N-word used by Blacks is a term of unity. Of course the N-word was created by White racist for their obvious reasons. But, what does an oppressed group do with something like that. To take the sting out of it, they turn it into a word that they rally behind. This is no different than Latin people using the word Chicano. Chicano started out as a "negative" used against them they now use in the same way as the N-word. Bottom-line, we shouldn't use the N-word but I understand why some Blacks do.
Whoopi isn't understanding Elisabeth either. It isn't JUST part of african-american culture, it's part of the AMERICAN culture. I am white and it offends me to hear that word, because it reminds me of a time when PEOPLE treated PEOPLE with no respect, dignity, etc. Elisabeth has the right to just as many feelings as anyone else sitting at that table. We will always see race first then the person second if words like that are still used.
I'm african american.I think it shouldn't be used personally. I've been raised with a family that is an older generation and maybe that's just my mind set but I would not dare say it around my family and although people think its just a word the meaning behind it gives it strength that we shouldn't ignore. The only time older african americans who were slaves and use the word is usually an insult. That word is never meant to be a good thing
Im black and I can honestly say that it isnt uncommon for the N word to be used by blacks. Doesnt mean its right for it to be around and it doesnt mean it not right either. The good point of it still being used is the word was originally used as a weapon and now its powerless and used by the people it was designed to destroy. If a person of another race calls me a niger its going to get the same reaction as if he/she called me stupid or dumb. NO EFFECT! Its a word, it cant kill me!
@forbuss Whoopi and Sherri stated it was a word used against us (blacks) and now we (blacks) use it the way we want to use it. I work in law enforcement and Ive been called every name in the book including the N-word.YOU CAN NOT let words break you. Our ancestors didnt fight for our rights to just have black people break down because someone called them the N-word. HELL NO! Its not right to call people racist names but you cant let those names destroy you! If you do you just went back in time!
Whenever someone that incredibly stupid like Elisabeth makes the most sense in regards to the topic of the n-word, that's all there needs to be said of how screwed up things are within the black community. The n-word, regardless of what it's said and spelled means only one thing: hatred.
I have to agree with Hasslebeck, if black and whites, hispanics and other races want to be treated as one then fair enough, but you are still creating that division if you are saying to white people 'well you can't use this word because you are white', not that I would want to use the word but my point is that you can't have your cake and eat it too. I am a woman and I would never call myself a 'slag' and then say to a man 'oh you can't use that word because of sexist men were back in the day'.
Agreeing with a right winger like Elisabeth Hasselbeck pains me, but in this case she's absolutely 100% right. Until a line is drawn under the past and people of all races are held to the same standards of behaviour and given the same opportunities and entitlements, we will always live in different worlds.
White people did nasty things in the past, so now black people get to say what ever they want but no one else can? Fuck off!
@lokhryu By your comments you seem to be a racist yourself. Considering there are tens of millions of people with very light skin, I seriously doubt you've met many.
@lokhryu How many white people have you met in your life? I've only met one in my life, he was an albino. All humans, other than albino's produce melanin. This is also true of other mammals such as tigers and skunks. I don't know of any human that produces black pigment.
Lets see! What year are we in? 2011? This kinds of reminds me of the ending to the movie Higher Learning (great movie by the way) At the very end it has a message, "Still Learning" This vid makes me wonder if we'll ever learn? From Whoopi and Sherri's point of view, were not even close.
for the first time elizabeth was about to say something reasonable, and whoopie interrupts her. maybe this happened to her for all her life and thats why she became a rightwing tool.
no, seriously, this "you can say it but you over there can't" is idotic, if we really wanna be equal. what about a mixed race family? can dad and the dark skinned kids use it, but when mom does it it's wrong?
i have a friend who calls herself nigger, and i hate it, because of its origin meaning, and i'm white
@lokhryu No shit right? I mean those low life fuckers Elected a Black President and Watching enough Tyler Perry Movies to make him the highest paid man in Hollywood. And how fucking dare they watch enough Oprah to make that racist bitch the worlds richest woman, I mean black people are oppressed damn it, wait wut?
excuse me, white people, you are not allowed to tell a marginalized group which words they can/cannot reclaim to use for themselves. (and in this case, this goes for all other non-black people too. This is not your conversation, it's not about you or how you feel about it.)
