". So while I'm happy for him that he is so confident, I wanted to hear more substance. Overall, a draw.
Guys, guys... I didn't pass any tests to become a Nerdfighter and there are no requirements. I just decided to be one and that was it. I think hank and John will agree that this is bigger than them now. We love them and what they have to sat but we have grown to the point were we can support ourselves.
I always think the same thing, but Hank and John are good people, they are only expressing their views and while they might differ from some of their viewers I never see them PUSHING Obama on them.
They talk to us like a person who really likes him as a candidate, and who stands for what they believe in and think he can accomplish what he says but they never say: You must vote for him.
But yes! Join the McCain supporting Nerdfighters!
We are all Nerdfighters, political party shouldn't matter.
I definitely agree. I think it's one thing to talk about politics and make your views known, and another to push your opinion on other people, and Hank and John never cross that line. And to your last line: YES.
The funny thing about capitalism is that it works, "great" in theory until it becomes excessive and the government needs to nationalize companies like communists.
Also, 2/3s of welfare recipients are single mothers with no other recourse but to be on welfare as there is no childcare program that would free them to join the labour force.
Not to mention that the "Laffer curve," has never produced the increased government revenues that economists said it would.
3) I would rather have the OPTIONAL sacrifice of going to be a soldier in the war than having the MANDATORY sacrifice of giving away nearly half my income. HELL NO. I'm moving out of the country if Obama becomes President. Depending on how awful McCain is, I'll probably leave if he gets in office too. Why should I give the money I earn to the government?
wow, what happened to my comment? what i was saying was i probably won't vote for obama because, among other things, if he wins, my parents will only be able to keep about 30% of the money they make. they work hard, and they're not super rich people. it's just not fair.
Yes, but how many years was it not fair for the lower class? I understand you don't want your family to suffer but poor people have suffered for years.
I understand that point, but at the same time, my parents were not always rich. my dad was raised in a fricken tar paper shack and raised chickens, for goodness sake. They worked hard to get where they are. This way, it almost seems like people are being punished for pursuing "the american dream" of success.
Hey, commenters who complain that Hank/John are "biased" just because they like Obama; Give me a break! They're vloggers! They're allowed to have and should have opinions! You're just mad cause it's not yours. Obama makes a lot of sense while McCain usually doesn't. Deal with it.
I may be bias but every time I listen to Mcain he makes no sense to me and I stop listening... Bad I know because I should know both sides but I cant help it. He simply makes less sense than Obama.
I'm right there with you. I'm not a republican or a democrat, but I support McCain. I love the brothers, but sometimes they're a bit too harsh to what is probably a large group of their viewers.
Absolutely. I just wish there was some way they could make these videos unbiased. Like, I understand, the support Obama, but there's a lot of viewers out there who support McCain who feel like we're getting the short end of the stick.
For the record, I'm very enthusiastic about Obama, but I agree that it doesn't help us to make statements that are so obviously biased towards one candidate as John's was (sorry John!).
It doesn't help to say "Obama was awesome, McCain was stupid" because McCain supporters can say the same thing and there's no way to prove who's right.
I thought Hank did a marvelous job in his video of pointing out a specific example of something in the debate that showed Obama's superior candidacy.
yepo, but you can't take videos like this and base your full opinions on them. Yet sadly, many Americans do take satire as fact.
This video in particular leans more towards comedy as the first half isn't even about the candidates.
Statements without substance shouldn't really be taken as seriously as proven facts, but one's opinion on a candidate could and should make a difference, if only a little.
LOL John!! McCain did look he was lost. But not just regular lost. Blair Witch Project lost! (I have to stop with my dumbass 90's references, nobody seems to find them amusing...)
Sometimes I wish Tom Brokaw was the narrator of life.
I wasnt a huga fan of the one-minute-limit and trafic light countdown, but it kept them from rambling. The 'what dont you know and how are you planning on changing that' question was my fvaorite. CNN'S approval rating graph from from the live audience compleatly plummeted as soon as McCain started rambling.
Yes, CNN's transcript says 10 though. I don't know where all their "my friend" or "my friends" went.
I had to write a paper on reoccurring themes and phrases and that's why I happened to know that random fact off the top of my head. That would be sort of odd if I decided to count them for the heck of it.
On another note, I can't wait to see you in about five weeks in Racine, WI!
