  • Green is a Police colour in Germany.

  • Why the sizes? I love shallow toms. I have used power toms for so long I now hate them because I can't place the toms low enough to play comfortably!!!

  • The Tama snare was designed after a Pearl Jupiter 5" x 14" brass snare, which was the snare he used on all those Police records.

  • Although he plays Tama - you can hear ludwig supraphonic snare on a lot of Police records (like "Oh My God") :-)

  • @McSnurf I can guarantee that the snare on "Oh My God" was not a Ludwig Supraphonic!

  • Played by gorillas like me. Haha what a guy!

  • I like how he doesn't change his cymbals/heads after every gig. That isn't sarcasm btw haha. Like every drummer just wastes heads after a gig and uses new ones for the next, same with cymbals.

  • hes kind of a thug

  • I did the quarter note to the left and now I have a record label:)

  • The Stewart Copeland snare is a monster. That thing will SLICE BUTTER.

  • i took the beat to the left!

  • So true... even with immense skills he had to have luck and timing. We all got really lucky too because we go to hear decades of his great drumming!

  • hes awesome on the guitar aswell.

  • 0:38 WTF? How good can his signature snare be if he's using triggers for the live show?

  • @gd44 its the the reverb/delay and other modulation effects.

  • @cdcgb1 That doesn't sound right. Effects work on incoming sound. Triggers send an electronic pulse to a sound module. A trigger hooked directly to an effects box would render no sound.

  • Tama is still making great drums, but they're finishes have become kinda crappy as of late.

  • Is there already one drummer who made the beat to the left unavailable?

  • @gijsphilip James Brown built his whole career off the "beat to the left".

  • Move your beats to the left, young drummers.

  • Don't you love interviews with rich kids? By the way, he was not starving.

  • its a 15,000$ kit

  • As I recall, Stewart is actually a lefty, and I wonder to what degree that affects his drumming. Same for being left or right footed. I imagine his high hat work was influenced by that.

  • @Tubes12AX7k really ! i never knew that, i'm quite similar myself, obviously not as good, but it doesn't really seem to affect me

  • My favorite drummer of all time!

  • It's a copy of the 1983 kit, but the tom tom heads are a different style. Rather than coated ambassadors, these are thicker, uncoated heads.

  • I'm not normally an envious person but, damn to play like that.

  • wat song is playing at 1:37 ?

  • @LtDeath10 Regatta de Blanc, veery cool song, from the self titled album

  • I'ma move every beat 1.5 quarter notes to the right. Beat that!

  • i've started moving every beat 1/4 note to the left .... DIBS!

  • I think I should listen to him.

  • you are the reason i played the drums , stewart is god .

funny but i play a tama , coincidence , no

  • Has anyone tried to actually move the beat to the left.

  • @TheQuigonjohn pretty hard to do it and still sound good and in the timing. Move the beat to the left isn't that easy ^^

  • I would loooooooove to have that very kit. If Not I'll take that Police logo kick head for my Tama's!!!

  • When did Jerry Springer join the Police?

  • A big hero of mine.

  • i play TAMA ROCKSTARS,, but stewart,,if you ever read this,, ill give anything to have the EXACT tama imperialstar snare drum you used in the studio when you recorded 'GHOST IN THE MACHINE" !! it's simply the best sounding snare drum i've ever heard in my life!!! anybody who don't believe me,,listen to "one world" on ghost in the machine. that popcorn crack of his snare will definitely get a drummer's attension,,,FAST!!!!

  • he's quite underrated amongst the biggest drummers...

  • Good I love the Police

  • " Everyone Stares "- underrated concept and content...amazing! Gizmo great also.

  • Why the french would you trigger your own signature snare, that's artarted! He's still epic though

  • @TylerSabian

many large acts have triggers on the drums as a back up if a mic cuts out or moves, mainly on kick and snare.

  • Would give my balls to play on that kit for 10 minutes.

  • @toddy01bass wtf are you crazy

  • @SilentBombr maybe i am

  • @toddy01bass You just said you would trade your balls for some steel snare drum (exactly the same as a Sensitone)

    crazy n00b

  • @SilentBombr to play on copelands kit, is actually what i said. and learn the difference between an 0 and an o. 'noob'.

