i always thought social media was specifically facebook, myspace and twitter type sites. it seems that the definition has broadened a little, but initially that was it. These day's any site where people have profiles and are able to communicate with other users, falls under the Social Media umbrella. Web 2.0 I thought was used to describe sites with new age design and technology, and not so much just describing the internet as a whole.
Makes sense, but there's nothing wrong in using the descriptor. The current state of the internet is such that people actually use it to socialize, more than just looking for information, as was in the case at the beginning. So in that sense, I disagree with you. Still it's a good argument you've put forward. Cheers!
Small businesses and many entrepreneurs already understand this. Social is a way of being for them, and how it's always been. Of course they can afford to have a personality rather than a brand, making it much easier for them to use the tools that simply amplify how they already act.
that was as always useful, however id love for you to put out a vlog in regards to people assuming that millenials know how to manage Social Media Platforms for the benefit of a Business/Brand. I am so tired of people just ruining their brands name and equity by hiring some young buck to run some social platforms. This is not a game as you know G, if these young thunda kats arent bring in dollars then they do not make sense!
Gary, I love your videos, I have both of your books, I preach what you teach. So hats off to you! No debate. However, I have to disagree with this video. Of course we had to give this evolution of the internet a name, and I think social media is fitting - not just the internet, and web 2.0 is a bit geeky (this coming from someone who studied Software Engineering). When I visit a retail or newspaper website, I do not feel like I'm interacting with a group of people; nope just me and that site.
You're a genius and the inspiration for helpnow. Thanks so much. What a bomb dropped, since I have been talking about "social media" for so long but was oblivious to the terminology.
Interesting. So if social media is just a label to describe the state, is it not possible that the internet is fragmented and faceted? Some (not all) of the internet is still it geocities format, which I would barely consider 1.0!
I think of social media as more of a style myself... but a label/descriptor is also good. Thanks, as always, for giving me something to think about...
There is no such thing as "social media" because "social" is a term that should apply to people. Until we have artificial intelligence (and the ability to generate emotional intelligence) in our actual digital technologies, we are trying to ascribe human behavior to technology platforms that have yet to achieve that.
I write for ReelSEO.com, and have done a whole series on "social video." (Our #1 Google term) But there is no such thing as "social video," either; they're are only social people!
I've always hated the term social media but 2 years ago I gave up fighting it because like you said, it's just a term. Like "the cloud" -- the cloud is not new it's been around for 20 years. it's the internet. But we needed a name for it.
But I can't agree with making "social media" = "internet" because the "social media" term implies some sort of interaction right? -- Looking up stocks for example in the internet doesn't really have much "social" to it.
Totally agree, Social Media is not a good name, I prefer Social World, because it is a world of its own. That bubble hockey game better be USA vs USSR. Happy Holidays, Gary Vee.

Why did you think this so important to tell us...they can call it whatever they want but it doesn't change how people use it - or does it?

Yes theres is something called Social Media, but you are wrong to attach it only to the web:
Social Media is a concept that goes beyond the net: the axis of power shifted, now lies on people, not anymore on the companies.
Is the way people can rise their voices and be heard by millions. And also you can see the echos in the real world, interacting with the web.
Is the construction of communities toward companies, toward sites. Which is very different to talk about web 2.0 or just youtube.

Thanks Gary, that actually makes a lot of sense since most sites are interactive and allow us to comment and share with each other.