I know, but it's a funny little thing that my group of friends watching the debate got a chuckle out of. And no, I won't be in Racine, WI. I'll pry wait a day and go to Ames, IA instead-- much closer to home!
The debate was ok. I liked the first one a lot better though. The fact that they couldn't respond at length to each other due to the rules was just a bad idea. Plus McCain's joke's were so awkward I actually felt uncomfortable.
I think that politiconiac-commentating, shellacked John Green wins the debate. <3
...And that, my friends, is the fundamental difference between myself and the people who actually WATCHED the debate. :D [No worries, John, I've got it recorded--I just had, y'know, class and stuff to do.]
i would just like to point out, that its his OPINION. not him telling you all that McCain sucks. If you like Obama great. If you like McCain great. It shouldn't bother you that someone may dislike your candidate.
I LOVED the campfire lighting!!! It made me feel excited and slightly creeped out at the same time. Which is probably also how I felt watching Obama and McCain at the same time, if ya know what I mean. :P
your one of my favorite nerdfighters, and i love the nerdfighters, and i am aware most are Obama supporters, i'm also trying not to sound annoyed or rude. But some of us ARE McCain supporters, so I at least would appreciate if you could stop bashing on him.
i think the American people should be out raged that the networks wont let independent candidates participate in the debates.you all could benefit from hearing more than two opinions from what iv seen of the debates both obama and mccain have very similar platforms.
While I did not watch the debate I know there was a VERY big issue that was not discussed, Abortion. I personally believe Obama won the debate because this issue wasn't discussed. Not only is Obama for abortion, He also supports the killing of baby's that were born due to failed abortion. I believe that abortion is murder, But now we are talking about after the baby is born where it no doubt is a living creature, and Obama supports its death. Please, vote for someone who values Human lives.
I felt that McCain made a couple of Obama-pwning points ("Did we hear the size of the health-care fee?") but that in general Obama answered the questions more clearly and directly and awesomely.
I was EXTREMELY disappointed in both answers to the "zen-like" question at the end of the debate ("What don't you know, and how will you learn it?") Obama completely skimmed over it and McCain made some lame-ass response like "Well... I don't know what's going to happen in the future..." *eyeroll*
how weird was that? Senator McCain wandering around behind Senator Obama? At one point he was clearly connecting with someone in the audience through the ancient language of mime while Obama made his point. "my friends" was the phrase we were listening for. We were not disappointed!
everytime he said "my friends" I was yelling about how I am not his friend. Then I got sick of yelling and started throwing my flip flops at the tv when he said it.
I think a drinking game woulda been a better choice though... maybe next time!
Obama and McCain both lost they both ignored a lot of questions and started to go at each other
Akso they both denied reality talking about cutting taxes healthcare plans and babla etc
wtf did any of them watched the news the last month?
and obama is a little better on this saying that some thing should be delayed etc but i think he is far enough ahead in the polls to just be honest and say what impact the economic crises really has on his plans
It's odd. I originally heard the debate on the radio and I thought McCain was destroying Obama. I even had to laugh when Obama said that the government invented the computer. However, I come home and watch the debate on YouTube and was left with an impression of an Obama win.
It was Obama that said it. Just do a Google search. Regardless, the government did not invent the computer. The first electronic computation device was developed by John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry at the University of Ohio. ENIAC came four years later and was gleaned a great deal from the ABC device. History FTW.
The drinking games crack me up. My friends had one for the VP debate where they drank every time someone said Maverick or Palin used a folksy sounding phrase we had never heard before.
I think it's funny that you said that Obama is more qualified. I mean, seriously?! McCain my be old, but that's years of experience. He's not worn down yet, my friends. The my friends thing is kind of funny, but so is how Obama always says everything is the "most important issue". Come on Obama, not EVERYTHING is the MOST important issue. Someone should tell him that lying isn't a virtue.
I also feel like McCain is up there trying to be President for his country, not for his own glory. Obama..
ohmygosh! not only did i not watch, because i have no tv, i didn't even know there was one! i feel horrible. i watched debates during primaries, well... a debate. dang. but from what both hank and john said it was interesting.~
Shalacked because you drank every time someone said fundamental difference or my friends? ;) What about every time McCain referenced one of his heroes? Reagan Reagan Teddy Roosevelt Reagan Reagan Reagan.
Spoiler: Obama Wins