I agree with Elisabeth, I'm Hispanic and I would never call myself a spec, or call someone I love a spec. Quit using words that bring back hate and pain.
this is a stupid discussion and whoopi is the only one on point.
there is nothing wrong with the word "nigger," the word never did anything to anyone, it's just a word. you do not need to worry about the word, what you need to worry about is the racist fucking asshole using the word in a derogatory context. same thing with the word "retarded" and "faggot." it's about context people not the word itself, have a seat yo
I am a black woman and to be completely honest I don't care if the word is used or not becuz in my opinion with or without the n word we will never live in equality until ppl are ready. With or without the n word a person can still say something to offend someone its just a word period
Im black and I DO NOT LIKE THE N WORD ITS DISGUSTING AND ITS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE TO ME if we use it whites will think its ok to use it I get whatboth sides are saying whoopi makes an excellent point and even hasselbeck although I dont always agree with her no on should use it
@onegaisti well i realize that they use it as a term of endearment and they feel that its gives them power i cant stop them if rappers, comedians want to use i cannot stop them but i can control what comes out of my mouth.
@rara1800 Well, I guess in that case everything will stay the same. For all the black children to be born in the future, this is your ancestors gift to you. The right to control white people from saying the "N-word"
I think its ok to say the word if ur playing and having fun, but if ur using it in a way thats hurtful than no one black white whateva should be able to use it!!!! Its basically how u use the word!
This is the ONLY time I will ever admit to agreeing with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Double standards are never ok.
I've never understood why a black person (I am also black) would want to us the n-word. Why would you want to call someone an insulting word that was used by the past oppressors of your race?
@myrage721 I watched the vid, and I still disagree with using the word. The basic message of the clip was, "it's not offensive if I'm using it in a different way", and in terms of the n-word, I will never think that's correct, as the word will always hold the negative connotation it did in slavery days. Sorry, but that's the truth, and us blacks using the word isn't going to help race relations one bit: it just creates a double standard that others can scoff at, and makes us look ignorant.
@LucidDivinity I think that we should go back to calling each other brothers and sisters. Those are real terms of endearment that can be used by anybody
I just love how things black people do become headline news. We spent hundreds of years being oppressed in this country and now our music, words, the way we dress, the foods we eat, and everything else is coming under scrutiny. How about the fact that the word nigga/nigger wouldn't be an issue if white people hadn't coined it for us in the first place? I don't agree with everything in the black community by any means but let's stop making black people into the enemy.
@VeggieTrunks See above, Negro is Latin Based for black, Nigger is merely slang and usually was not used in a derogatory manner. However I do always love the "we spent years being oppressed" really? As opposed to all the white people who had to live in filth? Who often would not be paid? Who were slaves themselves? TO the chinese who were forced to build underground cities? To the Japanese Americans who lost everything in ww2 and had to live in internment camps? Seriously dude, get a clue.
@VeggieTrunks Actually some the first hyper-melanin ( negro ) individuals got to become prosperous land owners in some northeastern colonies before the need for cheap labor motivated some colonists to buy slaves. Some of these black landowners were sometimes kidnapped and sold into slavery. Others joined civil groups and organization to try to end slavery or obtain freedom for those who were already slaves. However, most slaves were brought to cuba and surrounding islands.
There are many double standards in the world, positive and negative. My boyfriend can call me baby but if another man call me baby I have the right to get offended if I choose. Correct? And Baby doesn't even have a negative connotation. Bitch is a word women use with each other but if a man calls me a bitch, I'm going to have an issue. Double standards exist everywhere, they are a fact of life.
@LucidDivinity Thus shows the quality of education within America, Americans are brought up believing that that Negro (latin) is ok, but its slang form the most common used for decades (nigger) is somehow wrong. A prime example of this would be taking the word Nigger out of The Adventures of tom sawyer where it was not used in a derogatory manner and replacing it with "slave" which indeed would be derogatory.
@LucidDivinity agreed... elizabeth is right here. whoopi's logic is flawed. she talks about taking the word from oppressors and putting it in the hands of blacks exclusively. at the same time, people have fought hard seeking to ascend to a society of equality. this goal is opposed by restricting one from using a word strictly on the basis of race.
This white person has not been given a restriction!!! I would NEVER use this word to belittle or hurt anyone but I will NOT be told that I can not speak the word. This country is a free country with the freedom of speech and no one should be told they can not practice that freedom. For anyone of color to suggest such a thing is just plain stupid.
In Sweden we say neger (nigger) and white people use it and black people in Sweden use it. No one cares. It's HOW you use it! I can say to my best friend ''I love my beautiful nigger'' and she's like naww. But a female nigger in Swedish is not neger is negress :)
@@manoftomorrow79, It doesn't offend me. Why would I let a word used by anyone offend me? I also seldom hear white people use the word. And don't know of any music by white artist using the word "cracker". Can the same be said for the other word? Please tell me you don't know any black artist who use the N word because I'd love to give you a few examples. However I doubt I'll need too, EVERYBODY knows how widespread it's used. I don't use the word, but my world doesn't stop over words.
