I have been told that with goldfish you should always get a filtration system that is double the tank size you have..in other words for a 10 gallon tank get a system that is made for a 20 gallon tank, that helps a lot to keep the tank cleaner. Goldfish can be a bit more "messy" than other fish but to me their beauty is worth it.
World's oldest goldfish lived to be 45 years old in a ten gallon tank. People who say you need "at least" 20 gallons for a single fish are just speaking out their wazoo.
My advice to give your goldfish a chance to thrive would be to Google "GAB Goldfish Care Sheet"
It will give you all the info you need about looking after your fish. I understand a lot of retailers don't give you the info you need to help you look after your pet but there are experienced people online who can advise you about things like tank size, water quality & general care.
If you have any questions feel free to Inbox me and Id be happy to help and have a look at the videos of my fish. :)
If you are gooing to have gravel it should be smaller, so the fish can cycle it through their gills. Caverns and crevices collect food the fist cant get to. Bacteria could set in and harm your tank. The solution would be to put in some smaller fish to clean up after the goldfish.
Its all about the water quality. Goldfish are big eaters and make a big mess in the tank. If the balance can be maintained then the fish can be left in there indefinitely. Just look at the tanks in fish stores. They have powerful filters that cycle hundreds of gallons an hour. They won't grow very large, however.
@broomey44 He can keep them there for a while. 50 gallons would be assuming the gold fish are in full size which they aren't. It would take them a while for the goldfish to grow and as long as keeps ammonia, and nitrite to 0 and updates as they grow, he doesn't have to start with full size. I know it's normally recommended to have a tank holds full size. However with fish that grow slow and large this is just not reasonable. Would you have 6 one inch clown loaches in a 100 gallon tank?
@zune0101 well said. some of these goldfish forum enthusiasts are getting ridiculous. 3 years ago they said (and generally accepted) that 1 fish required 10 gallons of water. now they say one fish needs 20 gallons and they have shown no scientific basis for these statements whatsoever. it's crazy. if they want to advocate for fish health they need to clarify the aspect of filtration.
@zune0101 What you said sounds good, except for one thing... Goldfish do not grow slowly. The only reason they would grow slowly would be if they were kept in a small tank where their growth inhibiting hormone builds up quickly.
For example, I have some that I bought 6 months ago that were 3/4 of and inch and 1 inch long. Today they're both nearly 4 inches long. They were kept in a 55g aquarium with 2 other fish.
@merbet79 I beg your pardon but what your are saying is simply just not true. Goldfish are a type carp. Carp. Prussian carp to be precise. Carps tend to be the type of fish that grow slow and live long. From what you are saying the carp quadruple in size in a matter of 6 months. Ok but you should understand that ratio will slow down very fast. Other wise it will be 16 in long in one year and 64 in two. That's just not reasonable. I don't see why he can just update tank as the fish grows.
@drecklia ok now that's just straw-men argument, i never said that; i said it is wiser to update as fish get bigger. why? goldfish live long(over 20 years) but grow slow. If i were to put 4 one inch goldfish in an 80 gallon tank(which is what you probably end up with) it would look bad, not only that maintaining bacteria alive, after a fish less cycle with such a small bio load is just impossible. And to be honest who doesn't update their tank size anyways.
@aberjed that's just a year, goldfish can grow quite large and can live up to over 30,sometimes, even 40 years. Goldfish won't grow as rapidly as they start aging
@broomey44 wrong...that size tank is what is recommended for 4 ADULT goldfish. likewise, the 20 gallon per goldfish requirement is a recently new development brought about on forums and discussions sponsored by (wait for it) AQUARIUM SUPPLIERS! show me a scientific study that says a goldfish needs a 20 gallon tank and i'll read it. don't hate on someone that set up a nice tank for 4 juvenile fish. its better than a bowl.
thats not true my biology teacher has 9 4 inch goldfish in a 10 gallon and there real heathy he has had them for 2 years they grow on the size of there enclosure
@MegaPlanelover goldfish are freshwater fish and do not need a heater - they are actually better off without it, because they were originally raised in outdoor ponds. Goldfish are fine anywhere from 40 to 80 degrees farenhieght. mollies and guppies are freshwater AND tropical. Freshwater refers to the fact that there is a low level of salinity in the water, unlike marine systems, and tropical refers to the fact that a higher temperature (usually 78-82) is present
Did you ever think that your fish didn't grow because you restricted the size of the tank aka being inhumane? People don't make up information that makes sense like don't stick a goldfish in a small tank because 1) they get 8+ inches and 2) they are dirty. I have multiple large tanks with fish that are "3 inches max" that are much bigger because I gave them a lot of room. The only small tank I have is a 10 gallon all live plants with some community fish that stay under 2 inches.
Goldfish grow in proportion to however big their tank is. dont listen to anyone else who says otherwise because i had a goldfish for yearsss and he didnt get any bigger than like 3 or 4 inches in a ten gallon. he was that big for most of the time i had him. plus i also know this because that is what i have been told from the most people. nice tank btw and good luck with all your fish! :D
how long have you had them for? i have a 8 gallon tank with 2 red cap orandas and i dont know if they will be okay. do they live for long time? how big are the red caps?
Nice tank. I have a 10 gallon fish tank with goldfish too, it has one oranda and one sarasa comet and one african clawed frog.

-Common Goldfish = 20 Gal per fish.
-Fancy Goldfish = 20Gal pf & 10 Gal per extra fish.
-Each tank should have a filter system to cope with high Goldfish waste.
-Fancys and Commons (Single tails) CANNOT be kept together.
-Tank water should be conditioned with a De-chlorinator product.
-New tank can take weeks to set up before fish can be added due to “The Nitrogen Cycle” look it up.
-Weekly water test with a liquid test kit will show toxins in your water and alert you if a water change needed.
