absolutely loved this! I am completely ignorant abt carnatic music but i loved this piece. it makes me want to hear more. Could anyone suggest me further pieces for a beginner to enjoy.tanx...
@akku220 again, see urban dictionary. also, unless your're a dolt, you can figure out from the context that it was meant to be positive. no one says "hmm, this was a shitty piece of work, but the author is a queen!" --- understood, young akkk's?
@srp112 lol brother, sick doesn't mean negative in Western terms. It means that she (Ms.) has some really awesome stuff. Even words like 'wicked', 'crazy' can mean a really positive thing.
Thank you very much for the beautiful composition of Satguru Sri Thyagaraja Swamigal Kriti "Raghuvamsa Sudha" sung by the Carnatic Musical Vocal Legendary exponent, vidhushi Dr.sow.M.S.Subbulakshmi ji with her beautiful style. Sri Ram, Jaya Ram, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Ram.
I think it is V.V. Subramaniam on the violin and T.K. Murthy on the mridangam. Thyagaraja and Dikshitar did compose a few keerthanams in very simple western tunes like Vara Lila gana lola and Sakthi sahita Ganapathim.
This is a composition of Patnam Subramania Iyer in the ragam Kathanakuthoohalam.
His guru Manambuchavadi Venkatasubbiyer is a direct disciple of Sri Thyagaraja. Venkatasubbiyer created a new ragam "Kuthoohalam" and wrote a composition in it. Patnam Subramania Iyer changed that ragam slightly and created "Kathana kuthoohalam" and wrote this song in that raga.
Don't write nonsense about Thyagaraja listening to British marching bands and creating this ragam/composition.
She is the queen of Alapana,these kritis are very easy for MS.She makes them so easy for us.What a singer?To listen to her is a divine blessing itself.
The raga is actually KATHANA KUTHOOHALAM, as some have correctly written.
In Sanskrit,
KATHANAM = Narration
KUTHOOHALAM = Bliss
It means, Bliss of Narration (or Rendition)
How sad the meaning changes when second letter in vernacular becomes soft! KADANAM = Sorrow. In Tamil, the Sanskrit equivalent of ATHIKHARAM does not exist which creates the problem. It cannot be Bliss of Sorrow!
What I heard about this a long time ago is this: It is raga Kadana kutoohalam -- Kadana means 'battle' in Telugu, Kutoohalam is being deeply interested (curious) or being excited about something. It was said that Thyagaraja heard marching bands of the Europeans (I don't know whether it was the English, French or Dutch) and he wanted to compose a kriti with a raga that shows that "utsah' or excitement (means the same in Telugu and Sanskrit).
@400064raj it is not kathanam it is kadhanam in proper telugu.prakruthi is kadha vikruthi is katha.
So you are saying it in the opposite way.
and its dha as in "GIRIDHARA GOPAL" not da as in "dasanamadikko enna"
Yes spellings make a lot of difference and they need to be followed very strictly otherwise the entire meaning of a song will change like koti(crore) is different from Kothi(Monkey).
not the modern day trash. or that horrible, inhumane western classical.
THIS is the music which emerges from the heart, not the mind. This music is the one that is pure. This music is the most ancient. This music is the one that truly touches one deeper than the heart itself!
@shashasheshay : In Sankarabharanam (the greatest ever Telugu movie), the main character has a dialog where he says "Music is divine, whether it is Indian or Western. Who are we to decide what type of music is great or bad?".
Horrible, inhumane western classical? Maybe you should try to listen to some compositions of Mozart or Bach. Try Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata for starters. Or watch the YouTube video titled 'Salieri describing the music of Mozart'.
@SuperOutsider i did. i am taking a course for western music (required).
i really don't like it. i mean, you can't get the same hearty feel that is there in carnatic music. i find western music to be VERY cold, and without emotion.
@shashasheshay : I think it's an issue of cultural context more than anything. Our music is steeped in divinity and we know very little about the setting of the western classical pieces. Am sure that as you know and discover more, your opinion will change. Good luck with your musical journey!
@SuperOutsider I do agree. This probably due to the fact that I was raised in a family of Brahmins, and the only thing stressed here was Indian culture. As you probably do know, I am trying to find as much beauty as possible int he context of western pieces. I think that after maybe a few more months, I'll be able to respect it somewhat more. And thanks for your well wishes!
@SuperOutsider Also, I think that the fact that Indian culture and music is really undertaught is the true cause of my depreciation of western music. This does infuriate me, as most of all history and all music lessons are focused on Europe/the West.
@shashasheshay : Absolutely. I really wish that Carnatic music is more accessible through light-hearted books and other avenues. And it is too elitist with caste sadly playing a major role - music has to be open to all.
ya being forced to do something is a real bugger... might make you develop such negative opinions.... well you are already taking a course, so maybe i do not need to tell you this, but being an avid listener of both carnatic and western classical traditions, i feel the need to ask you to listen to a few more pieces:
Bach's Cello Suite 1 - Prelude
Bach's Violin Duet
Beethoven's 6th Symphony, esp 1st and 2nd movements,
This Song is not a composition of Sri Tyagaraja. It is a composition of Sri Patnam Subramanya Iyer who in fact created the ragam Kadhana kuthuhalam and then composed this kriti. One way of noticing this is that the mudra of Sri Patam Subramanya Iyer is "Venkatesha" and in many of songs, he composes imaginative and beautiful chitta swarams.
Wow! What an invigorating song by MS Amma. Her voice becomes an instrument- like the violin- after a point. The swaram is the highlight. Love it in the ''third kalam''. Thanks for posting this song.