Saying "My mother couldn't vote" was moronic in the fact that if her mother couldn't vote it was because she was a woman, not because she was black. Blacks got the right to vote in 1870, women didn't get that right till 1920. So on the same day Elizabeth's mother got the right to vote, Whoopi's did too. Another case of racial discrimination being brought up when it had notrhing to do with it.
and equality. It also goes to show how we internally accept racism as well. In today's black America look at us compared to the 60s where blacks progressed even though we were oppressed. Until black people realize their own hypocrisy and realize that we need to move forward from racism instead of lagging around some hood that no human being and (yes we are human) deserves or is required to live in by the fact that they are of dark skin color.
using it as though it means nothing. Yeah I do agree usage does change its content and it is funny when people use it in a comical sense but overall it shouldn't be used in general in any situation. And the fact that Woopi and Shepherd don't realize this as well as 70-80 percent of the black community today use, accept, and even EMBRACE this word is a shame to me, a shame to Martin Luther King, a shame to the civil rights leaders, as well as our ancestors who fought dearly for our rights
Out of all the people on this show I love Elizabeth the most in this position. Since I was young, I was also taught that this word is offensive and was damaging and hateful towards our history, but the more I grew I noticed how my own people and heritage also said it. So when I went to school kids also said it thinking it meant no harm, but I would never say anything in reply because I would have to explain the history and it would make me cry. But how can I say that when my fellow people are
I am white, and I never did and I never will use that word, because its just not how I talk, but here is what I would like to know.
I get that there were times when withe people used that term to insult black people, which obviously was despicable, I am just wondering if by any chance a white person says that word to a black person, like "whats up N" does that bring back pain, does that hurt? altough you can be a 100% sure that the person who said that likes you and doesnt mean any harm by that?
@Th3Individual naturally you don't comprehend common sense Th3Individual and your lying to yourself. If you think that if blacks say it to each other it means something completely different. Than if non-blacks say it to someone who is black bottom line it's a word of hate no one should say it. You don't see whites calling each other 'cracker' because we'd be offended just as much as if it were someone who wasn't white.
@manoftomorrow79 Agreed, agreed, agreed. Saying "my mother couldn't vote..." in a time when the President of the United states is Black is not only a laughable but extremely idiotic argument. Black people as a community need to figure out WHY they feel the need to use this word. If it's degrading, it's degrading, but to try and pretend like we have some secret meaning-which we don't-just internalizes the negative connotations that came along with that word to begin with. Stop saying it. Period.
omg i'm gonna slap this bitch across the face r u fucking kidding me!? why the fuck is she cryin for?! this has snothing o do with that chick
"if someone said to me your a dumb polack it offended me, so i wouldn't use that to myself so i don't understand why the nword" blablablablablahhh ARE YOU SERIOUS! PLEASE TELL ME SHE IS JOKING IS SHE SERIOUSLY COMPARING BEING CALLED A "DUMB POLACK" TO THE N WORD? Oh lord have mercy...
The hood/ghetto and the suburbs ARE two VERY different worlds. Some black people use the n-word, some don't, just like some white people use the n-word, and some don't. Keep it moving, because it's a never ending debate that will never find a common ground where everyone agrees. Just know if a white person (or any person other than one of african descent) walked up to me and called me a nigga/nigger to my face, violence will ensue.
1:47 - 1:51 = total lie. Whoopi and Sherri are completely wrong and stupid to say. That saying the n word means something completely different to them. Compared to someone else who isn't black that says it to a black person. The point is it's a word of hate when blacks say it to each other it's still a demeaning word. It's either a word that offends you or doesn't offend you can't have it both ways.
I'm sorry...but every single video I see with "The View" crew...Elizabeth is just an uptight, pain in the ass, and once again, I just don't agree with her here. Her "we don't live in different worlds" comment is *way* off. Whoopi's right...even today, black people deal w/shit. Still today. Nothing wrong w/black people using "N" as a term of endearment. Being a gay man, I totally hear what she is talking about.
...emergency. Like oh lordy no some1 said the n-word & they werent black, procedure dictates we talk about it on the news for 3 weeks, right after the full court press. If some1 calls me a cracker I just feel sorry for their obvious ignorance. Why cant that be the end of it if the scenario were flip-flopped. And dont give me that 'u'll never know what its like to be called that as a black person' crap, as if white people are somehow immune to ridicule
@mikedd56 Because white people made up the N word! They can think of a name for the rest of the racist here and use it in a derogatory fashion. Heck yeah we would have an issue w/ any white person calling us the N word. The N word and cracker definitely do NOT carry the same weight. IGNORANCE
I know they dont carry the same weight but thats my point, wouldnt we ALL be better off if it was just another word & if used people would just say shame on him. U do know the whole argument is totally flawed. Its like if a group of girls at a school dressed real skanky & all called each other dumb whore out loud in front of all, then some1 says 'hey dumb whores' & they all start cryin & make a huge fuss & call the local news stations to report it while every1 else is like, huh?
