  • I had a double version, an 8 voice. I sold it in 1979. I got $5000 for it. It was seriously broken. Buyer was an electronics engineer. I had a custom built circuit from Oberheim to control order of selection on the modules. I was disappointed in myself that I did not make the music to which I aspired. However, these machines are triky. They go out of tune. They go down. Tune drift & maintenance got me. The good ol days werent so good. Ida rather of had a modern synth way back when. U all b happy

  • @SchoolofCartoons Modern synths do have an edge in the ability to produce a consistantly musical performance. The caveat being that the idea of "musical" is predetermined. My newer SEM videos rendered more of what I wanted to play rather than what I got from the 4 voice or even my PS3100 which was also hard to keep tuned up. Because most music media is now digital, only live performances benefit from real analog vs virtual.

  • It sounds slightly sozzled. I like his films which show fun with synths rather than feeling they must cover the music of a famous player who owned the same one. Surely the people who designed them wanted each player to explore and make their own musical journey? Names like Odyessey, Prophet and Voyager reflect this.

  • Friends, the SEM is back. It'll only set you back $900. Click on Tom Oberheim's site. As for Birdland, I bought a copy. The music is timeless, yet I wonder if Charlie Parker fits in there somehow. Interestingly, Oberheim and Zawinul were born on the same date 4 years apart.

  • sacrilegious . get someone who can play for starters.

then get someone who can program this synth if the person playing cannot. this is an amazing machine.

listen to weather report's "birdland" here on youtube if you want to really hear this synth. this video is grotesque.

  • I'll admit that I didn't make this video to be a world class performance. The synth as any old machine wasn't calibrated and I had to hold the camera with my other hand. It was just about the sight and sound of the unit, not homage to Josef Zawinul. The essence of Weather Report is their music not the axes used. Ire such as this only serves to emphasize a common human mentality. At some point we go back to the stuff we like and let the dross whither away. It's just a machine, not a deity.

  • well Kenny i liked the video,it did what u set out to do,and that was show, what the instrument could do.and no,no one is gonna mistake u for the late great,"Josef Zawinul".but i'll bet u weren't trying to be.i played a the "8Voice version of that munster, back in the late 70's,and i'll tell ya u will never forget the sound,of 16 independent osc's for as long as u live.and i have heard nothing like that synth since then.

  • I do admit my remark was a little on the harsh side.

I apologize if I offended. It's just that this synth is capable of SO much more than this. They are very rare and extremely expensive now if you can even find one.

  • chizmo7 go f**k off and make your own videos, you sound like an old bitter dude. What like everyone is suppose to play like weather report? you're just a hater get a life

  • "Just a hater"? You're obviously an uneducated dumb shit rap moron. What do you know about anything?

    Go F*#k YOURSELF!

  • Add a drum machine and try some electronic music...