  • @toddy01bass Alright man I was only joking, keep your testicles hahaha

  • he's a cocky bastard, but god damn what a legend. when youre a legend like copeland, you are allowed to be cocky. he's a master.

  • Tama make the most amazing drums and Paiste make amazing cymbals........

  • @eatrocksah WHAT THE FUCK?! can YOU drum as good as him? dont think so.

  • I love his blue ride symbol:) also... could someone explain to me how you "move your quarter note to the left"? And, this man is a god when it comes to drums! :D

  • @aliont

OK, I'll bite: he suggests instead of playing the first beat of your standard rhythm on count 1 of the bar, start your first (accented) note on count 4 of the previous bar. Like he - more or less - shifted the main accent not on 1 but on count 2 (on 3, actually). To the right, as it were.

Well, that's what *he* implies was the root of his success, anyway.

    Jokingly, of course.

  • anyone knows what's the song at the beginning ??

  • @HumanOnFire Do Do Do, Da Da Da

  • I <3 The Police and Steward Copeland... Aber keiner will wissen was das drumkit kostet ;-)

  • today is a GREAT day for me :)....just picked up a tama starclassic bubinga/birch kit with the copeland snare!!!!....ive never touched a kit that sounds even half as good as this kit...and this masters signature snare is fuckin ridiculous

  • @toolkills congrats mate, that's a fine piece of art in form of drumkit XD

  • @toolkills SWEEEEEEEEET!!!! CONGRATS!!!

  • @toolkills

    good for you

im getting some sleishmans in tobacco fade soon!!

if you just got a starclassic, then why are you on youtube????

    im just saying

  • @toolkills so how's the kit now that u had it for seven months...I'm thinkin about a bubinga/birch kit too. what other drums have u owned before your tama kit? and does it compare at all? thx.

  • @drummie7 amazing dude...check out my channel if you wanna hear how it sounds.....check my uploads titled.."low down groovin"...and " jam a jelly jam"....lol retarded titles but def a solid example at how these drums sound...shitty single mic recording and all...check it out ..pz

  • Of course! Green was the colour of the police in germany! ;D

  • I wish I could do anything as well as Stew plays the drums...

  • im learning one of his rides

  • shut up and play the fucking drums u look like my mom

  • @ShroomSamich do you even know who the fuck you're talking about ,you ignorant bastard !!?? bow to this drummer you stupid moron ! your ignorance is not surprising, ..if you were a real drummer you'd know who he is and what he's done .. so stop being an impatient asshole and watch a true master at work and listen to what he has to say....let me guess, you love clowns like joey jordison and travis barker , right ?..lmfao ! if not , it doesn't matter, i don't give a fuck who you like anyway..

  • @ShroomSamich do yourself a favor and do your homework on drummers who've changed the face of drumming ,instead of making snide comments about world reknown drummers..

  • Awesome looking drums and cymbals!

Horrible tuning though... I mean the 10 and 12" toms are way to far apart as far as pitch goes, and the floor toms are almost the same :P

  • love love love stewart..but not fond of tama..i'm a ludwig and gretsch man..

  • @blica1 those are great but sonor all the way

  • @ryanandbranslurppiss i actually have a great working gig, kick ass sonor jungle kit tha i put together...it consists of an18x17.5 (sonor dimensions) bass drum in amber fade and a great little full maple auxiliary 5x12 black sparkle snare drum and it kicks ass ! top it off with my paiste's and the kit is a little monster !

  • Show off!

  • Those octabans would be the death of me. I would never have the accuracy to hit them right with any kind of speed. It was just be rim shots and broken stick for me...lol!

  • Normally I like drummers like Bonzo, but when I heard Copeland... He deserves to be called Rhythmatist. He's like a clock.

  • he might have become an awesome drum solo artist

  • The last thing he says here is about being "lucky". Luck played no part in it. Spirit, timing, groove, heart... that's it. Thanks.

  • I always dug the way he tuned so tight, which in turn gave him a very syncopated and precise sound that complemented his incredible technique! His drumming was SO much a part of the Police that made them so unique.

  • haha uniqueitude

  • when he talking about moving rhythms to the right and left he's talking about murder by numbers

  • no it's progressive rock( anything that porgressive rock meands), who the fuck say that?

  • en chile la policia tiene su uniforme de color verde (green) stewart jajajajaja

  • i think thats why its funny :L

  • wait...one beat to the right or left...isnt it the same either way??