@mikedd56 It does happen with the b word! Girls say it to their friends but if a man says it, it's highly offensive. White ppl use it and it hurts! That term was used towards slaves and it is RACIST. We put it on the news b/c ppl cnt believe ppl still are THAT racist in 2011!
No matter what u say its all bullshit. If black people really wanted to strive for equality they'd agree that no1 should use the N-word, and most do agree. Its just whiners like Whoopi who go ballistic if any1 uses the word publicly & whine about how things arent equal yet passionately defend the using of the word as long as we discriminate against who gets to use it. Whoopi is just selfish & doesnt want to give up the right to whine about black grievances
@mikedd56 She's selfish? Why do you want to use it? Yes, people do go ballistic and they have the right to because it is very disrespectful. No one is whining, they are standing up for themselves. PERIOD. If you don't like it, oh well...try being black and being called the n word and see how your reaction would be. Since you cannot, you should try to be sympathetic. And the fact is, most ppl do not disagree to the usage of the n word. Foolishness!
I don't want to use it! I want equality for all but this whole 'we can use it but you can't' argument is counter to that goal. Do u honestly think Whoopi calls all her friends the N-word? No! W/e her view is its her job to disagree w/ Elizabeth. This argument has been repeated a million times & it only serves to divide people by race & cause bitterness, the only message seems to be 'black people are perpetual victims & white people are always the enemy' what good does that do
GET A GRIP! The only thing its used for is expressing hatred or in a way thats linked to violence by thuggish rappers or gangsters. Its not a term of endearment! Whoopi u say it only has the power its given, SO STOP EMPOWERING IT! You sit there & defend the use of such a negative word, that it must be used by comedians & rappers(known for their endearing use of the word) but then god forbid an unauthorized use of the word occurs & automatically its a national..
when you people use that word you use it in different term wich is a term of hatred you people have been using it to put blacks down. now blacks use it in a more loving term and friendly way among themselves. but you people use that word with a lot of hatred even when you sound friendly with it, no body would believe you because they know you're not using it in a friendly way deep down inside.
At the black people who give this argument, as Whoopi just did, because it makes NO sense. For her to say "Here's how we do it..." and go on to explain that white people have to DECIDE that they are not going to use the term as though they even have a choice...knowing full well that if a white person even says something that SOUNDS like the "n-word" the whole room full of black people would pummel them...This is one of the reasons why the black community is suffering: illogical logic...
Who do not want that word attached to there feminine sex. Therefore, I don't call my girls that, and I don't want other people calling them that, and when a man calls me that it offends me. Therefore, the only African-Americans who can use this reclaim argument are the ones who are not offended by whites saying it either. Otherwise, there is no reclaiming going on. Either you find the word offensive or you don't. And as far as I'm concerned, if I was a white person, I would have to laugh (con.)
Still cause them to be so enraged if a white person says it. Whether a white person says nigger, nigga, negro, or any variation, it still causes black people to become visibly, verbally, and violently upset. So, this is why this whole "reclaiming the word" argument makes NO sense to me. It's like the word "B****". There are some women who call each other b**** and let men call them b**** as well. These women have "reclaimed" the word. However, there are other women, such as myself (con.)
Imma go ahead and comment on this, I am black, my momma black, daddy, etc. And I am so SOOOO SOOOOO sick and tired of people talking about this n-word. The thing that I will say is that while I can understand what Whoopi and a lot of African-Americans are saying about "reclaiming"-not to say that I agree with it-but simply that I understand WHAT they mean...However, Black people are actually NOT "reclaiming" the word and turning it into something positive. IF they were, then it wouldn't (con.)
Also I think that crying by Elizabeth is fake, and if it isn't, it 's pretty stupid to cry about something that has nothing to do with you. Deep down shes just crying about how it seems wrong for white ppl to use the N word, but Black ppl can use it freely when ever they want. This is just the White Mans burden, they have to control every thing thats done. If the White Man can't do it no one can. That's the whole reason for this controversy, which pisses me the fuck off. Again MYOB white ppl.
I think that the N word is an ugly and rediculous word. Americans are supposed to be EQUAL Whether you are white black grey yellow red pink purple whatever color you are. I think it is horrible that ANYONE uses that word. How is it fair to say Oh I can say this word but you can't because your a certain skin tone and vice versa. It is really stupid I honestly wish that word didn't exist. It is such a STUPID word and no one should use it. I completely agree with Elizabeth.
