Remember to change the Gradient Mode to "FG to BG (RGB)". and apply the Gradient to the "mask" not to the layer.

I think you're doing something wrong with the mask. Make sure you select the mask.

I think, I'm not sure, the problems are the layers.

At 2:43 you must have 3 layers. 1. -Text Layer on top. 2.-New Layer in the middle. This one MUST BE selected to continue to the next step. And it has to be in the middle. 3.-Background Layer at the bottom. Continue with the rest of the tutorial.

Go to File:: Save or Save as... Name you file. Choose a location, the extension you want to save it. I recommend .XCF. The Gimp Format because it saves layers, masks, paths...

No, I'm not using a Mac. It's a skinning program it's Style XP. You can use Windowblinds too. They're both pretty good.

I have only installed Linux in my PC, though. I'm trying to learn it.