  • @zapskimmer0123 He meant overlaid with the other members of the band

  • Uniquitude!

    5:22

    Love it!

  • His drum tech reminds me of Bruce Willis

  • @ 1:36 What police song is that Riff from?!! I must learn it!!!

  • Regatta De Blanc.... second track of the album of the same name.... Love it!

  • I know little about playing the drums but I love music. Since Zenyatta Mendatta (when I was 10) I've thought Stew was the best. No technical reasons to back up my opinion... the guy just has a unique style and sound and his pure physical skill is sick.

  • stewart copeland... master of the hats.

  • @keith07712

And the snare, and the rotos...

  • @beowulven lol, that is true! how could I have forgotten?

  • 4:15 he's obviously never heard of david garibaldi

  • haha. Stewart is the absoulute opposite of cocky and arrogant. know your history.

  • ...And Portnoy ain't?

  • @fireram207 what does this have to do with portnoy? totally different style and type of music. apples and oranges. portnoy is a fantastic drummer but we're not talking about him.

  • No he is not! He's just a hard-headed intellectual with amazing drumming skills!

  • i've noticed MOONGEL on tom toms.. very usefull !!

  • Stewart Copeland= God

  • Why does he have a signature snare when he's got a trigger on it!?

  • For the electronic drum sounds I guess. There are a few numbers I believe.

Later on in the video you can see it's mic'd up too (with the usual SM75).

Maybe there's a blend between triggered and mic'd up snare sounds, or maybe not.

  • @Animatronica Ah fair enough. Actually yeah that's a fair point, it'd be good to have your own sound but be able to change it to a triggered sound whenever.

  • he puts echo on some stuff. his snare is just that good. he has like a pickup or something on it i think idk. i wish i could get that snare sound

  • It's a JOKE....Rock star HUMOUR...

  • i didnt understand when he said 1 1/4 note to the right......can somebody help?

  • Basically what he means is he oftentimes played his grooves an eighth or quarter note "late" (to the right, later in the bar on a staff), making the "downbeat" on 2 instead of 1. It makes for something different. He is credited with many such rhythmic oddities, which somewhat came to characterize the sound of The Police. There was a great write up on him in DRUM! magazine with examples of this kind of playing, around mid 2008

  • cocky motha fucka hahaha :D

  • I wish I had the money to just pick what color drum set I wanted to tour with xP

  • Stewart Copeland is notorious for being "ahead of the beat" which really drives the music and as he says is "right of the beat." A good example of the opposite is questlove's drumming style on D'angelo's Voodoo album. He plays behind the beat and sits back quite a bit. And Stewart is right cause now Questlove is famous too.

  • what does he mean about moving a beat to the left or to the right?

  • @PanekPL There is a police song, I don't remember the name, where the ENTIRE groove is moved one quarter note to the right, and so everything sounds really funky because the backbeat and downbeats are in the wrong place, same with the cymbal accents and such, every single bit of the song sounds strange and builds this weird backwards suspense.

  • @Bananapuddinpie

Demolition Man and Spirits in the Material World both share this trait.

  • @Bananapuddinpie its Roxanne

stewart does that because of his turkish legacy

  • LOL gorilla

  • his drum heads and cymbals are ABUSED!

  • amazing drummer and seems like such a nice guy too

  • DRUM WORLD MAG I love it....1 1/4 note to the right, already taken,1 1/4 note to the left not taken,I love this guy.One of my favorite drummers.Stewart was great on SPECTIAL with Elvis Costello...World class drummer.Like he says he plays like a Gorilla,...Great humour...

  • Stewart Copeland you didn't get lucky, you worked your ass off.

  • @hdtvcamera1 Amen, dude! A-freakin'-men!

  • GORILLAS UNITE!

  • Alot of people use that text speech and it drives me insane

  • Very interesting, whats more interesting he has Shure SM57 mic for snare lol! Also is that pearl hardware he has?

  • 3:14

  • Ahh, a peek behind the curtain. Thanks for posting this, very informative.

  • my bro has that blue cymbal ;-)

  • 1 of my favs

  • man i love this guy hes awesome

  • This ain't an exact copy of his old kit. Some sizes are the same but some aren't. Plus the configuration of how he has it set up now is alil different. So yup this one is way different and way better compared to the one he used in the 80s.

