In a way you can say the Saruman made the same mistake as Hitler in WW2. He attacked two sides at once. Hitler attacked Europe and broke his treaty with the Soviet Union, causing his forces to be spread thin fighting on both sides. Saruman attacked Rohan and Fanghorn Forest, forgetting all about the Ents. Had he left Fanghorn there is a possibility he could have won in the long run.