@Jeane935 My friend's grandad's friend tried to explain the difference and you know what? He couldn't! The reason why, I'm guessing because there is no difference.
Im hispanic and I havent grown up in the US but I live in NY and I remember going to a public high school and EVERYONE used N-word even my friends and its really not an issue for me and it never became one I understand the politics of empowerment and while I myself wouldnt use that word because for me there is absolutely no reason to but Im not gonna cry about correcting others from using it its their way of coping with the world and I think elisabeth had a point but it came out as condescending
I hate to sound racist, but why do white people like Hasselbeck hate being told no. It really is this simple: there is the illusion of colorblindness in this country so that people like here, can say that all is fair and equal, but guess what...it's not. As a group that has been oppressed and continues to be oppressed in this country, being able to take the words that have spurned hate and turn them into something powerful, while excluding the oppressing group is empowering.
some would say around 90% are naturaly evil, I would say that's abit much, I think around 60% are naturaly that way due to being educated and brought up to believe there's always something to conquer or oppress untill it becomes a part of their subconcious.
I also say 60% because if it was 90%, realisticly alot of massacres would be going on in the west, again.
black people think they are so damn powerful they they are using the word that was used against them years and years ago. It is such a meaningless word now, they need to get the chip off their shoulder and realize THEY HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE! Whoopi is such an incredible doushebag for thinking that blacks lives in different worlds. Horseshit, your equal now. Get in the game and realize your rights and world are the same as others.
@DrDewofCovtown First, you can't just say "black people think they are so..." as if all black people think and feel the same way. Second, Whoopi is right in that it's still not equal now. You just have to take a drive down to certain areas of the south to take note of that.
@DrDewofCovtown as a black person, I get laughed at just for telling other blacks the goals I have just to be successful & less of a stereotype. you don't seem to understand that if you were a white person describing your plans for success, there's a 1% chance that you'll get a laughed for having them so blacks & whites STILL DON'T live in the same world because less blacks within the household are getting motivation to succeed than whites that are getting it
Why is Elizabeth getting so emotional over the n word? I'm just a white guy and I don't understand why other white people get so emotional about the n word. They say " well black people can say it but we cant" whaa whaa . First of all, why as a white person do you want to say that word? It's just weird to me. Black people use it now as part of their culture. They don't say it in the same way as white people used to. Why can't other white people understand that?
@rmc21586 Because it's about control, no offense but there are still alot of white people that can't get over not being allowed to oppress like they used to, so they find other ways, but it always comes back to, 'why can't we call them this?' or 'why can't we do this to them?' or 'they just have a chip on their shoulder'.
A chip of destructive history with many races attached to it.
deep down alot of them want it back, which makes African Americans think that most whites are naturaly evil.
@rmc21586 man i love dis comment so much yu just made me feel great no homo lol if yu have a facebook mine is Mike louiev Benz holla at me cus yu da coolest white dude ever
Maybe I'm wrong but I think it's more of a power or control thing. The idea of not being able to say something that black people can say or being told that they can't do something because they're white doesn't sit well with some white people. I think those particular people understand the social and historical reasons but just feel they should be entitled to do it anyway.
@rmc21586 Elizabeth isn't complaining about not being able to use it. The point she's making is it's a word that shouldn't be said by anyone. The fact that some blacks claim if they say it to each other it means something totally different. But if someone who isn't black says it to them it offends them that makes blacks look like hypocrites. The n word was created as a word of hate there for it shouldn't be said by any race.
Whoppi makes sense, because Elizabeth is looking at a suburb view of educated and "perfect" enviroment. Where Whoppi is looking through the reality of the suffering and discrimination of minorities. We are rasied calling each other derogatory terms but when a white person does it, it is offensive beacuse for them is another meaning.
whites & blacks don't live in the same world. i wish it was that why but it isn't. me as a dark skinned 14year old girl (i live in sweden, and was born here) i have o be careful it sucks but i's true! you never know when people are treating yu bad just because of the color of ur friggin skin..
Believe me i understand your plight. You just continue to shine in your own right and with PROGRESS and enlightenment we can look forward to a world where skin color will be mean nothing. Sadly, I think it matters most to our whiter brothers.
BRAVO to Whoopi for actually saying that we live in different worlds. I come from an immigrant family, I have dual citizenship, and I will NEVER entirely fit in with my peers who were raised in america but american families. Of course there are some cultural words I get pissed off with americans for saying. They don't have the right to do it, but it's second nature for me. Do I then not have the right to use them because I don't want others to? I can see both sides, but I agree with Whoopi here.
I have loved Whoopi but find that she rams her opinions down everyones throats and talks aggressively over everyone. Don't think I can stand to watch the View anymore.
