Why the sizes? I love shallow toms. I have used power toms for so long I now hate them because I can't place the toms low enough to play comfortably!!!
I like how he doesn't change his cymbals/heads after every gig. That isn't sarcasm btw haha. Like every drummer just wastes heads after a gig and uses new ones for the next, same with cymbals.
@cdcgb1 That doesn't sound right. Effects work on incoming sound. Triggers send an electronic pulse to a sound module. A trigger hooked directly to an effects box would render no sound.
As I recall, Stewart is actually a lefty, and I wonder to what degree that affects his drumming. Same for being left or right footed. I imagine his high hat work was influenced by that.
i play TAMA ROCKSTARS,, but stewart,,if you ever read this,, ill give anything to have the EXACT tama imperialstar snare drum you used in the studio when you recorded 'GHOST IN THE MACHINE" !! it's simply the best sounding snare drum i've ever heard in my life!!! anybody who don't believe me,,listen to "one world" on ghost in the machine. that popcorn crack of his snare will definitely get a drummer's attension,,,FAST!!!!
I love his blue ride symbol:) also... could someone explain to me how you "move your quarter note to the left"? And, this man is a god when it comes to drums! :D
OK, I'll bite: he suggests instead of playing the first beat of your standard rhythm on count 1 of the bar, start your first (accented) note on count 4 of the previous bar. Like he - more or less - shifted the main accent not on 1 but on count 2 (on 3, actually). To the right, as it were.
Well, that's what *he* implies was the root of his success, anyway.
today is a GREAT day for me :)....just picked up a tama starclassic bubinga/birch kit with the copeland snare!!!!....ive never touched a kit that sounds even half as good as this kit...and this masters signature snare is fuckin ridiculous
@toolkills so how's the kit now that u had it for seven months...I'm thinkin about a bubinga/birch kit too. what other drums have u owned before your tama kit? and does it compare at all? thx.

@ShroomSamich do yourself a favor and do your homework on drummers who've changed the face of drumming ,instead of making snide comments about world reknown drummers..
@ryanandbranslurppiss i actually have a great working gig, kick ass sonor jungle kit tha i put together...it consists of an18x17.5 (sonor dimensions) bass drum in amber fade and a great little full maple auxiliary 5x12 black sparkle snare drum and it kicks ass ! top it off with my paiste's and the kit is a little monster !
Those octabans would be the death of me. I would never have the accuracy to hit them right with any kind of speed. It was just be rim shots and broken stick for me...lol!
I always dug the way he tuned so tight, which in turn gave him a very syncopated and precise sound that complemented his incredible technique! His drumming was SO much a part of the Police that made them so unique.
I know little about playing the drums but I love music. Since Zenyatta Mendatta (when I was 10) I've thought Stew was the best. No technical reasons to back up my opinion... the guy just has a unique style and sound and his pure physical skill is sick.
@fireram207 what does this have to do with portnoy? totally different style and type of music. apples and oranges. portnoy is a fantastic drummer but we're not talking about him.
@Animatronica Ah fair enough. Actually yeah that's a fair point, it'd be good to have your own sound but be able to change it to a triggered sound whenever.
Basically what he means is he oftentimes played his grooves an eighth or quarter note "late" (to the right, later in the bar on a staff), making the "downbeat" on 2 instead of 1. It makes for something different. He is credited with many such rhythmic oddities, which somewhat came to characterize the sound of The Police. There was a great write up on him in DRUM! magazine with examples of this kind of playing, around mid 2008
Stewart Copeland is notorious for being "ahead of the beat" which really drives the music and as he says is "right of the beat." A good example of the opposite is questlove's drumming style on D'angelo's Voodoo album. He plays behind the beat and sits back quite a bit. And Stewart is right cause now Questlove is famous too.
@PanekPL There is a police song, I don't remember the name, where the ENTIRE groove is moved one quarter note to the right, and so everything sounds really funky because the backbeat and downbeats are in the wrong place, same with the cymbal accents and such, every single bit of the song sounds strange and builds this weird backwards suspense.
DRUM WORLD MAG I love it....1 1/4 note to the right, already taken,1 1/4 note to the left not taken,I love this guy.One of my favorite drummers.Stewart was great on SPECTIAL with Elvis Costello...World class drummer.Like he says he plays like a Gorilla,...Great humour...

So is drumming about being rich and famous?? ja, this guy is more pathetic than i tought. Guys like this encourage todays musicians to stain the real meaning of music.
oh you must be one of those crappy musicians am talking about, thats the only reason why you got your feelings hurt. If you like money more than music get a job.
i use them drums same sizes and i never even knew Stewart had a set.
reason i play tama drums they can take a good beating, strong in design, the tone of the drums are nice, i like using a smaller drums because its the tone i like.
don't like a deep sound when it comes to my tom toms.
omg! he use smaller tom drums like me, plus i got a tama kit its even the same color, i never liked the sound of big drums i like more of a tone to my drum kit , plus a nice pak sound to my snare drums

So is drumming about being rich and famous?? ja, this guy is more pathetic than i tought. Guys like this encourage todays musicians to stain the real meaning of music.

SC is responsible for my kit's arrangement, splashes, etc. By the way, Thanks Stewart for the lessons! You made it all come together.

i use them drums same sizes and i never even knew Stewart had a set.
reason i play tama drums they can take a good beating, strong in design, the tone of the drums are nice, i like using a smaller drums because its the tone i like.
don't like a deep sound when it comes to my tom toms.

with all the speed drummers out there, this guy gets completely overlooked. This man is a legend, and is in my opinion, highly underrated.
