Following this band, Cecil Taylor & Max Roach performed their first European date. And, believe it or not, Ravenna Jazz was a pretty low budget festival...
this was not Steve's quintet, it was a band that I put together for the 1984 edition of the Ravenna Jazz festivals. In 1982 I had assembled a similar band with Roswell Rudd instead of George Lewis and Kent Carter instead of Arjen Gorter, that performed in Reggio Emilia and Bologna. Both bands recorded for Soul Note label. Few years later the band performed several dates (Reggio Emilia, Trento, Geneva a.o.) with Ernst Reijseger (cello) instead of Arjen Gorter (bass). It was great fun!
maybe someone posted this already, but the musicians are : steve - soprano, george lewis - tmbn, han bennink - drms, micha mengleberg - pno. Ihope that's a good guess!
"Terpsichore" is the name of the tune. Lacy, George Lewis, Misha Mengelberg, Horgen Gorter, Han Bennink. These guys did the first-ever record devoted to Herbie's music, apart from the composer himself, right around this time, "Change of Season."