  • I want a drug test on this guy. He's amazing!! Split the beat like that, anyone! This guy is a drum god!

  • It's he has not he have go back to school and learn proper grammar

  • Proper use of language isn't a big thing here at youtube, apparently. It says alot about a person though.

  • he have a DDrum trigger on the snare..

  • My God. Iove you Sewart. I'm sold. What can I say?

  • He forgot to mention that he's lucky his brother was a producer, and he got the Police signed.

  • mrbrewhaha...Are you jealous, bitter, or a combination of the two?

  • Hi am huge fan of the police, but I do not believe POLICE had catched all my attention without Stweart on the drums !!

  • Stewart Copelands a fucking beast. He can play polyrhythms effortlessly.

  • I love Stewart's hi-hat work!!! One of my favorite drummers for sure

  • Great post. Stewart is one of my favourite drummers. I'm now waiting for all of the air head Travis Barker follwers to come and taint this post.

  • I want one! his right!!!

  • If you want a quality PDF music sheet with Stewart Copeland's most popular patterns go to drumwatch.wordpress(dot)com

You'll find more drum music sheets. Daily updated drummers blog.

  • Saw him splintering his sticks with curved air a couple of times, The guitarists werent as good as they should have been but the band was still good and being managed by his brother Miles at BTM. So good Stewart married the lead singer ! Anyway they are touring again in 09 with most of the original line up,

  • IDK what's going on, but if someone is criticizing Stewart you're either trying to mess with people, or just dumb.

He's known as a master of synchopation world wide, bringing reggae drumming into main stream music, and knowing almost every little musical technique.

    He's not a drummer, he's a rhythmatist master.

  • see? i question your age and you got back to the curses, and i will not waste another second of my time with you, just for the record, check what paracoccidio wrote, notice im not the only one who thinks this way. And about you, you just quit this and go try to sleep ok again, couse im not writing to you again, you are too low for me and i do have self respect, besides, im sure you would never talk to me like that if you were right infront of me. So long kid.

  • ...I am for the left:)

  • why on the fucking world does he uses his snare signature if he has the trigger on it.

i hate this kind of shit, it gives you no clue of how it really sounds.

triggers came to ruin the drum technique

  • Comment removed

  • loser? what are you 8? grow up kid, if you are not willing to share toughts about stuff keep away, and stop being so emotional, what is the toube for then?? Believe me, if you know something about music or drumming you wouldnt look up to copeland, thats all.

  • Jajaajajajaja, im sorry if i made you cry, i didnt mean to hurt your feelings so bad. I feel sorry for you and your hero.

  • I wish he did more solo videos

  • I love his style & sound. Even as a kid trying to pretend or "air drum" other drummers was easy but SC's rhythm on the Police records I had was just too hard to try to imitate or copy & play around with. And the fact that he seems a lot more worldly or culturally driven growing up in Arab countries, playing Reggae riffs on Japanese drums is cool.

  • playing Reggae riffs on Japanese drums is cool.--

It was described brilliantly once as "Gratuitous ethnic bullshit"

  • holy shit, its Jerry Springer!!

  • kupa890 :stain the real meaning of music.

    -------------------

Go back to your barry manilow albums then

  • oh you must be one of those crappy musicians am talking about, thats the only reason why you got your feelings hurt. If you like money more than music get a job.

  • finally someone else who realizes this!

  • SC is responsible for my kit's arrangement, splashes, etc. By the way, Thanks Stewart for the lessons! You made it all come together.

  • i also like a nice pak sound to my snare drum.

  • i use them drums same sizes and i never even knew Stewart had a set.

reason i play tama drums they can take a good beating, strong in design, the tone of the drums are nice, i like using a smaller drums because its the tone i like.

don't like a deep sound when it comes to my tom toms.

  • with all the speed drummers out there, this guy gets completely overlooked. This man is a legend, and is in my opinion, highly underrated.

  • move it to the left. got it.

  • omg! he use smaller tom drums like me, plus i got a tama kit its even the same color, i never liked the sound of big drums i like more of a tone to my drum kit , plus a nice pak sound to my snare drums

  • Great drummer, great composer, great guy, and intelligent as well...

  • what are those cymbals with films on them?

  • its his signature ride
