It was the cheesiest, most laugable adventure movie I remember viewing after my childhood.....and I would still prefer to see it in liu of the crappy adventure movies they have come out with lately, like the Clash of the Titans and Conan remakes....Hawk may have been campy, but at least they were not crap wrapped up like something better.
Been a long time since I have seen this movie. Now I remember a similar movie that dealt with a bowman that was cast out from a village I believe and he had a magical bow that shot arrows given to him by a goddess. Anyone else recall such a movie?
@WesOrion I remember this also. I think his father broke his sowrd in the beginning and I was pissed because swords rocked. Then he got the bow and just murdered everything.
@rollyhandz well someone in the office might liked the movie. I wonder if footballer John Terry might been mistaken to play Hawk. Or if Hawk The Slayer was mistaken to sleep with footballers wives.
@beansworth thats the book you idiot..sure the books describe legolas as an archer using a bow n a long knife, but it didnt say hes an acrobatic archer that jumps n shoot his way to victory..even the LOTR cartoon that came out in late 70's didnt show a very agile-acrobatic legolas like the new LOTR movies..so the jumping archer on 1:10 is the original corny jumping-shooting low-budget archer legolas..
does anyone remember a movie of this type ..in which one of the characters a RANGER of blue-green skin color ..used a rifle that fired arrows and the rifle used small gas globes that grew on trees as propellants ? ive been looking for this flick forever forgot name saw it as double feature with HAWK! everyone thinks im nuts!
@TheAUDIOARCADE It's called "Prisoners of the Lost Universe", also directed by Terry Marcel and featuring Richard Hatch from "BattleStar Galactica" and a couple of guys from "Hawk the Slayer", I believe.
I met Harry Robertson and Terry Marcel. Of course Harry is dead now. He was a great Scot with an amazing sense of humour. He never took himself too seriously. Best quote I ever heard was from Jack Palance himself. He told me (when he was alive) that he was awarded the Best Actor Award in Italy. When he thanked them, they said, 'no, thank you Mr Palance, you're the first actor to accept it!'. How's that for down to earth?
Long Saturday afternoons playing Dungeons & Dragons when I was a kid in the 80's, this was mandatory viewing on scratchy bootleg VHS to get us in the mood.
Amazing, in the late 70s I sat with my sisters and we watched this and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread? We we on drugs, or was the movie?
THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!!! i've been trying to remember the title of this movie for YEARS!!!! i remember being totally blown away by the automatic crossbow as a kid. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!! ahhh.. the memories!!!!!!!!
The movie looks silly now, but sound out in my early chilhood as the first fantasy LOTR type movie I saw..and the name Hawk caught my attention..cause I vaguely remembered that being the lead character's name.
Oh my God... Was trying to find this movie and failed because the only thing I rememvered was the elf Crow, but I didn't know his name, I only remembered his amazing skill with bow :) It's near to impossible to find an old movie with just such a remembering, when there are lots of stuff about many other elven stuff in the net ;)
@Esgorhannoth --I remember this movie on showtime when I was 5..the Elf Crow..I did not know the name stood out in my memory too due to the how fast he shot the arrows..I did not nor could not remember the name of the movie, but found it on Google by searching under early 80's fantasy movies with elves.
I punched a bloke in the face once for saying "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish. when what I *should* have said is "Dad, you're right, but let's give Krull a try and we'll discuss it later."
Wow! It's been years since I have seen this. I've lost track of how many D&D characters I had that I based on Crow...mad archery skills. As much as I love LOTR...I'd put my money on Crow over Legolas any day of the week.
I believe this movie is from 1980. I still have it on VHS (on a double bill with "Flesh + Blood"). The music reminds me kinda of "War of the Worlds", and if I'm not mistaken the giant was played by the late Bernard Breslaw, who also played Rell the Cyclops, in "Krull".
I once punched a guy for saying hawk the slayer was shit, but what I should have done was say "dad, your right, but lets give krull a chance and talk about it later
It's such a different world nowadays. Games back in the 70s and 80s often just provided us with a "template," a set of rules and guides, and we filled in the rest using our imaginations. With D&D, we created our own characters, even drew what they looked like, and pictured their actions as someone narrated. And who of that generation didn't play outside, acting as their fave superhero or warrior? Now kids are spoonfed "fun," little use of imagination.
Speaking more of Crow vs. Legolas, while, yes, Legolas is already familiar to many through the Lord of the Rings books, his introduction in the LOTR film is no match for that of Crow. It's still cool. Watching it, we have no idea who he is, what species he is, or what he even looks like. But he still comes off as cool and mysterious. As tight-lipped and monotone as he is, he still gives a cool performance, and some of the most emotional lines, soon before the big battle.
Here here! Some of the best fantasy adventure movies came out in the early 80's. I loved D&D, it was great for the imagination. I also recommend watching Dragonslayer, Krull, Legend and The Beastmaster
@criticaliron Ah, the good old days when I ripped off literally one-dimensional characters from low budget movies to use as characters instead of having an imagination
No kid should grow up without seeing this movie, same with Willow...
Saw this when I was like six years old, and blow me away!! SO MUCH FUN!!! And the soundtrack at the ending credits, just burns this movie in your brain forever... Love it!
loved it as a kid.... saw it recently hasnt aged great... but still great memoires, my favourite was the elf. Can anyone tell me if he dies at the end, it is never explicitly shown.
I tell you I was fascinated by this movie as a kid. In retrospect this movie was truly genius. If seen from today's persepective it looks cheesy, but there was nothing like it back then, and now it feels like all the fantasy movies of today as well as fantasy videogames have borrowed much from this old, barely heard of movie!
I mean, it's like "The first child, we shall name after the mysterious gods; the second after a bird flying by one time; and the secret third one after a sandwich I ate once. Thus the tales of Volton, Hawk, and Reuben."
