I wish she would publish a CD with that interpretation. For example I like her middle part playing more than the one of Alexis Weissenberg or Beresovsky. :)
@Choltik This is exactly right. Valentina is a great pianist and should be more well known and although she shines no matter what piece she plays, nowhere does she shine brighter than when she is playing Rachy. I think this is funny, because in an interview she once said that didn't play Rachmaninoff for a long time, because she thought he was too sentimental.Ha. We can all rejoice that she got over that!!!
I can't watch these videos too much, it makes me want to give up playing classical guitar. I pick it up to play and I can't make it sound anything like this, it's not fair really. When I am not jealous I am awed by her talent and Rachmaninoff's composing abilities.
@gwozdezzz You are such a hater. She doesn't play the second movement like no damn Chopin. It's always the one's who can't touch the artist they criticize that have something to say. Geez.....
Perhaps you would like to hear this on a Baroque organ, in keys well fit to the intonation.
As far as the piano in the recording goes, it sounds like the ideal piano. Sure it's tuned to equal temperament, but its equal temperament is practically perfect
I can never play this movement without getting to the point of welling up in my eyes. It is so emotionaly fulfulling to play and I agree with you on your comment.
Yes, I agree that Valentina could do real justice to the Horowitz/Rachmaninoff 2nd Sonata. Hope she changes her mind someday and performs it. She sure changed my mind about the 1st Sonata--I have never liked it until I heard Valentina play it.
Personaly, if she was to play it I would rather her play the original 1913 version. When I play the original and hear the revision I think to myself "what was Rachmaninoff thinking?" All of the other versions/revisions just don't do it for me.
I don't think that will be happening. She stated that there are already enough fine recordings of the second. I am just happy that somone can appreciate the beauty of this underplayed sonata.
She makes even this out-of-tune piano sound unreal! She's the only pianist who can make my jaw literally drop because of her beautiful phrasing. Amazing!
Valentina! i absolutely idolize you and your husband. You are beyond amazing. Greetings from Toronto, my name is Fiona and i love playing the piano. One day i would like to meet you!
Never heard this before - it's wonderful!

Your rachimaninoff 1st sonata is so good. Heard too many recordings which just too laboured.
Thank you, thank you and thank you.

@IAmMediocreAtBest I don't see you being jealous when you can carry your damn guitar pretty much everywhere.
Try getting the piano with you at the beach, or at the winter resort, a school party or whatever. Not fair, indeed, eh!
That being said, Valentina can sure make the piano sound magical enough to cause convoluted feelings ;)

very very good pianist, but again, also the second movement is played like Chopin, not like Rachmaninov.

What a pity the piano is so out-of-tune. Maybe that's why this movement seems rather hastily played, to get past those twangy moments!

(I say this because of mean-tone tuning)

This movement is probably some of the most heavy and tragic music Rachmaninov ever wrote.

I thought the 1913 version was for the Rach Sonata no 2, is there another version for the 1st sonata?
ijustretired 2 years ago
Valentina and her husband being two of the greatest pianists must have made a considered choice for versions.
Also others like Weissenberg chose this version.