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!
It's just not FAIR that you're old and married.

I love how even though you're drunk you're still much more eloquent than several people I could think of are when sober.
RunningWithTheGnomes 3 years ago
the poor guy needed to tell himself the audience was his friends.
Jesska994 3 years ago
You're still pretty eloquent for having just come from a drinking game. ;-P
ellajobberknoll 3 years ago
The debate was ok. I liked the first one a lot better though. The fact that they couldn't respond at length to each other due to the rules was just a bad idea. Plus McCain's joke's were so awkward I actually felt uncomfortable.
CrossKnights 3 years ago
My friend had a drinking game for how many times McCain said "my friend" too.
But they drank water...so instead of being hammered they just really had to pee.
Yep.
Sunblam 3 years ago
My family and I played the same game, but included "Amerricans" with two Rs. The roaming senator was comical.
BarnBum12391 3 years ago
LMAO.. that's a dangerous way to play the drinking game.

hahaha i heard that too it was so annoying!!
obama obviously won! mccain looked very unprofessional.

also he said the "four corners of the world"
but the world is round idiot. XD
BillyAtAteThirty 3 years ago
oh my god! i wanted to mash his "my friends" too! im not yr friend!
BillyAtAteThirty 3 years ago
I think that politiconiac-commentating, shellacked John Green wins the debate. <3
...And that, my friends, is the fundamental difference between myself and the people who actually WATCHED the debate. :D [No worries, John, I've got it recorded--I just had, y'know, class and stuff to do.]
nerdra 3 years ago
I loved Tom Brokaw. That was amazing. <3
And McCain just wanted his milk and a nap!
soradsauce 3 years ago
Brokaw was such an ass. Obama shot him a "go to hell" look at the end, which I thought was special.
SapphireUnited 3 years ago
*Shellacked* lovely. I will have to remember that the next time I suffer through the magic of political tv.
I give McCain the award for most doddering candidate since Reagan.

i would just like to point out, that its his OPINION. not him telling you all that McCain sucks.

NurdyRhythm 3 years ago
ahaha you mustve drank a ton. I really hate McCain referring to me as a friend, because he is no friend of mine.
And that stalking! God it was like he always tried to be in the shot!

hmmm..tad bit risky subject, John
your one of my favorite nerdfighters, and i love the nerdfighters, and i am aware most are Obama supporters, i'm also trying not to sound annoyed or rude. But some of us ARE McCain supporters, so I at least would appreciate if you could stop bashing on him.
notfromaway12 3 years ago
Agreed in the most respectful way.
GreenyRoxSox 3 years ago
Remember, though, it's John's vlog. He's free to have his own opinion.
He calls it like he sees it.
kuroganeblack 3 years ago 3
Thank you, notfromaway12.
Some of us are just undecided too. I'm sick of Obama bashing and McCain bashing. All I ask is for talking about the issues not about who looked lost.

i think the American people should be out raged that the networks wont let independent candidates participate in the debates.you all could benefit from hearing more than two opinions from what iv seen of the debates both obama and mccain have very similar platforms.
CnCkEl 3 years ago
While I did not watch the debate I know there was a VERY big issue that was not discussed, Abortion. I personally believe Obama won the debate because this issue wasn't discussed. Not only is Obama for abortion, He also supports the killing of baby's that were born due to failed abortion. I believe that abortion is murder, But now we are talking about after the baby is born where it no doubt is a living creature, and Obama supports its death. Please, vote for someone who values Human lives.
jeffrey678 3 years ago
I was only able to watch the first hour and half, but I don't think either of them actually won.
Obama kept contradicting himself and McCain would get stuck on a point. Neither would really answer the actual question asked though...