@megan23100 it's the same thing with elisabeth! when she gets her point across and it's someone else's turn to speak, she always interupts and is raising her irritating voice and thinks she's always right.
I can see both sides of the dialogue here and they both bring up valid point, but I do side more with whoopi about "taking back" the word. Im a young white gay male and I know a lot of other people who identify as gay use the word f*g as a term of endearment. I personally don't try to use that word because it is ugly and does harbor a lot of pain, but when we use it, it takes that power away from that word. And that is what Whoopie is trying to express
I don't know why us white folk get so caught up in this. Just accept it's a word we can't use - If one of my mates came up and said 'I'd get really offended if you called me 'insert word here', then there's no way I'd ever bring that up.
And to be honest - can anyone actually think of a practical use for bringing up the 'N Word' (from a white persons view) other than to inspire hate or take the piss? Why would you even need to use that word in modern society for any other reason?
i can understand elisabeths point of view as a black person and i cant say i dont agree and to be honest the proble is this no black person will eber let any white person tell them they cant use the nword
Exactly. I think Hasselbeck is 100% correct. This should never be used and it shows how shallow-minded people of color/non-whites are. Honeslty, it IS NOT THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN--IT IS THE SHIT ATTITUDE OF MINORITES IN THIS COUNTRY THAT LEADS PEOPLE TO DISLIKE THEM.
Dumb ass ignorant white people. Nigga is like saying 'dude' in the black community. "Hey dude, what's up?" translates to "Hey nigga, what's up?" "Look dude", "Look nigga". It's a word that's in the black vocabulary. It's obviously something white people don't understand so it's something white people should stay out of and shut up about.
The way I look at it, that's a word that was meant to demean and abuse black slaves. Can YOU imagine living in a country that at one time treated you no better than a dog? No. There should not even be a debate. I'm white, and I respect the N word and black people enough to let them use it how they need to.
@silverbogie I assume you can't continue an intelligent debate for too long. I will continue to say this as long as I need to: If you believe in what you say, instead of just being right, there's no need to talk so rudely to people. If you get frustrated so easily with everyone who disagrees with you, you don't yet have the tools to discuss these topics maturely.
woopie you look like a true N word here... there is 1 world.. but only time will tell.... we will have older people involved with those times of slavery... thats why the future is better then the past... the more time goes on the more stupid black people look for using the word... lol you got rights in the early 90s.. and you act like 2010 isnt equal.. the fuckin president is black.. bye
It wont end for another couple centuries cause parents keep saying it front of their children and kids keep saying it at school...they think its cool to say it in front of white people when they shouldnt even be using the word... they have nothing to do with the word but wanna keep it around.. as if it will benefit them some how... seriously it wont stop until the future kids finally stop using the word and dont say it around the children... also by MAKING IT AGAINST THE LAW TO SAY THE N WORD
If u can have fun with it all can... Rest is hipocracy
To make it equal, make it equal
I do know that in America that word has a long history behind it, but its a commen history. go equal on it already =P
My history acording to blacks where im from is totaly diferent. and here i do use it. like, "do u c him he is cute" - "who" - "him the n-word over there" to me erasing that last sentence and make it " then black guy over there" sounds far worse...
as a mexican, I understand where whoopi is coming from, to an extent because when my family says the word "wet back" it has a different meaning than when a person of another race says it. I guess the same can be said for black people when they use the n word.
But in the end both words are racial slurs, originally aimed at putting down blacks and mexicans
As a racial minority, I completely understand Sherri and Whoopie's point. I mean in a White person's standpoint it would be hard to understand, but like they said when a White person says it and a Black person says it, the N word changes its meaning. Imo it's exactly the same with the F word for Gay people and Straight people.
I noticed when you referenced the word, "nigger", you made sure to note that it is wrong to say it to a black person. Then when you referenced, "nigga" you were very general and vague as far as who you say it to.
I'm just curious, do you feel is it ok to use the phrase, "my nigga" to a black person, who is a friend?
It wasn't so long ago that the term 'woman' was rude. Now woman is accepted as a normal word. We can use it as a term of endearment. This is what is happening with the words nigger, bitch and other swear words. They are slowly becoming regularly used words so eventually they become less and less offensive. Its what naturally happens with our evolving language but people are going to continue to debate it, in the end 50 years from now these words may just be a normal way of refering to people.
First off what I see here is a total misunderstanding. There is a difference between (excuse me for the use of the first word) "nigger" and "nigga". There is also a difference in how you use them. You walk up to a black person and say "Hey NIGGER" you are in the wrong. However, walking up to a friend or someone you know and saying "Wassup my nigga" should not be that big of a deal. There really is a difference in the context and in the actual word itselt.
