Truth is the s.o.s note gets left out alot in the re-telling of Chris' story..I think that somehow if they admit that he felt in over his head at any point then it ruins the romanticism of the story..even so I still find his life and ideals very compelling an inspirational R.I.P Chris McCandless aka Alex Supertramp.
he's so down to earth. dicraprio or pitt or any other actor would just be over the top, bragging about themselves. but emile is really smart and down to earth, like a friend! and plus, he's not afraid to pick at his ears. XD 1:10
I think the drag of the movie is Escape or call it freedom, desire of which is deep rested in human soul. After all we are basically wild creatures. Movie focuses on one of the four things Man will always crave : MOKSHA ( in Hindi )
I STILL don't understand how Emile wasn't even nominated for Oscar or anything like Golden Globe... I think the work he made was extraordinary! I consider his performence like one of the best of the decade!
It's so unfair not seeing Emile being recognized for his amazing work in Into the Wild! And so Sean Penn, the soundtrack, the photography, the writing adapted screenplay...
But that's ok! Emile will have the opportunity to surprise us countless times! He's definitely a great actor!
@BAM5636 No, that was his farewell-not. The one i mean says:
Attention possible visitors
S.O.S.
I need your help.
I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone. This is no joke. In the name of god, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you.
@kearress I think, as a director you have to focus on certain materials to present to the audience in order to tell a compelling and coherent story. Sean probably ignores that note because he thinks it's useless to his vision of the story. I respect Penn's artistic choice, but we can never take a movie as complete truth. Go watch a documentary if you want truth.
Life its what you make for it... you car, cloth, wallet will never complete a life. Things are just that thing, they come and go. Remember the things you own, end up owning you.
im still convinced that emile with of course a different appearance set up, should play kurt cobain for the film, just watch a cobain interview, after watching this one, and u might see it the way i do.
@hashcr great comparison. Emile's gentle and 'organic' like manner definetly reminded me of River. Until I saw Into The Wild I never thought much of Emile, never saw any interviews with him or the like... now I have a new found respect for him, seems like he'd be an interesting and insightful person to chill with
I think Chris sensed, and perhaps knew from experience, that there was something evil about human love and relationships. Thus the only connection he could make was with a place, in this case the Alaskan wilderness.
i need to do this. leave my parents bullshit..ready to leave into the wild get my own apartment to know the unknown and stay comfortable numb..like sticks of flint..like paper dolls bang together at the hips..
Man, I just watched the movie and yes, it is "AMAZING!!!" I've just been thinking about it and doing research on Christopher McCandless for the last hour and a half, and I found that he lived in Fairfax, VA and graduated from W.T. Woodson Highschool in 1986... I live in Fairfax, and this is the highschool I currently attend! Also, he died exactly one day AFTER my birthday, exactly one year before I was born. His last words written in his journal are dated EXACTLY one year before I was born.
You know what... after watching this flick and just looking at it by the way it is done i really get kinda sick that such an amazing piece of cinimatic greatness not even got 1 nomination for the academy awards. Once again shows that the oscars are just show and most of the times mean shit!!!
one of the best movies i've seen so far. and epic music....soundtrack of my life...thx to eddi vedder and sean penn and emile hirsch for his epic acting
I partly agree. But i think the story is so damn inspuirational that it could have been done absolutely shitty and people would have still would have been in awe. Its chris. His story has changed my life. And the movie was done with respect, and done very well. If you didnt cry watching this, then you just dont understand the meaning.
It won a lot of other awards, though, and it was nominated for two Academy Awards, best supporting actor for Hal Holbrook and best film editing. But you're right, though. The Oscars have become nothing more than a popularity contest.
GREAT GREAT movie, great acting from Emile, I have NEVER cried so hard as when I saw the end, as a mom of grown sons myself, I can only think of how Christopher suffered. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends he made along his long journey.
yeah, a masterpiece by Sean Penn. The ending makes u suffer, makes u mad, makes u think about ur life, about being a better human being, and the purpose of our life. what is happiness? "Happiness Only Real When Shared" amzing phrase.
@helloaaron93 He didn't die happy-he wrote that the true happiness is when it's shared, but he died alone. Though, he lived the way he wanted, escaping from all the lies of the society, and this was probably pleasing.
I remember being 6 or 7 and hearing the story of Chris McCandless on Paul Harvey's Radio show. I must say that Emile Hirsch really helped put the face of chris to that story. great actor, one of my favorite actors on my generation.
I watched this film for the first time not so long ago and can whole heartedly say that this movie made the number one spot for my highlist of films to date, everything about it i rate highly, the acting and the directing with its enticing and charming story-telling...its beautiful!
the book however is much more greatfuling to say the least i mean i refused the idea of makin amovie out of it but suprisingly it turned out really good
Emile Hirsch has something very special about him that is indescribable with words. He made Chris McCandles come alive in this film and I am so happy he did him justice. Emile, if you ever read this I want you to know that I think you are one of the most talented and wholesome actors in Hollywood right now and I give you so many props for your how true you stay to yourself and how real you are overall. Keep making amazing films. Cant wait to see "Milk" and im looking for to "Living Woodstock."

Loved this movie!
MTERM775 1 year ago
I loved the movie.
In fact, I think it might be the best film ever made.
But I think there are a few things too fictionalized,
and for people familiar with the story, it detracts a bit.
Also, I think Emile, though he gave a fine performance, was miscast.
He bears no physical resemblace to Chris, lacks his intellectual depth,
and is not as prickly as Chris seemingly was.
Emile is too soft and lovable and huggable.
He's kind of like E.T. phone home.
wheelinthesky300 1 year ago
@wheelinthesky300 Yeah but if the main character of a film is 'prickly' then the audience won't like him as much.
I think Emile did a fantastic job of portraying a lovable & relatable character which is what this film needed him to be.
People get so anal about films sticking exactly to a book, it's an adaptation, not the book on screen.
joshurking 1 year ago
@wheelinthesky300 i don't think he lacks his intellectual depth.
