Gridlock, as I understand it, comes from the world of modern city planning (specifically, in NYC), where streets laid out in a grid pattern. Gridlock occurs when intersections become clogged with traffic so bad and at such counter-purposes that no cars are able to move. "Blocking the grid" is the act of moving into the intersection when it's already obvious you'll be blocking opposing traffic once the light changes. Anyone can claim they'll "crush [break] the gridlock"--but how?