Elizabeth is right. The fact is, we as culture bring back that hate everyday. The Sole Awards, History months...what about struggles that we have all been through? If there was an awards show for music, TV or movies that only White presenters, nominees and performers were at..people would loose their minds, and that is a fact

We will always see race first then the person second if words like that are still used.
forbuss 1 month ago
I'm african american.I think it shouldn't be used personally. I've been raised with a family that is an older generation and maybe that's just my mind set but I would not dare say it around my family and although people think its just a word the meaning behind it gives it strength that we shouldn't ignore. The only time older african americans who were slaves and use the word is usually an insult. That word is never meant to be a good thing
madl55 1 month ago
Im black and I can honestly say that it isnt uncommon for the N word to be used by blacks. Doesnt mean its right for it to be around and it doesnt mean it not right either. The good point of it still being used is the word was originally used as a weapon and now its powerless and used by the people it was designed to destroy. If a person of another race calls me a niger its going to get the same reaction as if he/she called me stupid or dumb. NO EFFECT! Its a word, it cant kill me!
pdxjason503 1 month ago
@pdxjason503 But it DOES have an effect, thats what Whoopi and Sherri are saying.
forbuss 1 month ago

The word nigger is one of many abbreviated slang words for the word negro meaning black.
Nigger represents ignorance of the etymology of the word negro.
Words evolve over time as people migrate to and from different land regions.
Keep in mind most people of the 18th and 19 century didn't know how to read or write.

This is the ONLY time I will ever admit to agreeing with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Double standards are never ok.
I've never understood why a black person (I am also black) would want to us the n-word. Why would you want to call someone an insulting word that was used by the past oppressors of your race?
LucidDivinity 7 months ago 27
@LucidDivinity type in- KRS ONE speaks on the n word, and maybe then you will get a better understanding.
myrage721 6 months ago
@myrage721 I watched the vid, and I still disagree with using the word. The basic message of the clip was, "it's not offensive if I'm using it in a different way", and in terms of the n-word, I will never think that's correct, as the word will always hold the negative connotation it did in slavery days. Sorry, but that's the truth, and us blacks using the word isn't going to help race relations one bit: it just creates a double standard that others can scoff at, and makes us look ignorant.
LucidDivinity 6 months ago 8
@LucidDivinity I think that we should go back to calling each other brothers and sisters. Those are real terms of endearment that can be used by anybody
PurpleShades1 6 months ago
@LucidDivinity
VeggieTrunks 4 months ago
@VeggieTrunks See above, Negro is Latin Based for black, Nigger is merely slang and usually was not used in a derogatory manner. However I do always love the "we spent years being oppressed" really? As opposed to all the white people who had to live in filth? Who often would not be paid? Who were slaves themselves? TO the chinese who were forced to build underground cities? To the Japanese Americans who lost everything in ww2 and had to live in internment camps? Seriously dude, get a clue.
LongRangeAce 3 months ago 2
@VeggieTrunks Actually some the first hyper-melanin ( negro ) individuals got to become prosperous land owners in some northeastern colonies before the need for cheap labor motivated some colonists to buy slaves. Some of these black landowners were sometimes kidnapped and sold into slavery. Others joined civil groups and organization to try to end slavery or obtain freedom for those who were already slaves. However, most slaves were brought to cuba and surrounding islands.
chroniclerofthe70s 3 months ago

SlayerofFiction 3 months ago
@LucidDivinity
VeggieTrunks 4 months ago
@LucidDivinity Thus shows the quality of education within America, Americans are brought up believing that that Negro (latin) is ok, but its slang form the most common used for decades (nigger) is somehow wrong. A prime example of this would be taking the word Nigger out of The Adventures of tom sawyer where it was not used in a derogatory manner and replacing it with "slave" which indeed would be derogatory.
LongRangeAce 3 months ago
@LucidDivinity agreed... elizabeth is right here. whoopi's logic is flawed. she talks about taking the word from oppressors and putting it in the hands of blacks exclusively. at the same time, people have fought hard seeking to ascend to a society of equality. this goal is opposed by restricting one from using a word strictly on the basis of race.

And the fact that Woopi and Shepherd don't realize this as well as 70-80 percent of the black community today use, accept, and even EMBRACE this word is a shame to me, a shame to Martin Luther King, a shame to the civil rights leaders, as well as our ancestors who fought dearly for our rights
ogechinigerian 8 months ago
Out of all the people on this show I love Elizabeth the most in this position. Since I was young, I was also taught that this word is offensive and was damaging and hateful towards our history, but the more I grew I noticed how my own people and heritage also said it. I am white, and I never did and I never will use that word, because its just not how I talk, but here is what I would like to know.