drinking games are fun
dannye60 3 years ago
I felt that McCain made a couple of Obama-pwning points ("Did we hear the size of the health-care fee?") but that in general Obama answered the questions more clearly and directly and awesomely.
I was EXTREMELY disappointed in both answers to the "zen-like" question at the end of the debate ("What don't you know, and how will you learn it?") Obama completely skimmed over it and McCain made some lame-ass response like "Well... I don't know what's going to happen in the future..." *eyeroll*

if only we could vote for Tom.

LOL Wow...I need to hang out with your bunch during debates.
Tom was definitely a winner.
Starlysh 3 years ago
how weird was that? Senator McCain wandering around behind Senator Obama? At one point he was clearly connecting with someone in the audience through the ancient language of mime while Obama made his point. "my friends" was the phrase we were listening for. We were not disappointed!

I'm voting for Tom! Yeah!!!!
cindy7771 3 years ago
everytime he said "my friends" I was yelling about how I am not his friend. Then I got sick of yelling and started throwing my flip flops at the tv when he said it.
I think a drinking game woulda been a better choice though... maybe next time!
ratherpoetic 3 years ago
Obama and McCain both lost they both ignored a lot of questions and started to go at each other
Akso they both denied reality talking about cutting taxes healthcare plans and babla etc
wtf did any of them watched the news the last month?
and obama is a little better on this saying that some thing should be delayed etc but i think he is far enough ahead in the polls to just be honest and say what impact the economic crises really has on his plans
hypothetisch 3 years ago
It's odd. I originally heard the debate on the radio and I thought McCain was destroying Obama. I even had to laugh when Obama said that the government invented the computer. However, I come home and watch the debate on YouTube and was left with an impression of an Obama win.
So why does that happen and what does that mean?
LiteraryTorsion 3 years ago
Well, the government did invent the computer. That is entirely accurate. (Also, I think McCain said that, not Obama.) -John
vlogbrothers 3 years ago
It was Obama that said it. Just do a Google search. Regardless, the government did not invent the computer. The first electronic computation device was developed by John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry at the University of Ohio. ENIAC came four years later and was gleaned a great deal from the ABC device. History FTW.
LiteraryTorsion 3 years ago
Oh John.
Where would we be without you explaining it to us in more simple terms?
Thank you.
uknowwhatilike155 3 years ago
Tom Brokaw is made of win.
i definitely agree.
i wish i could have played a drinking game, but some people had biology tests in the morning :(
also john mccain looked like my grandma shuffling around the house and looking lost.
don't get me wrong i love my grandma but this is very true.

A drinking game...for debates?
... huhn...
(( btw the audio preview scares me....))
kiyoshi85 3 years ago
The drinking games crack me up. My friends had one for the VP debate where they drank every time someone said Maverick or Palin used a folksy sounding phrase we had never heard before.
SarahDavisSings 3 years ago
HAHAHA! you too? "My Friends" was spoken about 10 times and fundamentals was spoken by each candidate 6 times! LOL I was tanked.
TeleShaman 3 years ago
I think it's funny that you said that Obama is more qualified. I mean, seriously?! McCain my be old, but that's years of experience. He's not worn down yet, my friends. The my friends thing is kind of funny, but so is how Obama always says everything is the "most important issue". Come on Obama, not EVERYTHING is the MOST important issue. Someone should tell him that lying isn't a virtue.
I also feel like McCain is up there trying to be President for his country, not for his own glory. Obama..

lukeap 3 years ago
ha, Tom Brokaw for the win. I think you should have also had to drink anytime Tom had to remind them of the rules regarding time.
but I wonder if we can accurately judge who won the debate if a good % of those who watched were drunk for at least half of it... :-p
