Here is my reasoning on the subject:

The Mayans had no concept of infinity. They believed that the world was part of an eternal cycle, one which would restart every 26,000 years (I think). Their calender (specifically the 'long count calender) recounts one of these cycles, and it ends in december 2012. Nothing bad will actually happen, just the Mayans thought the world would be reborn. :)
