Another way that they can scratch each others backs at the same time is by putting their arms around each other (like they're hugging each other) and then they can both scratch each others backs at the same time.
Re: the "Britishness" of the gorillas, I'll take a guess from memory because (gasp!) I was alive at the time. If this is from the early days of Sesame Street (circa 1969-1970) it was also the early days of PBS. And at that time, one of the driving forces in PBS was British programming (there was little else), so there may have been a subconscious seepage into the American minds creating the Sesame Street spots. Likewise the later "Monsterpiece Theater" with Cookie Monster as Alistair.

Thought one of the gorillas had a southern accent, the first one that spoke. While the second one, did have a Birtish accent.

It could also be that the apes in "Planet of the Apes" also had English accents (Roddy McDowall and Maurice Evans, for instance)
