I can't remember the date but it was probably later 67 or early 68 I saw them perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in CA. It was at a dance called Dewalt's on Saturday nights and he brought in a lot of upcoming talent before they made it big. Steppen Wolf played and the Animals. I was blown away by IB's psychedelic style. I've always considered them and Jefferson Airplane the 2 true psychedelic bands. They came with "light show" projecting paint smeared between clear glass onto the walls.
Danny Weis has a Myspace page where you can contact him for more information. He was one of the founding members of Iron Buterfly, so I am sure he would have all the info you need, and if not I can contact him through email of any questions you might have.
@hesarufaerie Great! The more info I get about these Iron Butterfly 45s the better. There's is just too little official information about them that it gets very confusing. So if you or anyone who knows former/current members of Iron Butterfly who can confirm the lineups on these 45s I would be very appreciative.
I may be young, but I've done so much reasearch into Iron Butterfly, that I know for a fact that its very fuzzy as to when Erik Braunn and Lee Dorman joined. Some say they joined right before the recording of "Vida"...but I don't buy that. I believe that they joined between late-Nov. and early Dec. of 1967 perhaps even earlier. But the info on IB between October 1967-Late January 1968 is so sparse that it makes it near impossible to be 100% sure of the lineup.
@PsychedelicTeen I saw them in January '67 and they had a different lead guitar player than the In A Godda guitarist. The guy I saw looked like Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. The IB had a "Mick Jagger" lead singer when I saw them so they were a 5 man group. He was a great dancer and an tamborine player and sang unisons with the organ player. God they had a great sound captured best in In A Godda Da Vida. THAT is what they sounded like. Very loud yet very clear like their namesake.
So here's what we know. The Heavy album was recorded in October of 1967. But it wasn't released until Jan. 22, 1968, by which point the Heavy lineup had dissolved and Erik and Lee were already in IB. In my conversation with Doug, he told me that Erik and Lee joined IB near the end of 1967. So, if there's a chance that this was recorded after the Heavy album, then there is still a chance that this song has Erik and Lee on it. But we can't be sure until Lee, Ron and Doug confirm the lineup.
@BestMusicExpert, thanks for the input and this is why the lineup on this song gets confusing. Because I've also had the pleasure of talking with Doug Ingle and he told me that this song has Erik and Lee, not Danny and Jerry.
Some of the Iron Butterfly Theme guitar theatrics are in this. The ones that sound like a prehistoric creature ... what I used to call an "Iron Butterfly", when I was 16 in 1967 ... I saw them at the teen club the "Blue Law", in what is now Carson, CA in the LA area ...twice in 1967 ... They blew my mind ..... What great memories ... I bought their Heavy album right away ..... Groovy !
When they recorded HEAVY in 1967,it was Danny Weis on guitars ; Erik Brann(wich died of heart attack in 2003,RIP) replaced him for IN A GADDA DA VIDA,and the following,BALL.
Hey vividwatch47, it turns out that this is Erik Braunn (as well as Lee Dorman) Apparently the story, as told to me by Doug Ingle, was that after Danny Weis and Jerry Penrod left Doug and Ron recruited Erik and Lee. BUT Darryl DeLoach was still in the group. So while he was deciding what to do, IB recorded this song which is now regarded as the first recording Erik and Lee did with Iron Butterfly. BTW the reason why it sounds like Danny is because Erik actually bought all of his equipment!
Anyone know what amps they were using-67-68- -I think it was Vox --not sure-----Great sounds -great music--I was about 11-12 years old -when they hit the airwaves--Great Psychedelic music-----!!Charlie
Hey JetFighter666, I have heard of Gita. But I've never heard of Time Sequence. Do you know if those songs ever got to the studio? I also have the Ball reissue with those bonus tracks. Great stuff!
I am just completely blown away! MY GOD !! Keep up with the posts! I hung with Eric one night in '74 He told me about some songs and they might even have played some new ones.that night in N.J. do you know "Geeta"[Gita] or Time Sequence? that was two, I forget the others. I know there was two Bonus tracks on the ball disk "I can't help but to deceive you girl" and" too be alone " Keep up the Great Butterfly post's
Im 46 now but back when i was a teen I would have killed to have youtube to access all these rare recordings and videos. Man theres even Captain Beyond vids here!
Hello, I recently found Doug Ingle on youtube. So I asked him the 45s I posted and the answers are surprising. For example, the lineup on this song is actually:
Doug Ingle-Keyboards
Darryl DeLoach-Vocals/Tambourine
ERIK BRAUNN-GUITAR
LEE DORMAN-BASS
Ron Bushy-Drums
So as you can guess, this is one of (if not) the first recording IB made with Erik Braunn and Lee Dorman.
Maybe! I'd say in the next month or two, I'll probably have a couple more. I just uploaded a Blue Cheer song, so look for that and tell me what you think!
I can't reconcile the singer's voice with my concept of Iron Butterfly.

This was recorded PRIOR to the recording of the Heavy album, not after, hence Erik and Lee are NOT on this cut.

Erik Brann didn't join Iron Butterfly until "In A Gadda Da Vida", so the guitar work must be by Danny Weis.