I get that there were times when withe people used that term to insult black people, which obviously was despicable, I am just wondering if by any chance a white person says that word to a black person, like "whats up N" does that bring back pain, does that hurt? altough you can be a 100% sure that the person who said that likes you and doesnt mean any harm by that?
cariiina19 8 months ago
@Th3Individual naturally you don't comprehend common sense Th3Individual and your lying to yourself. If you think that if blacks say it to each other it means something completely different. Than if non-blacks say it to someone who is black bottom line it's a word of hate no one should say it. You don't see whites calling each other 'cracker' because we'd be offended just as much as if it were someone who wasn't white.
manoftomorrow79 9 months ago
@manoftomorrow79 Agreed, agreed, agreed. Saying "my mother couldn't vote..." in a time when the President of the United states is Black is not only a laughable but extremely idiotic argument. Black people as a community need to figure out WHY they feel the need to use this word. If it's degrading, it's degrading, but to try and pretend like we have some secret meaning-which we don't-just internalizes the negative connotations that came along with that word to begin with. when you people use that word you use it in different term wich is a term of hatred you people have been using it to put blacks down. now blacks use it in a more loving term and friendly way among themselves. but you people use that word with a lot of hatred even when you sound friendly with it, no body would believe you because they know you're not using it in a friendly way deep down inside.

Jazsy 1 year ago
Who do not want that word attached to there feminine sex. Therefore, I don't call my girls that, and I don't want other people calling them that, and when a man calls me that it offends me. Therefore, the only African-Americans who can use this reclaim argument are the ones who are not offended by whites saying it either. Otherwise, there is no reclaiming going on. Either you find the word offensive or you don't. And as far as I'm concerned, if I was a white person, I would have to laugh (con.)
Jazsy 1 year ago
Still cause them to be so enraged if a white person says it. Whether a white person says nigger, nigga, negro, or any variation, it still causes black people to become visibly, verbally, and violently upset. So, this is why this whole "reclaiming the word" argument makes NO sense to me. It's like the word "B****". There are some women who call each other b**** and let men call them b**** as well. These women have "reclaimed" the word. However, there are other women, such as myself (con.)
Jazsy 1 year ago

KageNoYoru3927 1 year ago
some would say around 90% are naturaly evil, I would say that's abit much, I think around 60% are naturaly that way due to being educated and brought up to believe there's always something to conquer or oppress untill it becomes a part of their subconcious.

Goddamn.
DrDewofCovtown 1 year ago

Why can't other white people understand that?
rmc21586 1 year ago 51
@rmc21586 because white people aren't in their world! we are ignorant and stupid white people who don't understand the brilliant black mind!!!!!
No but really, I don't know. I get sick of black people having a chip on their shoulder though.
DrDewofCovtown 1 year ago
@rmc21586 Because it's about control, no offense but there are still alot of white people that can't get over not being allowed to oppress like they used to, so they find other ways, but it always comes back to, 'why can't we call them this?' or 'why can't we do this to them?' or 'they just have a chip on their shoulder'.
A chip of destructive history with many races attached to it.
deep down alot of them want it back, which makes African Americans think that most whites are naturaly evil.

Exactly. I think Hasselbeck is 100% correct. This should never be used and it shows how shallow-minded people of color/non-whites are. Honeslty, it IS NOT THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN--IT IS THE SHIT ATTITUDE OF MINORITES IN THIS COUNTRY THAT LEADS PEOPLE TO DISLIKE THEM.
silverbogie 1 year ago

@TwitterBug26 yes, but that is history. Get over it.

(Skandinavian history is diferent)

as a mexican, I understand where whoopi is coming from, to an extent because when my family says the word "wet back" it has a different meaning than when a person of another race says it.

I'm just curious, do you feel is it ok to use the phrase, "my nigga" to a black person, who is a friend?
rbecks1988 1 year ago
It wasn't so long ago that the term 'woman' was rude. Now woman is accepted as a normal word. We can use it as a term of endearment. This is what is happening with the words nigger, bitch and other swear words. They are slowly becoming regularly used words so eventually they become less and less offensive. Its what naturally happens with our evolving language but people are going to continue to debate it, in the end 50 years from now these words may just be a normal way of refering to people.
79siggy 1 year ago
First off what I see here is a total misunderstanding. There is a difference between (excuse me for the use of the first word) "nigger" and "nigga". There is also a difference in how you use them. You walk up to a black person and say "Hey NIGGER" you are in the wrong. However, walking up to a friend or someone you know and saying "Wassup my nigga" should not be that big of a deal. There really is a difference in the context and in the actual word itselt.
